Una nave affondata dai ghiacci del Polo Sud, trenta uomini che attraversano un deserto di ghiaccio, un viaggio per mare ai limiti dell’impossibile, un salvataggio miracoloso. L’epopea dell’Endurance e del suo equipaggio ha dell'incredibile, considerando che avvenne più di un secolo fa, con i materiali tecnici di allora, in un ambiente dove sopravvivere appariva un'impresa sovrumana.
Il suo destino è scritto già nel motto di famiglia. By Endurance We Conquer, noi conquistiamo con la tenacia. E non si sfugge al proprio destino. Nato nella contea di Kildare in Irlanda, emigrato a Londra a dieci anni, Ernest Shackleton è appassionato e irrequieto come un irlandese, tenace e indistruttibile come un inglese. A sedici anni è già per mare: mozzo, nostromo in seconda, nostromo di prima classe, infine master mariner, comandante. Ad appena ventiquattro anni ha già battuto le onde dell’Atlantico, del Pacifico, dell’Indiano. Ma soprattutto ha scoperto l’esistenza e il crudele fascino del Polo Sud, l’ultima terra ancora da conquistare. Non diventerà mai medico, come suo padre avrebbe voluto. Tenta senza convinzione di accontentare la giovane moglie Emily, accettando di lavorare come giornalista, poi come segretario della Royal Scottish Geographical Society. Prova anche a entrare in politica, ma purtroppo per Emily ha già posato i piedi sul pack, come terzo luogotenente in una spedizione antartica guidata da sir Robert Falcon Scott, durante la quale si era ammalato di scorbuto e aveva dovuto abbandonare l’impresa. Ma lì ha capito che quel freddo che consuma, quella luce senza pietà, quegli spazi infiniti di bianco crudele sono diventati il suo mondo, il suo futuro, la sua sfida. Nasce Nimrod, la prima spedizione tutta sua: due anni sul pack, la scoperta di un nuovo ghiacciaio che dedica a uno dei suoi finanziatori, il titolo di sir conquistato sul campo.
Il norvegese Roald Amundsen ha già raggiunto il Polo, e il suo rivale Robert Scott è morto di stenti dopo essere riuscito a piantare l’Union Jack accanto alla bandiera del norvegese. È osannato come un eroe in patria, anche se ha pagato il suo eroismo con la vita. Shackleton decide che un’altra impresa è possibile, così grandiosa da superare anche l’epopea dei conquistatori Amundsen e Scott: attraversare l’Antartide a piedi, con slitte trainate da cani, dopo essersi spinti più all’interno possibile con una nave. Un viaggio di 2.880 chilometri in un territorio quasi interamente inesplorato. Un’altra nave andrà ad attendere i coraggiosi esploratori sull’altro lato del continente di ghiaccio. Sir Ernest è un seduttore, un trascinatore, un formidabile venditore di sogni. L’Europa e il resto del modo stanno per precipitare nel baratro della Grande guerra, ma niente riesce a fermare il suo febbrile dinamismo. Così l’Aurora, baleniera da 600 tonnellate, salpa da Hobart, in Tasmania la vigilia di Natale del 1914. Dovrà costruire depositi e rifugi per chi riuscirà a compiere l’impresa. Mentre l’equipaggio destinato ad attraversare l’Antartide si imbarcherà su una baleniera nuova di zecca, la goletta norvegese Polaris, 350 tonnellate di robustissimi legni, un motore a vapore e uno scafo a V profondo. La splendida nave, nata per la caccia alle balene nelle acqua artiche, viene ribattezzata Endurance, tenacia. Come recita appunto lo stemma della famiglia di sir Ernest. E ne dimostrerà molta di tenacia, la povera goletta, contribuendo a costruire la leggenda di Ernest Shackleton e del suo straordinario equipaggio.
All’annuncio che si stava preparando una nuova spedizione avevano risposto in 5 mila, comprese tre donne. Il capo della spedizione ne ha scelti ventisei. Non solo marinai: oltre a sessantanove cani da slitta, ci sono anche due medici, degli scienziati, un carpentiere, un meccanico, un fotografo. E sarà proprio grazie a lui, al fotografo australiano Frank Hurley, se l’epopea dell’Endurance finirà per acquistare una consistenza “reale”. Senza le sue straordinarie immagini della nave che agonizzava sul pack, affondando giorno dopo giorno, senza quei ritratti nitidi e perfetti di uomini sfiniti, ma fieri, di barche trascinate sul ghiaccio, di mari in burrasca e immense onde di ghiaccio, del viaggio di Ernest Shackleton sarebbero rimasti solo i racconti. Invece Hurley ha dato corpo e sostanza alla straordinaria avventura, rendendola più vera del vero. Per la prima volta si poteva vedere la crudele bellezza di un mondo sconosciuto. Vederla, non solo immaginarla.
Ma c’è nell’equipaggio un altro uomo che ha contribuito a costruire la leggenda dell’Endurance. È piccolo di statura, con pochi capelli, una barbetta rada e due occhi di un incredibile azzurro. Si chiama Frank Wild, viene dalla Royal Navy, la Marina militare britannica. In undici anni ha fatto nove volte il giro del mondo, ma adesso anche lui si è innamorato del ghiaccio. È un uomo pacato e forte, una fonte di serenità per chiunque gli stia accanto. Ottimista, ma non superficiale, prudente senza essere vile. Ha salvato la vita a Shackleton nella prima spedizione che hanno fatto assieme, obbligandolo con fermezza a tornare indietro, frenando la dissennata bramosia del gigantesco irlandese, che senza di lui avrebbe continuato a marciare fino a perdersi.
