Who was El Cid Campeador?
(Have a look below!)

Who am I?

I have got a Spanish Licenciatura, BA Honours Degree, in Translation and Interpreting (English and German into Spanish) from the Spanish University of Salamanca (1999) and a MA in Conference Interpreting from the Spanish University of La Laguna (2004). Since 2005 I also possess a BA Honours Degree in Spanish Law.

Between October 1999 and January 2006 I worked in various countries (the UK, Germany, Belgium and Spain) as a translator/interpreter, as a teacher and as a trainee lawyer. Among others, I have translated into Spanish all screens and applications of an accounting software called APTOS (www.aptos.co.uk), a huge two-year task. As an interpreter, I had the chance to train in the booths of the EU Commission and the EU Parliament.

From February 2006 to February 2008 I worked as a lawyer for the prestigious Law Firm Garrigues in Spain. I then went back to working as a translator and a Lecturer in ULPGC University (Las Palmas, Spain) until July 2010, when I gained a position as a civil servant for the Regional Government of the Canary Islands.

I no longer work as a freelancer.

Who was El Cid Campeador?

El Cid Campeador (The Lord Champion), whose real name was Rodrigo (or Ruy) Diaz de Vivar, was a great popular hero of 11th-century Spain.

He was born in Vivar around 1040 and grew up in the household of the future King Sancho II of Castile. He won his countrymen's respect at an early age for his exceptional military ability. In the military campaigns against Aragon he distinguished himself as the King's premier knight.

After Sancho was assassinated in 1072, Rodrigo entered the service of the late King's brother, Alfonso VI. El Cid accused Alfonso of murdering Sancho and made him swear in public that he had not taken part in it. The new King never forgave him for this.

Having been sent to collect tribute from the King of Seville, Alfonso's vassal, el Cid was accused on his return, by his enemies, of having retained a part of it. Alfonso, finally finding an excuse to give free rein to his hatred, banished him from his dominions (1076).

Rodrigo offered then his services to the Muslim rulers of Saragossa, under whom he enhanced his reputation as a general through a series of brilliant exploits. He was given the title of seid or cid (lord, chief) by the moors and that of campeador (champion) by his admiring countrymen. He spent his first decade of exile fighting for various Christian and Muslim rulers and, despite the King's refusal to forgive him, he always claimed to remain loyal to Alfonso.

About 1087, back under the service of Christian kings, he began complicated political and military maneuvering that resulted in his conquest, in 1094, of the Kingdom of Valencia, which he virtually ruled until his death in 1099.

El Cid Campeador has been pictured in the ballad Cantar del mio Cid (13th Century) as a loving husband and father, and as a loyal and courageous soldier.
