La Linea 1
Dall’inizio del 2006 a Torino è in esercizio la prima metropolitana automatica d’Italia.
La Linea 1 costituisce uno dei punti fondamentali del programma di miglioramento del sistema di trasporto pubblico.
L’attuale percorso collega il comune di Collegno al centro di Torino unendo rapidamente punti nevralgici della città; in circa 11 minuti è possibile percorrere 7,5 km, dalla stazione Fermi (Collegno) alla stazione XVIII Dicembre (Porta Susa).
Nel 2007, sarà inaugurato il tratto tra le stazioni ferroviarie Porta Susa e Porta Nuova per un totale di 9,6 km e 15 stazioni.
Dal 2010 un altro tratto, già in costruzione, collegherà Porta Nuova a Lingotto; verrà così garantito un trasporto efficace e rapido tra il centro, la zona ospedali e l’importante polo fieristico, universitario e commerciale.
Sono in progettazione i prolungamenti, a ovest verso i comuni di Rivoli e Rosta e a sud verso piazza Bengasi.

Il sistema VAL
Il sistema VAL, Veicolo Automatico Leggero, progettato da Siemens, permette una gestione totalmente automatizzata in grado di garantire grande flessibilità di servizio, elevate prestazioni e ridotti costi di gestione.
Sicurezza e confort sono stati i due principali criteri adottati nella scelta della tecnologia della metropolitana di Torino.
Caratteristica principale del VAL è l’automazione integrale: i treni si muovono senza conducente, guidati da sistemi informatici collegati al PCC (Posto di Comando e Controllo) situato nel Comprensorio tecnico di Collegno.
Le ridotte dimensioni dei veicoli (lunghi 52 metri e larghi 2,08) consentono un’elevata frequenza di passaggio, assicurando un carico d’utenza fino a 30.000 persone l’ora.
I treni si muovono su ruote di gomma che rotolano su guide d’acciaio e garantiscono ridotte vibrazioni, elevate velocità e grande flessibilità di esercizio.

Il Comprensorio tecnico
Il punto nevralgico del sistema è il Comprensorio tecnico, sede del PCC (Posto di Comando e Controllo). In una superficie di circa 200.000 mq operano complessivamente 120 persone.
L’area ospita il deposito, dove sostano i 23 treni attualmente in servizio, l’officina per la manutenzione dei treni e gli uffici amministrativi per la gestione e l’organizzazione dell’esercizio della linea. Una pista di prove di 750 m permette di testare i treni.
L’officina è direttamente collegata al PCC tramite il sistema informatico SGM (Sistema Gestione Manutenzione) grazie al quale malfunzionamenti o guasti ai treni e alle vie di corsa vengono immediatamente rilevati tramite sistemi telemetrici.
I treni sono controllati ogni 15.000 km (circa 2 mesi di esercizio), indipendentemente dalle segnalazioni di guasti; la manutenzione “programmata” è gestita in modo da garantire l’esercizio di non meno di 19 treni.
Tre diversi magazzini, collegati al SGM, sono annessi all’officina (stazioni e vie di corsa, treni, oli e grassi). Il sistema gestisce i quantitativi del materiale necessario in base alle riparazioni effettuate, in modo da ottimizzare l’acquisto di nuovi pezzi.

Il Posto di Comando e Controllo
Il sistema VAL è progettato in modo da garantire la massima sicurezza attraverso il Controllo Automatico dei Treni (ATC) progettato specificamente per questo tipo di veicoli.
Il “cervello” del sistema è il PCC (Posto di Comando e Controllo); dalla sala operativa, con telecomandi, telemisure e telecamere, gli operatori sono in grado sia di controllare l’inserimento, il funzionamento e il ritiro dei treni, sia di dialogare con gli utenti in stazione tramite interfono.
In assenza di intervento degli operatori, il sistema funziona in modo completamente automatico. I treni si muovono senza conducente, controllati in ogni movimento da dispositivi di sicurezza e da sofisticati sistemi informatici situati lungo la galleria.
Inoltre dispositivi di rilevamento fumi e di protezione incendi garantiscono un viaggio in sicurezza.
Il sistema di video sorveglianza, composte da 549 telecamere collegate al PCC, tutelano la sicurezza dei passeggeri in ogni momento.

