Source text - French C'est ainsi que commença cette nuit mémorable, toute battue par les vents, striée par le balancement des lanternes, coupée de sonneries de trompettes insolites, d'allées et venues dans les couloirs, et des nuages, venus du nord se précipitaient contre les cimes rocheuses auxquelles ils laissaient des lambeaux accrochés, n'ayant pas le temps de s'y attarder. Car quelque chose de très important les appelait.
Un coup de feu avait suffit. Un modeste coup de fusil et le fort s'était éveillé. pendant des années, il n'y avait eu que le silence - et des hommes toujours tendus vers le Nord pour entendre la voix de la guerre qui s'approchait - un trop long silence. Maintenant, un coup de fusil avait été tiré - avec la charge de poudre réglementaire et la balle de plomb de trente-deux grammes - et les hommes s'étaient regardés tour à tour, comme si ç'avait été là le signal.
Certes, même ce soir là, personne, à part quelques soldats, ne prononce le mot qui est dans le cœur de chacun. Les officiers préfèrent ne pas le dire, car c'est justement là leur espoir. C'est à cause des Tartares qu'on a bâti les murs du fort, à cause d'eux qu'ils passent ici une grande partie de leur vie, c'est à cause des Tartares que les sentinelles marchent jour et nuit, tels des automates.
Translation - English This is how this unforgettable night started, battered by winds, streaked by the shadows of the swinging lanterns, interrupted by the unusual sound of trumpets, the pacing up and down in the corridors; and clouds from the north colliding against the rocky picks on which they left silver hanging off with no time to linger there. Because something very important was calling them elsewhere.
One gunshot had been enough. A discreet gunshot and the whole fort had woken up. for years there had only been silence - and men with an ear always stretched towards the North hoping to hear the sound of approaching war - far too long a silence. Now a gunshot had been fired - with the regulation powder load and the thirty gram lead ball and the men had looked at each other one by one, as if it had been the signal.
Admittedly, even that evening, no one, apart from a few soldiers dare to say the word in everyone's heart. The officers choose not to say it because this is where their hope is. It is because of the Tartars that the fort was erected, because of them that they spend here a big part of their life, because of the Tartars that the sentries walk day and night like robots.

I lived and worked in the UK for 13 years before moving back to France in 2010. While in the UK, I worked as a P.A for a French truck manufacturer (Chereau), as a Hotel manager and as an Account manager for a website developper (luxury hotel sector - Openworld). Back to France, for the last ten years I have been an English teacher and School Leader for one of the world's largest and most comprehensive school network (oneschoolglobal). For the last seven years, Ihave also been working as a translator and interpreter mainly for the CADA (Centre d'Accueil des Demandeurs d'Asile based in France) and for tourism agencies based in the UK. I obtained a masters'degree in English in 2016. I am now established as a dedicated freelance translator.