L’Endurance salpa da Plymouth il 6 agosto del 1914, quattro giorni dopo l’invasione tedesca del Belgio. Shackleton ha offerto nave ed equipaggio alla patria in guerra, ma Winston Churchill, primo Lord dell’Ammiragliato, gli ha ordinato di non tergiversare, e di salpare per il Sud. Il 26 ottobre la nave salpa da Buenos Aires accompagnata dalle note di God Save the King, il 5 novembre raggiunge la Georgia Australe. A Grytviken, stazione di balenieri, gli confermano che il ghiaccio quell’anno sarà particolarmente difficile, e gli consigliano di attendere almeno un mese. Toralf Sorlle, baleniere norvegese, conosce bene la nave di Shackleton, e non è ottimista sulla sua sorte: lo scafo è troppo “stellato”, come si dice in gergo, ovvero con il profilo troppo acuminato, profetizza che i ghiacci finiranno per stritolarlo. Sarebbe stato meglio avere una nave come la Fram di Amundsen, sopravvissuta grazie al suo scafo tondeggiante. Nel frattempo l’equipaggio è aumentato di numero: è saltato fuori un clandestino, Perce Blackborow, 19 anni appena. Shackleton lo spedisce in cucina a pelare patate.
Il viaggio diventa difficile fin dall’inizio, il pack sembra davvero un muro impossibile da scavalcare. La nave avanza di pochi metri al giorno, approfittando quando può delle spaccature che si aprono all’improvviso nel ghiaccio. Ma subito la superficie torna a compattarsi e di nuovo l’Endurance si ferma. Il 19 gennaio Shackleton capisce che dovrà trascorrere l’inverno sul ghiaccio. Ordina di sbarcare i cani e di costruire dei rifugi per loro, ma anche di portare a terra la maggior parte delle provviste. L’Endurance però rimane ancora una cuccia sicura, calda e sufficientemente confortevole. Si gioca a biliardo, si ascolta musica, si gioca a calcio sul pack e si improvvisano buffi spettacoli teatrali, diligentemente fotografati da Hurley. Poi tutto precipita. Il ghiaccio sta vincendo, la morsa nella quale stringe la nave si fa sempre più serrata. Il ponte si piega, le costole iniziano a frantumarsi una a una. Il 27 ottobre il capo spedizione ordina di abbandonare la nave. «Nell’Endurance avevo riposto ambizione, speranza e desiderio», scrive nel suo diario. «Adesso, gemendo e stridendo, mentre i suoi legni si spezzano e le sue ferite sanguinano, sta lentamente morendo, proprio ora che la sua carriera era appena iniziata».
Vivrà ancora un mese, prima di sparire inghiottita dal ghiaccio. Il tempo per recuperare tutto quello che potrà servire nella lunga marcia verso la salvezza. Una marcia penosa, drammatica, fatta di minuscoli spostamenti che costano fatiche immense. Il pack è frastagliato come un mare in burrasca, trascinare tre scialuppe e tonnellate di materiale è un’impresa ai limiti dell’impossibile. A volte il ghiaccio si apre spaccando a metà il loro campo provvisorio, rischiando di inghiottire uomini, cani e viveri. Anche foche e pinguini, il loro pasto principale, sembrano scomparsi. Passano i mesi, e “Campo Pazienza”, l’enorme lastrone di ghiaccio sul quale sono accampati, inizia a sgretolarsi. Il 9 aprile 1916 si possono finalmente mettere in acqua le scialuppe. A bordo si soffre la sete, perché è quasi impossibile accendere il fuoco per sciogliere il ghiaccio. La temperature è di meno 20 gradi e tutti sono continuamente bagnati dagli spruzzi gelidi. Sette giorni dopo, all’alba, compaiono all’orizzonte le brulle scogliere innevate di Elephant Island. Deserta, scoscesa, inospitale, l’isola è lontana da tutte le rotte: nessuno verrebbe mai fin lì a salvarli. Shackleton capisce che deve andare in cerca di soccorsi. Sono passati 498 giorni dall’inizio della spedizione.
Sir Ernest sceglie cinque uomini e la scialuppa più grande: poco più di sei metri. Dovrà percorrere 870 miglia per raggiungere la Georgia del Sud, attraversando uno dei mari più terribili del pianeta. Lo farà in quindici terribili giorni di fame, freddo, paura. Come ultima beffa, la stazione baleniera di Stromness è dall’altro lato della costa, e Shackleton assieme a due compagni dovrà attraversare quasi 50 chilometri di massiccio montuoso prima di arrivarci. Tre fantasmi compaiono nella strada principale del piccolo porto, i balenieri li accolgono come figli che pensavano perduti. Sull’inospitale spiaggia di Elephant Island intanto 21 uomini aspettano che il loro comandante torni a salvarli. Hanno costruito un precario rifugio con le due scialuppe rimaste, e solo la ferrea determinazione di Frank Wild riesce ad impedire che si abbandonino all’inedia e si lascino morire. Il piccolo marinaio li obbliga a cantare, a tenere in ordine il loro miserabile rifugio, ad uscire ogni giorno in cerca di cibo. Mostra ottimismo, ripete che è sicuro che Shackleton tornerà presto. Blackborow, il giovane clandestino, ha un piede congelato. I due medici rimasti lo operano come meglio possono, amputandogli le dita per salvare il piede e la gamba. Zoppicherà per il resto della vita, ma è salvo. I viveri però stanno finendo, Wild li obbliga a cercare patelle sulla riva. E il 30 agosto, mentre si gelano le mani frugando nell’acqua bassa, George Marston alza gli occhi e vede una nave. Urla, ma nessuno pare sentirlo. Poi tutti vedono. Hurley incendia una latta di petrolio, e finalmente dalla minuscola nave calano una scialuppa. E un rimorchiatore vecchio e malconcio, lo Yelco. Sulla scialuppa la sagoma massiccia di Ernest Shackleton sembra quasi trascinare la piccola imbarcazione. Si sporge in avanti, e quando la barca accosta getta a terra pacchetti di sigarette e tabacco. Wild sorride, lo invita a scendere per visitare il loro miserevole rifugio. Il pazzo australiano deve stampare tutto quello che è riuscito a salvare. Sa che saranno quelle foto a garantire fama e ricchezza a lui e ai suoi compagni. Così accadrà, in effetti. Il denaro ricavato da quelle foto riuscirà anche a ripagare i finanziatori della spedizione. «Se Shackleton fosse vissuto al tempo dei vichinghi», scriverà il Buenos Aires Herald il 5 settembre, «i bardi avrebbero composto una saga in suo onore e l’avrebbero cantata nelle terre del Nord davanti al fuoco fiammeggiante». Anche Shackleton abbandona presto i festeggiamenti: deve correre a salvare i dieci uomini dell’Aurora rimasti sul pack per più di un anno. Ci riuscirà il 10 gennaio 2017, ma purtroppo riuscirà a salvarne solo sette. Tre se li era portati via il gelo dell’Antartide.
