Eroticism has this in common with an addictive drug: that there is a coercive element to its pleasure with which part of us is in complicity, and part not. Thus ever since time began men have been trying to enjoy eroticism without being destroyed by it. Societies, religions can be defined in the way they deal with this conundrum. Polygamy, monogamy with repression, monogamy with affairs, monogamy with prostitutes, serial monogamy. Not to mention individual solutions of great ingenuity, or desperation: Victor Hugo with the door knocked through the wall of his office, to let in a girl each afternoon. Auden's flair for finding call-boys in every town. Picasso who simply refused when wife and mistress demanded he choose between them. Then there is always the hair-shirt of course. But perhaps the thing to remember when you wake up with a life full of fresh paint and tortuous complications is that eroticism wasn't invented for you, nor merely for the survival of the species perhaps, but for a divinity's entertainment. Nothing generates so many opportunities for titillation and schadenfreude as eroticism. Which is why it lies at the centre of so much narrative. How the gods thronged the balconies of heaven to see the consequences of Helen's betrayal! And your friends are watching too. Your antics have put the shine on many a late-night conversation.
On the borders between mythology and history, that wily survivor Odysseus was the first who learnt to trick the gods. And perhaps his smartest trick of all was that of lashing himself to the mast before the Sirens came in earshot. There are those of course who are happy to stand at the railings, even scan the horizon. Otherwise, choose your mast, find the ropes that suit you: sport, workaholism, celibacy with prayerbook and bell... But the kindest and toughest ropes of all are probably to be found in some suburban semi-detached with rowdy children and a woman who never allows the dust to settle for too long.

No hay ni que mencionar las soluciones ocurrentes o desesperadas a las que algunos recurrieron: Victor Hugo y el acceso que construyó a través de la pared de su despacho, para que cada tarde entrara una joven. El olfato de Auden para encontrar prostitutos en cada ciudad. Picasso, que sencillamente se cerró en banda cuando su mujer y su amante pretendieron que eligiera entre las dos. Few are the heroes of Morven in a land unknown.
Starno sent a dweller of Loda to bid Fingal to the feast; but the king remembered the past, and all his rage arose. «Nor Gormal’s mossy towers, nor starno, shall Fingal behold. Deaths wander, likeshadows, over his fiery soul! Do I forget that beam of light, the white-handed daughter of kings? Go, son of Loda; his words are wind to Fingal: wind that, to and fro, drives the thistle in autum’s dusky vale. Duthmaruno, arm of death! Ceomma-glass, of iron shields! Struhmor, dweller of battle’s wing!

Starno envió a un morador de Loda para invitar a Fingal al convite, pero el heraldo recordó el pasado , y se llenó de ira:
-Fingal no ha de ver los verdes murallones de Gormal, ni a Starno.
(¡La muerte se cierne como la penumbra sobre a su airada alma!)
¿Acaso he olvidado el rayo de luz con las blancas manos, la hija de reyes ?-.
- Ve, hijo de Loda, Ve…- Sus palabras braman a los oídos de Fingal como el viento que cimbrea el cardo en los sombríos valles al otoño.
-¡Duthmaruno , emisario de la muerte! ¡Oh, Ceomma-glass, escudo de hierro! ¡Oh, Struthmor, líder del flanco en la batalla!-
Respeto el nombre original.
Ossian, el narrador de estos cantos, era hijo de Fingal.
Literalmente: un cuento, una historia. Sin embargo, como parece una historia declamada por un bardo, prefiero traducirlo por “canto”.
Entiendo que el “thou” aquí tiene función de vocativo.
El viento. La fuente de los sentidos. La inspiración. El bardo llama a su inspiración para poder empezar a declamar.
El viento hace inclinarse a los cardos. Lo traduzco por acariciar.
Se refiere a un valle lleno de cardos.
El narrador.
Le está hablando a Malvina, su musa.
Le llega la inspiración, y tiene la visión de Lochlin.
“Dark bay” es un recurso visual, indica una escena ominosa, al igual que las aguas que ondean.
No veo claro si Fingal (o Finn) es un mercenario de Morven, o rey de Morven.
Una pasada tradición de Starno.
Lo pongo entre paréntesis, pues considero que es una especie de interludio dramático.
La hija de Starno. Agrandecca, asesinada por su propio padre por haberle revelado a Fingal un complot contra él.
El narrador señala que el viento suena en los oídos de Fingal, hablándole. Lo traduzco por “bramar” por ser un viento otoñal capaz de inclinar las plantas de cardo a un lado y a otro, y por estilo, como parte del “ crescendo” dramático donde a continuación pasa a llamar a sus guerreros.
