The Australian market has become a harsher environment for major retailers in recent years, due to a background of extensive regulatory restrictions and the recent entry of independent and hypermarket operators operating on the back of cheaper Asian imports; by late-2003, Woolworth's, for example, had built up a network of some 290 sites.