Sir Ernest Shackleton, morto durante la sua ultima spedizione, riposa in un piccolo cimitero della Georgia Australe. Accanto, la tomba del suo amico Frank Wild. A ship crushed and sunk by the ice floes at the South Pole, thirty men led across the desert ice pack, a hazardous sea journey and a miraculous rescue. The incredible odyssey of the Endurance and its crew took place more than a century ago, when surviving in such an environment with the technology of the time was an almost superhuman achievement.
Shackleton’s destiny was already inscribed in his family motto: “By Endurance We Conquer”. And you can’t escape fate. Born in County Kildare, Ireland, Ernest Shackleton emigrated to London at the age of ten. Half passionate, spirited Irishman and half
tenacious, adamantine Englishman, he went to sea when he was sixteen and moved up through all the ranks: ship’s boy, second mate, chief mate and, eventually, master mariner.
By the time he was just twenty-four years old, he had already sailed the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. But most importantly he had discovered the cruel charm of the South Pole, the last land yet to be conquered.
Contrary to his father’s wishes, he never became a doctor. He lukewarmly tried to please his young wife Emily by agreeing to work as a journalist and then as secretary of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. He even had a go at politics, but unfortunately for Emily, he
had already set foot on the Antarctic ice pack as third lieutenant in an expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott, but he fell ill with scurvy and was forced to give up. It was then that he realised, however, that the overwhelming cold merciless light and those immense hostile white spaces had become his world, his future, his challenge. He thus organised his own expedition aboard the Nimrod. He spent two years on the ice pack and discovered a new glacier (later dedicated to one of his sponsors). On his return, he received a knighthood for his achievement.
The Norwegian Roald Amundsen had been the first to reach the Pole. His rival, Robert Scott, died of exhaustion and cold after managing to plant the Union Jack next to the Norwegian flag. He was hailed as a hero back home, but had paid for his heroism with his life. Shackleton firmly believed another such feat was possible, a feat so great that it would overshadow even the epic journeys made by Amundsen and Scott. He decided to cross Antarctica on foot, with dog sledges, after having penetrated as far inland as possible by ship: a journey of 2,880 kilometres, in an almost entirely unexplored territory. Meanwhile,
another ship would await the brave explorers on the other side of the ice continent. Sir Ernest was a charmer, a great seller of dreams. Even though Europe and the rest of the world were about to plunge into the abyss of the Great War, nothing could quell his feverish enthusiasm. The Aurora, a 600-ton whaler, thus set sail from Hobart, Tasmania,
on Christmas Eve 1914. Its mission was to build depots and shelters for those who would make it across the ice. At the same time, the crew chosen to cross Antarctica embarked on a brand-new whaler, the Norwegian schooner Polaris (350 tons of very sturdy timber, a
steam engine and a deep V-shaped hull). Designed for whaling in Arctic waters, this impressive ship was rechristened Endurance, recalling the motto on Sir Ernest's family coat of arms. Indeed, the poor schooner was to show great “endurance” and contributed to
the legend of Ernest Shackleton and his outstanding crew. Some 5,000 people, including three women, replied to the announcement that preparations were being made for a new expedition. Shackleton singled out twenty-six of them. Not only sailors were to board the
ship: in addition to sixty-nine sledge dogs, there were two doctors, some scientists, a carpenter, an engineer and the Australian photographer Frank Hurley. Thanks to Hurley, the Endurance’s epic journey was given the true feel of reality. His photos are quite
extraordinary: the agonising ship stuck in the ice pack, sinking deeper and deeper day by day, perfect limpid portraits of the exhausted yet proud crew, boats being pulled over the ice, the blustery seas and the immense waves of ice. Without these images, Ernest Shackleton's voyage would not be much more than a series of tales. Hurley gave
substance to the extraordinary adventure, showing what it really had been like. For the first time ever, people could actually see – and not just imagine – the cruel beauty of that unknown world (200 photos of the expedition are collected in the book Shackleton in
Antartide, published by Nutrimenti).
There was another member of the crew who contributed to the Endurance’s legendary fame. Small and balding with a thin beard, he had incredibly sharp blue eyes. His name was Frank Wild and he had come from the Royal Navy. In eleven years, he had already
been round the world nine times. Then he also fell in love with that frozen world. He was a quiet, sturdy man, always able to calm down everyone around him. He was optimistic, but not superficial, prudent, but not faint-hearted. On their first expedition together, Wild saved
Shackleton's life by convincing him to turn back: the heroic Irishman’s foolhardy ambition would have driven them to march on until they were lost.