La metro e la città
La metropolitana si integra al sistema di trasporto pubblico di superficie dove in corrispondenza di ogni stazione, o a una distanza a piedi di pochi minuti, si trovano le fermate di 28 linee di superficie.
Con la metropolitana il GTT, Gruppo Torinese Trasposti, amplia così la complessa rete dei trasporti pubblici di Torino: 8 linee tram, 80 linee autobus, 100 km di rete tram, 1.000 km di rete autobus, oltre 5.000 persone che ogni anno permettono i trasferimenti di circa 190 milioni di passeggeri nell’area di Torino e provincia.
Con la realizzazione della metropolitana si riqualificano le aree di superficie: corso Francia, viale alberato e antica via di collegamento con la Francia e le piazze Massaua, Rivoli e Bernini, razionalizzate, sono liberate da parte del traffico veicolare per lasciare più spazio a pedoni e biciclette.

I cantieri
Il tratto in costruzione che collegherà Porta Nuova a Lingotto, si sviluppa in rettilineo sotto via Nizza. Sono previste 6 stazioni distribuite a circa 650 metri l’una dall’altra: Marconi, Nizza, Dante, Carducci-Molinette, Spezia e Lingotto.
I lavori sono iniziati nella primavera del 2006 e dureranno complessivamente 4 anni.
Come per il tratto Fermi – Porta Nuova, i lavori sono organizzati per contenere al massimo l’impatto dei cantieri sulla vita cittadina.
Per la costruzione delle stazioni e del tratto di galleria da Porta Nuova a Marconi, verrà utilizzata la tecnica di scavo con ruspe “cut and cover” (taglia e copri), mentre per la costruzione del tratto di galleria da Marconi a Lingotto, verrà utilizzata la “talpa” (TBM – Tunnel Boring Machine); questo consente di lavorare in massima parte sotto la sede stradale, limitando le polveri e l’impatto sulla viabilità.

La comunicazione
Dal 2000 le attività di costruzione e di messa in esercizio della metropolitana sono accompagnate da un piano di comunicazione impostato su tre linee guida:
• valorizzare il progetto di una metropolitana leggera e dinamica;
• gestire il disagio dei cantieri e “ascoltare” il territorio per trovare soluzioni condivise nella gestione dell’impatto dei lavori;
• accompagnare la messa in esercizio incentivando l’uso del nuovo mezzo di trasporto pubblico.

The line 1
Since the beginning of 2006 the first Italian automated underground metro service has come into operation.
The Line 1 represents one of the fundamental steps of the planned improvement program envisaged for the city’s public transportation system.
The current route connects the Council of Collegno to the centre of Turin, linking crucial areas of the city; in around 11 minutes one can cover the 7.5 km from the Fermi Station of Collegno to the XVIII Dicembre Station close to Porta Susa.
In 2007, the stretch joining the rail stations of Porta Susa and Porta Nuova will be opened, expanding the overall length of the metro to 9.6 km and 15 stations.
From 2010 another stretch currently under construction will also be opened that will link Porta Nuova to the Lingotto; this will provide an effective and quick means of transport between the centre, the hospital area and the important trade fair, university and commercial centre.
Extensions are also envisaged to the west in the directions of the Councils of Rivoli and Rosta and to the south towards piazza Bengasi.

The VAL system
The VAL - Automated Light Vehicle - system, , designed by Siemens, enables the service to be run automatically, thus maximizing the flexibility of the service itself while maintaining high levels of performance and curtailing management costs.
Safety and comfort have been the two main criteria that have determined the choice of the technology to be used for the Turin metro.
A primary feature of the VAL is the total automation: the trains are driverless, and are remotely controlled by computer guidance systems located in the PCC (Command and Control post) located in the Technical Centre set up in Collegno.
The reduced size of the vehicles (52 metres long by 2.08 wide) are designed to allow a very high service frequency, which means that the system can carry up to 30,000 people an hour.
The trains travel on rubber wheels that roll along steel guideways and minimize the level of vibration while allowing high speeds and considerable service flexibility.

The stations
The designing of the 21 stations of the Collegno – Lingotto stretch has been inspired by principles set out in the Architectural Guidelines drawn up by the Bernard Kohn & Associés studio.