The Endurance put to sea from Plymouth on 6 August 1914, four days after the German invasion of Belgium. Shackleton offered both ship and crew to his warring homeland, but Winston Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty, ordered him not to dally and to head south.
On 26 October, the ship sailed from Buenos Aires accompanied by the notes of “God Save the King”. On 5 November, she reached Southern Georgia. At Grytviken whaling station, Shackleton was informed that the ice would be particularly bad that year and warned that he should bide his time for at least a month. Seeing what kind of ship Shackleton had, Thoralf Sørlle, a Norwegian whaler, expressed his pessimism about her fate: since the hull was too “narrow”, that is, with sharp wedge-like sides, he prophesied that she would eventually be crushed by the ice. It would have been better to have a ship like Amundsen’s
Fram, which survived thanks to its rounded hull. In the meantime, an extra crew member had come to light: a young stowaway called Perce Blackborow, barely nineteen years old. Shackleton sent him to the galley to peel potatoes.
The journey was difficult from the start. The ice pack really did look like an insurmountable wall. The ship could edge forward only a few metres a day, taking advantage, when possible, of the cracks that would suddenly open up in the ice. But the surface would then
immediately become compact again, forcing the Endurance to halt. On 19 January, Shackleton realised that he would have to spend the winter on the ice. He ordered the dogs to be disembarked and told his men to build shelters and unload most of the supplies. The Endurance was still a safe, warm and sufficiently comfortable place, where you could play billiards and listen to music; the crew played football on the ice and performed amusing theatrical improvisations, diligently photographed by Hurley. Then it all fell apart. The ice was winning the game, clutching the ship tighter and tighter. The bridge buckled and the ribs started breaking, one by one. On 27 October the expedition leader gave the order to abandon ship. “In the Endurance I had centred ambitions, hopes, and desires”, wrote Shackleton. “Now, straining and groaning, her timbers cracking and her wounds gaping, she is slowly giving up her sentient life at the very outset of her career.”
The ship hung on for another month before disappearing, engulfed by the ice. There was just enough time to salvage all the goods that might be useful for the long dire march towards salvation, when each dramatic, excruciating small step would require an immense
effort. The jagged ice floes, like stormy waves, made it extremely hard to pull the three lifeboats and the tons of supplies. Occasionally, the ice would crack up, fissuring through the pack that was temporarily hosting the men, who were often on the verge of being swallowed up with their dogs and goods. Their staple diet – seals and penguins – seemed to have vanished. Months went by and “Patience Camp”, the enormous floe where they had pitched their tents, started crumbling. On 9 April 1916, the lifeboats could finally be put in water. Since it was almost impossible to light fires to melt the ice, the crew went thirsty.
The temperature dropped to minus 20° C and they were always wet because of freezing spurts of water. After seven days, some barren, snow-covered cliffs appeared on the dawn horizon. The desolate island was steep, unhospitable, and far from all the shipping routes: no one would ever come to their rescue. Shackleton realised he would have to go and look for help: 498 days had passed since the beginning of the expedition. He chose five men and took the largest lifeboat, which was just over six metres. To reach South Georgia, they would have to make their way across one of the most treacherous seas in the world for 870 miles. It took fifteen terrible days of hunger, cold and fear.
By a cruel twist of fate, Stromness was on the other side of the coast, so Shackleton with two companions, then, had to trek through a mountain range for about fifty kilometres to reach the whaling station. The three spectres that appeared on the main road to the small
harbour were greeted by the whalers as if they were long lost children.
Meanwhile, stranded on the inhospitable beach of Elephant Island, twenty-one men were waiting for their commander to return and rescue them. They had built a precarious shelter out of the two remaining lifeboats: now only Frank Wild’s cast-iron determination could save them from starvation and death. The wiry seaman spurred them on to sing, to keep their squalid shelter shipshape and to go out every day in search of food. He was ever optimistic, repeating that they were safe, that Shackleton would soon return. Blackborow,
the young stowaway, got frostbite on his foot. The two physicians in the crew operated as best as they could, amputating his toes to save both foot and leg. He survived, but hobbled for the rest of his life. Since food was running out, Wild sent his men to look for limpets on
the shore. On 30 August, while they were groping in shallow water with freezing hands, George Marston lifted his gaze and saw a ship. He yelled, but nobody seemed to hear him. Then all the others saw it too. Hurley lit an oil barrel: a lifeboat was finally lowered from the ship, the Yelcho, an old, decrepit tug and cargo boat. The tiny lifeboat advanced, as though it was being pulled by Shackleton’s massive silhouette. The commander leaned forward and, as soon as the boat drew close, he tossed cigarettes and tobacco ashore.
Wild grinned and invited him to disembark and visit their squalid shelter. Shackleton, however, was afraid that the ice would soon unrelentingly lock them in again. His men didn’t know that this was his fourth attempt to reach Elephant Island.
On 3 September 1916, they finally landed at Punta Arenas (Chile) and were greeted by an ecstatic crowd. After that it was all revelries and banquets, pats on the shoulder, clean clothes and real beds. Except for poor Hurley. The Australian photographer had to print all the photos he had managed to save. He knew they would bring fame and wealth to both himself and his companions. And, indeed, the earnings from the photos were eventually enough to repay the expedition sponsors.
“Had Shackleton lived in the days of the Vikings”, wrote the Buenos Aires Herald on 5 September, “the bards would have composed a saga to his praise, & would sing it in the North land by the side of roaring fires.” Shortly afterwards, Shackleton also deserted the celebrations and rushed off to rescue the ten men from the Aurora, who had been
marooned on the ice pack for over a year. He succeeded on 10 January 1917, although unfortunately could only save seven of them: the bitter Antarctic cold had carried off the other three.
Sir Ernest Shackleton died on his last expedition and now rests in peace in a small graveyard in South Georgia. Next to him lies his trusty second-in-command Frank Wild. Without Frank, the adventure of the Endurance would have probably turned into a tragedy. In his last years of life, Frank had taken up cattle farming in Africa. He asked to be buried in the ice, however, at the side of his remarkable friend. His wish was fulfilled.

La sabbia del deserto del Namib ha inghiottito quel che resta dell’antica cittadina di Kolmanskop, nel sud della Namibia. Sorta nel 1908 come il centro dell’area mineraria della “Sperrgebiet” (area proibita), la città è stata un attivo centro di estrazione ed esportazione di diamanti fino al 1938. Edifici in rovina inondati dalle dune costituiscono la testimonianza del colonialismo tedesco
nell'Africa australe.
Kolmanskop è oggi un agglomerato di mura diroccate e pochi reperti corrosi dalla salsedine e dal rovente sole namibiano. Per raggiungerla si deve attraversare la distesa di sabbia che separa la città costiera di Lüderitz dal crocevia di Aus. Ai bordi delle ampie corsie della B4, che taglia i 26 mila chilometri quadrati del parco nazionale Tsau//Khaeb, i cartelli stradali intimano agli automobilisti di non lasciare il proprio veicolo e di non addentrarsi nell’area proibita. Ancor’oggi, infatti, la
Sperrgebiet è teatro delle operazioni minerarie della Namdeb, una joint venture tra il governo namibiano e De Beers, il colosso sudafricano dei diamanti.
Oltre ad essere una pittoresca meta del turismo di avventura, accessibile solo ai visitatori più intrepidi, Kolmanskop rappresenta una ricca testimonianza di un’epoca scomparsa. Tra i cumuli di sabbia e le travi crollate si celano i fossili di un impero coloniale, di battaglie dimenticate dalla storia e di una delle tragedie meno note del Novecento.
Costituita a inizio secolo dalla Deutsche Diamantengesellschaft, l’area protetta è a quel tempo il fiore all’occhiello del colonialismo tedesco. Altri territori del Secondo Reich comprendono gli attuali stati di Camerun, Togo, Tanzania, Ruanda e Burundi.
Tra il 1904 e il 1908, l’amministrazione tedesca dell’allora Africa del Sudovest si macchia del primo genocidio del Novecento, sterminando le popolazioni Sān, Herero e Namaqua. Il massacro precede di circa quarant’anni il processo di Norimberga, che condannerà i mandanti dello sterminio delle popolazioni ebraiche in Europa. A tutti gli effetti, il genocidio degli Herero fornirà un precedente all’olocausto negli anni Trenta e Quaranta.
Il generale Lothar von Trotha sancisce il destino delle popolazioni dei cosiddetti boscimani, in risposta alla ribellione anti coloniale guidata dal capo tribale Samuel Maharero. Il Vernichtungsbefehl (comando di sterminio) intima: «La popolazione Herero deve immediatamente lasciare la nazione. Chi si rifiutasse, sarà spronato a farlo dal “lungo tubo” [cannone]. Qualunque Herero si trovi all’interno del confine tedesco, con o senza un’arma da fuoco o una mandria, sarà giustiziato. Non risparmierò donne e bambini. Darò ordine di portarli via e far fuoco su di loro».
A partire dal 1905, quasi 3 mila tra Herero e Namaqua affollano il campo di concentramento di Shark Island, al largo di Lüderitz. Uomini, donne e bambini sono affamati, vittime di soprusi e costretti a lavorare in progetti infrastrutturali come la costruzione del porto e di una ferrovia che collegherà Lüderitz e Aus. I prigionieri verranno sterminati dal tifo e dallo scorbuto in un distretto che presto si trasforma in un cimitero di sabbia.
Solo qualche decina di prigionieri sopravviverà al genocidio, che in meno di cinque anni fa scomparire 65 mila persone. L’oblio della storia è il triste destino delle popolazioni Khoe-Sān, i cui discendenti si considerano oggi i figli dei «primi uomini».
È al termine del genocidio che l’impero tedesco istituirà la Sperrgebiet nell’entroterra di Lüderitz. A ritrovare il primo diamante è il lavoratore namibiano Zacharias Lewala, ex minatore al Big Hole di Kimberley, nell’attuale Sudafrica. Abituato a riconoscere gemme grezze, Lewala adocchia la pietra, che al supervisore August Stauch appare come un «pezzo di vetro», durante i lavori di manutenzione della linea ferroviaria Lüderitz-Aus. I funzionari dell’impero tedesco scopriranno così che un manto di minerali preziosi affiora su una superficie alluvionale che si estende dall’Orange River al deserto del Namib-Naukluft, come risultato di ere di pressione tettonica ed erosione dei filoni di kimberlite, la roccia madre dei diamanti.
Sale la febbre mineraria, che attrae esploratori in cerca di fortuna e ancora una volta costringe la manodopera locale a sforzi disumani in condizioni climatiche proibitive. Si costituisce così il villaggio di Kolmanskop (in tedesco Kolmanskuppe), che presto diventa il centro delle operazioni di estrazione in Africa del Sudovest.
Il governatore della colonia proclama l’istituzione della Sperrgebiet il 22 settembre 1908, con l’obiettivo di istituzionalizzare diritti minerari e norme di sicurezza, impedendo allo stesso tempo il propagarsi di operazioni minerarie abusive. Nel 1909 nasce la Deutsche Diamantengesellschaft, una compagnia sussidiaria della Deutsche Kolonial Gesellschaft, incaricata dell’area protetta.
A Kolmanskop, una comunità di quattrocento coloni e ottocento lavoratori costruirà non solo gli edifici amministrativi, ma anche una scuola, negozi, una palestra con sala da bowling e persino una gelateria. Un teatro e una sala da ballo forniscono svaghi per gli abitanti della cittadina e attirano i residenti di Lüderitz.