The Technical Hub
The system’s nerve centre is the Technical Hub, that hosts the PCC (Command and Control Post). There are an overall 120 people working in the 200,000 sq. m. premises of the Hub.
The area includes the depot, where the 23 trains currently in service are stored, the train maintenance workshops and the administrative offices that take care of line management and logistics. There is also a 750 m. test track where all train testing is performed.
The workshops are directly connected to the PCC by means of the SGM computer system (Maintenance Management System) which immediately signals any malfunction or breakdown on the trains or guideways by means of a dedicated network of sensors.
The trains are tested and serviced every 15,000 km. (approx. 2 months of running time), irrespective of any breakdown warnings; the “programmed” maintenance is arranged in such a way that there are never less than 19 trains in service at any one time.
Three different warehouses, connected to the SGM system, are located alongside the workshop (stations and guideways, trains, lubrification). The system handles the warehousing of the materials required depending on the repairs performed, in order to optimise the purchasing of spare parts.

The Comand and Control Post
The VAL system is designed to ensure the utmost safety by means of it’s Automated Train Control (ATC) designed specifically for these kinds of vehicle.
The system’s “brain” is the PCC (Comand and Control Post); by means of remote controls, sensor and closed circuit cameras, the operators in the control room can supervise all train manoeuvres including train in service dispatch, in service operation and train removal from service, in addition to being able to engage in two way conversations with travellers by means of the intercom system.
In the absence of operator intervention, the system can function completely automatically. The trains are driverless, and all their movements are controlled by safety devices and sophisticated computer systems located along the metro’s tunnels.
There are also smoke detectors and fire prevention systems that ensure that the traveller travels in complete safety.
The video-surveillance system, comprised of 549 cameras connected directly to the PCC, watch over the passengers safety at all times.

The metro and the town
The Metro is perfectly integrated with the surface public transport system, and by every station or within a few minutes walk of the various stations, there are 28 stops of the surface transport lines.
With the addition of the metro the GTT, Gruppo Torinese Trasporti (Turin Transportation Group), has now expanded the complex network of Turin Public Transport to include: 8 tram lines, 80 bus lines, 100 km. of tram lines, 1,000 km. of bus lines, over 5,000 employees who on a yearly basis transfer approx. 190 million passengers in the Turin and neighbouring areas.
Thanks to the creation of the metro system many surface neighbourhoods have also been refurbished: corso Francia, a tree-lined avenue and an ancient trunk road connecting Turin with France, and the squares of Massaia, Rivoli and Bernini have been completely redesigned, with most through traffic rerouted to the advantage of pedestrians and bicycles.

The building sites
The stretch under construction that will connect Porta Nuova to Lingotto, runs in a straight line under via Nizza. 6 stations are envisaged along this line, spaced at approximately 650 m. intervals: Marconi, Nizza, Dante, Carducci-Molinette, Spezia and Lingotto.
The works were begun in the spring of 2006 and will last for a total of 4 years.
Just as for the Fermi – Porta Nuova stretch, the works have been planned to reduce the impact of the sites on city life as much as possible. For the construction of the stations and the stretch of tunnel that from Porta Nuova will reach Marconi, the excavation will be performed using diggers working in a “cut and cover” mode, while for the construction of the stretch of tunnel running from Marconi to Lingotto, the TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) “mole” will be used; this means that for the most part the work will take place beneath the street level, thus helping to reduce dust pollution and any inconvenience to traffic flow.

Communication
Since 2000 the construction work and the opening of the metro service have gone hand in hand with a communication plan focusing on three main concerns:
• enhancing the value of this lightweight and dynamic underground metro project;
• managing the inconvenience afforded by the building sites and “listening” to the people affected in order to come up with shared solutions to the problems caused by the construction work;
• supporting the introduction of this new public transport system with the introduction of specific incentives and information material.
These include newsletters, flyers, posters, brochures, learning kits and school activities, events, discussion groups addressing construction management and impact assessment issues, guided tours of the building sites and an internet site www.metrotorino.it, full of updated information on how the service operates and how the construction work on the new stretches is proceeding.
The internet site has received the Italian Web Prize as “best site for 2006”.