«Anche se il vento colpiva le finestre con frustate di sabbia», ricorda nel proprio diario la residente Marianne Coleman, «potevamo comunque apprezzare l’acustica perfetta del teatro».
Il documento, riportato in estratto da numerose fonti tra cui alcuni blog di ex residenti, fornisce una testimonianza diretta di un’epoca scomparsa, ma ancora viva nella memoria dei namibiani.
«A Kolmanskop c’erano anche un attivissimo club ginnico e un teatro che sponsorizzava concerti e operette da tutto il mondo e un’orchestra di otto elementi che suonava a tutte le serate danzanti e ai balli del té, il sabato e la domenica pomeriggio», scrive Coleman. «Le ragazze si presentavano vestite all’ultimo grido. Il club serviva té, caffè, birra e alcolici, mentre l’orchestra suonava musica
allegra. Alcune coppie ballavano il tango o il fox-trot. I più coraggiosi provavano il charleston».
In Kolmanskop Past and Present, Amy Schoemann e Helga Kohl scrivono: «Vestite alla moda in abiti di sartoria, le dolci metà dei re dei diamanti attraversavano a piedi le sabbie profonde, le loro mani sinistre appese al lungo treno coperte da guanti di cotone, mentre le mani destre tenevano cappelli ricoperti di piume e fiori, sospinti dalla forza del vento».
L’ospedale di Kolmanskop vanta la prima postazione radiologica nell’emisfero meridionale, talvolta utilizzata per smascherare ladri di diamanti che avessero ingoiato le pietre preziose.
Cinque milioni di carati (una tonnellata) di diamanti nutrono la sete di sfarzo della cittadina, che sfoggia una piscina nel mezzo del deserto, acqua corrente e automobili di lusso. Ogni anno, a Natale, uno struzzo trascina la slitta carica di regali per la gioia dei più piccoli e lo scompiglio della comunità.
«Penso che queste cittadine fossero dei piccoli paradisi in terra, nei primi anni, per via delle estreme difficoltà che dovevamo affrontare in un deserto così asciutto e spazzato dai venti», scrive ancora Coleman. «Mio padre diceva che vivere nel deserto non significa che casa tua debba sembrare un deserto», aggiunge l’ex residente, figlia del supervisore Ou Kat (vecchio volpone) Coleman, «a Kolmans mio padre aveva piantato quattro alberi di eucalipto, un piccolo giardino, un’aiuola di rose e dei gerani».
I contributi fiscali di Kolmanskop assommano a due terzi del prodotto dell’Africa del Sudovest. Nel 1912, il vicino insediamento di Pomona, sede dell’estrazione di guano, viene riconvertito a miniera di diamanti e vi affioreranno un milione di carati (due quintali) di minerali in tre anni.
Agli albori di Kolmanskop e Pomona, l’estrazione dei minerali è incredibilmente rudimentale. «Uno dei miei ricordi d’infanzia», afferma Coleman, «è quello dei lavoratori mandati nel deserto con barattoli di marmellata vuoti, una piccola pala e una scopa. Tornavano a sera con i barattoli pieni di diamanti. Le gemme più splendide si trovavano a Pomona».
È il 1915 quando, allo scoppio della Prima guerra mondiale, i generali sudafricani Jan Smuts e Louis Botha invadono la colonia dell'Africa del Sudovest per consegnarla all’impero britannico. I coloni tedeschi di Kolmanskop sono costretti alla fuga o alla prigionia. Le miniere di diamanti chiudono i battenti fino all’arrivo di nuova forza lavoro dalle miniere sudafricane di Kimberley e Cullinan.
«Ricordo le amare lacrime quando gli uomini sono dovuti partire, lasciandosi alle spalle donne e bambini», ricorda Coleman. «Tutt’a un tratto ci siamo ritrovati a essere parte di una guerra con cui non avevamo nulla a che fare, e che si stava combattendo a migliaia di chilometri da dove noi vivevamo in pace».
Le forze militari sudafricane liberano alcuni contrabbandieri di diamanti, tra i quali la famigerata Frau Zimmer. Era la proprietaria del bordello Green House, a Lüderitz, e nel 1913 era stata arrestata a Lourenço Marques (l’attuale Maputo, in Mozambico) con un guanto riempito di gemme nascosto nella cuccia del cane.
La Sperrgebiet a questo punto passa nelle mani della società De Beers. Nel 1926, il magnate Ernest Oppenheimer trasforma Kolmanskop nel quartier generale della Consolidated Diamond Mines of South West Africa.
A Kolmanskop l'estrazione dei diamanti viene allietata dal teatro dell'opera e i guadagno vengono dispersi tra gioco d’azzardo e fiumi di champagne fino agli anni Trenta, quando le operazioni minerarie si spostano a Oranjemund, sul fiume Orange. Dopo il 1945, l’amministrazione del protettorato sudafricano in Africa del Sudovest non impedisce che circa 9 mila nazisti, in fuga dalla Germania sconfitta, trovino rifugio nel Paese. Alcuni di questi si trasferiscono proprio a Lüderitz, già simbolo dell’efferato dominio del Reich imperiale.
Tre famiglie rimangono a Kolmanskop fino al 1956, quando l’avanzata delle sabbie del deserto diventa insostenibile e nei saloni in disuso non rimane che l’eco delle grandiose celebrazioni di un tempo. La decadenza di Kolmanskop è immediato e irreversibile. Dove non arrivano le tempeste di sabbia, i saccheggiatori depredano e vandalizzano ciò che resta dei ricordi di una generazione annientata dalla atoria. Ad aggravare le cose è la violenta guerra d’indipendenza namibiana, anche nota come Border War. Il conflitto porterà morte e devastazione negli anni Sessanta e Settanta, per mano del crudele regime razzista sudafricano.
Negli anni Ottanta, una famiglia tedesca rintraccia il proprio passato in Namibia e tenta di ristrutturare il villaggio minerario. In occasione del cinquecentenario della scoperta di Angra Pequena (la baia di Lüderitz ) da parte di Bartolomeu Dias, il casinò di Kolmanskop nel 1988 ospita l'ultimo spettacolo, prima di essere divorato per sempre dalle dune del deserto.
Travi dissestate, piastrelle distrutte e vetri scoloriti dal sole e dalla salsedine sono tutto ciò che resta, oggi, dei quarant’anni di splendore della gemma namibiana. Stanze e saloni inondati dalla sabbia non sono solo una meta turistica ormai evanescente, ma costituiscono anche l'attestazione di un capitolo importante nella controversa storia di odio e amore tra Namibia e Germania.
L'11 agosto 2020, il presidente namibiano, Hage Geingob, ha rifiutato una somma di 10 milioni di euro offerta dal governo tedesco come risarcimento del genocidio degli Herero. Un luogo come Kolmanskop, al centro di una regione ancora oggi sfruttata dagli eredi contemporanei del colonialismo tedesco e dell’imperialismo sudafricano, diventa testimonianza del complicato processo di decolonizzazione e di una ferita ancora aperta della storia del paese.
«Guardando Kolmans e altre cittadine, ora che se l’è prese il deserto, è difficile immaginare che un tempo questi posti pullulassero di gente, e che alcuni di loro avessero degli splendidi giardini in casa», osserva con nostalgia Coleman.
Tra qualche anno, dello sfarzo di Kolmanskop non resteranno che poche righe d'inchiostro sulle pagine sbiadite di un diario. Svanisce nella sabbia l’epoca in cui i diamanti affioravano nel deserto.

The carcasses of buildings, now surreal desert ghosts, bear witness to Namibia's mining past

The sands of the Namib desert swallowed up what remains of the former town of Kolmanskop in southern Namibia. Built in 1908 as the heart of the Sperrgebiet, a restricted mining zone, the town
was an active diamond mining and export centre until 1938. Submerged by the sand dunes, its ruins, are evidence of German colonialism in southern Africa.
Today Kolmanskop is a conglomeration of ruined walls and a few relics corroded by salt and the scorching Namibian sun. To reach you have to cross the stretch of sand between the coastal town of Lüderitz and the Aus crossroads. Along the wide lanes of the B4 cutting through the 26,000 square kilometres of the Tsau/Khaeb National Park road signs warn drivers not to leave their vehicles and or enter the restricted area. Nowadays mining operations in the Sperrgebiet are carried out by Namdeb, a joint venture between the Namibian government and De Beers, the South African diamond colossus.
Besides being a picturesque destination for adventure tourism, which only the most intrepid visitors will reach, Kolmanskop is vivid evidence of a lost era. Among the sand drifts and collapsed beams are the fossils of a colonial empire, of battles forgotten by history and one of the lesser-known 20th-century tragedies.
Established at the beginning of the century by a German diamond company, the Deutsche Diamanten-Gesellschaft, the protected area was a showpiece of German colonialism. Other Second Reich territories included the present-day states of Cameroon, Togo, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.
Between 1904 and 1908, the German administration of what was then South West Africa perpetrated the first genocide of the 20th century, wiping out the Sān, Herero and Namaqua peoples.
This massacre took place about forty years earlier than the Nuremberg trial, which condemned those who ordered the extermination of the Jews in Europe. To all effects, the Herero genocide was a precedent for the Holocaust in the 1930s and 1940s.
General Lothar von Trotha determined the fate of the so-called Bushmen in response to the anti-colonial rebellion led by tribal chief Samuel Maharero. His Vernichtungsbefehl (extermination order) decreed: "The Herero nation must now leave the country. If it refuses, I shall compel it to do so with the 'long tube'; [cannon]. Any Herero found inside the German frontier, with or without a firearm or cattle, will be executed. I shall spare neither women nor children. I shall give the order to drive them away and fire on them".
Since 1905, almost 3,000 Herero and Namaqua people were crammed into the Shark Island concentration camp, off the coast at Lüderitz. Starving men, women and children were victims of abuse and forced to work on infrastructure projects such as the construction of the port and a railway linking Lüderitz and Aus. The prisoners were eventually died from typhus and scurvy in a district that would soon turn into a sand cemetery.
Only a few dozen or so survived the genocide, which in less than five years caused the death of 65,000 people. The oblivion of history is the sad fate of the Khoe-Sān people: their present-day descendants consider themselves to be the children of the “first men”.
After the genocide, the German Empire created the Sperrgebiet in the hinterland of Lüderitz. The first diamond was found by the Namibian worker Zacharias Lewala, a former miner at the Big Hole in Kimberley, now in South Africa. Accustomed to recognising rough gems, Lewala noticed the stone – which the supervisor August Stauch deemed to be just a 'piece of glass' – during maintenance work on the Lüderitz-Aus railway line. The Imperial German officials thus discovered that layer of precious ore that had surfaced on an alluvial plain stretching from the Orange River to the Namib-Naukluft desert after eras of tectonic pressure and erosion of the so-called kimberlite pipes – the source rock of diamonds.
The diamond rush brought fortune seekers and once again forced the local workers to make inhuman efforts under harsh climate conditions. The village of Kolmanskop (Kolmanskuppe in German) was thus established and soon became the hub of mining operations in South West Africa.
The governor of the colony proclaimed the establishment of the Sperrgebiet on 22 September 1908, with the aim of institutionalizing mining rights and safety standards while preventing the spread of
illegal mining operations. In 1909, the Deutsche Diamanten-esellschaft, a subsidiary company of the Deutsche Kolonial Gesellschaft, was founded and entrusted with the restricted area.
In Kolmanskop, a community of 400 settlers and 800 workers built not only the administrative buildings, but also a school, shops, a gymnasium with bowling alley and even an ice cream parlour.
A theatre and dance hall offered entertainment for the local inhabitants and even allured people living in Lüderitz.
“While the wind whipped sand across the windows”, recalls onetime resident Marianne Coleman in her diary, “we enjoyed the perfect acoustics of the hall”. The document, excerpted in many sources
including some blogs of former residents, provides a first-hand description of a time gone by, albeit still alive in the memory of the Namibians.
“Kolmanskop also had a very active gymnastic club, a theatre which sponsored visits of shows and operettas from overseas and an eight-piece orchestra that played for all the formal dances as well as tea dances on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. All the ladies turned up in the latest fashions. The club served tea, coffee, beer and spirits while the orchestra played sweet music. Some couples did the tango or one step. The brave ones tried the Charleston.”
In Kolmanskop: Past and Present, Amy Schoemann and Helga Kohl described how: “Fashionably attired in well-cut outfits, the better halves of the diamond kings walked through the deep sand, their left hands mostly in cotton gloves, holding their long trains very stiffly, while their right hands held their feathered and flowered hats in place against the pressure of the wind.”
The Kolmanskop hospital boasted the first x-ray machine in the southern hemisphere, which was sometimes employed to unmask diamond thieves who had ingested precious stones.
Five million carats (a tonne) of diamonds fuelled the town’s lust for luxury, and it soon flaunted a swimming pool in the middle of the desert, running water and flashy cars. Every Christmas, an ostrich pulled a sleigh laden with gifts, to the joy of the children and causing a great commotion in the community.
“I think it is because of the hardships of life in the bleak windswept desert, that the little towns were such havens in the early years”, commented Coleman, who was a former resident and daughter of
foreman Ou Kat (Old Cunning Fox) Coleman. She adds: “Father said living in a desert did not mean your place must look like a desert… In Kolmans my father planted four eucalyptus trees, a small lawn, a rosebush and geraniums.”
Kolmanskop's tax payments amount to two thirds of the total in South West Africa. In 1912, the nearby settlement of Pomona, home of guano mining, was converted to a diamond mine and a million carats (200 kilos) of ore were extracted in three years.
Initially, in Kolmanskop and Pomona, the methods of ore extraction were incredibly rudimentary. "One of my early childhood memories”, says Coleman, “is of labourers being sent out with empty jam jars, a small spade and a hand broom, returning later in the day with jars filled with diamonds. The most beautiful gems were found at Pomona".
At the outbreak of the First World War in 1915, South African Generals Jan Smuts and Louis Botha invaded the colony of South West Africa and handed it over to the British Empire. The German colonists of Kolmanskop were forced to flee to avoid being imprisoned. The diamond mines shut down until new workers came from the South African mines of Kimberley and Cullinan.
“I can very well remember the bitter tears when the men left and the woman and children were left behind,” Coleman recalls. “Suddenly we were all part of a war we had nothing to do with, and that was taking place thousands of miles away from where we were living in peace”.
When the South African military forces arrived, they freed some diamond smugglers, including the infamous Frau Zimmer. She was the owner of the Green House brothel in Lüderitz, and in 1913 she
had been arrested in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo, Mozambique) with a glove full of gems hidden in her dog’s kennel.
The Sperrgebiet then passed into the hands of the De Beers company. In 1926, the magnate Ernest Oppenheimer turned Kolmanskop into the headquarters of the Consolidated Diamond Mines of
South West Africa.
In Kolmanskop, time off from diamond mining could be spent enjoying music in the opera house, while profits were squandered on gambling and champagne until the 1930s, when mining operations moved to Oranjemund on the Orange River. After 1945, the administration of the South
African protectorate did not prevent some 9,000 Nazis, who had fled Germany after the defeat, from finding refuge in South West Africa. Some of them even settled in Lüderitz, former symbol of the
Imperial Reich's heinous rule.
Three families remained in Kolmanskop until 1956, when the advancing desert sands could no longer be endured and the abandoned halls were only filled with the echo of yesteryear’s lavish
revelries. Kolmanskop’s decay was immediate and irreversible. Looters plundered and vandalised what the sandstorms had not buried: the remains of a generation of people annihilated by history.
To make things worse, the violent Namibian war of independence – also known as the Border War – brought death and devastation in the 1960s and ‘70s at the hands of the cruel South African racist
regime.
In the 1980s, a German family traced their origins to Namibia and tried to renovate the mining village. In 1988, on the 500th anniversary of Bartolomeu Dias's discovery of Angra Pequena (Lüderitz Bay), the Kolmanskop casino staged its last show before finally being eaten up by the desert dunes for good.
Rickety beams, smashed tiles and sun-stained glasses discoloured by salt are the last remnants of the gem of Namibia’s forty years of splendour. Rooms and reception halls flooded with sand have not only become an ephemeral tourist attraction but are also evidence of an important chapter in the controversial love-hate story of Namibia and Germany.
On 11 August 2020, the Namibian president, Hage Geingob, refused a sum of 10 million euros offered by the German government as compensation for the Herero genocide. Kolmanskop, at the
heart of a region still exploited today by the heirs of German colonialism and South African imperialism is evidence of the complicated process of decolonization and an open wound in the
history of the country.
“Looking at Kolmans and the other towns, after the desert had taken over, it is difficult to believe that these places were once alive with people, and that some of them had beautiful indoor gardens,”
remarks Coleman nostalgically.
In a few years, all that will survive will be a few lines of ink on the faded pages of a diary. The time when diamonds surfaced in the desert has vanished under the sand.
