Source text - Italian In una prima fase venne realizzata la parte inferiore del prospetto fino all’imponente balconata. Le tredici figure che la sorreggono sono raffigurazioni di turchi, di mori, di soldati accanto ad animali allegorici. Possiamo scorgervi la lupa capitolina o ancora il drago, il grifo, l’aquila, Ercole con la pelle del leone di Nemea. A queste figure, emblema delle forze che si scontrarono nelle acque di Lepanto nel 1571, corrispondono tredici putti sul parapetto, ognuno con i simboli dei poteri spirituale e temporale.
I fastosi portali vennero realizzati tra il 1606 e il 1607 da Francesco Antonio Zimbalo. Al centro
venne posto lo stemma del sovrano regnante in quel periodo, Filippo III di Spagna, e ai suoi lati le insegne della regina Maria d’Enghien e di Gualtieri VI di Brienne, due personaggi legati alla chiesa e al monastero. Il Duca Di Brienne, alla metà del Trecento, aveva favorito l’insediamento dei monaci Celestini in città e la costruzione della loro prima chiesa.
La parte superiore della facciata venne terminata alla metà del Seicento da Cesare Penna. Il grande rosone, contornato da file di cherubini e melograni, è uno dei simboli principali di Lecce e del suo famoso barocco.
Translation - English The first stage of construction covered the lower part of the façade up to its imposing balcony. Thirteen architectural sculptures were built to support it and portray Turkish soldiers, Moors, and allegorical beasts (like the Capitoline Wolf and the dragon, the griffin and the eagle, and Hercules with the Nemean Lion’s pelt). All these figures represent the opposing forces who clashed together during the naval engagement of Lepanto in 1571 and are matched, on the parapet, by thirteen putti carrying symbols of both spiritual and political power.
The sumptuously decorated doors were completed between 1606 and 1607 by Francesco Antonio Zimbalo. The emblem of the sovereign, Philip III of Spain, appears in the middle alongside those of Maria of Enghien and Walter IV, Count of Brienne, who were both involved with the church and the monastery. In the mid-fourteenth century, the Count of Brienne was in fact the first to encourage the settlement of the Congregation of the Celestines in town and the building of their first church.
The top of the façade was completed in the mid 17th century by Cesare Penna. Here we can observe one of the most prominent symbols of the city of Lecce and of its famed Baroque: a large rose window surrounded by rings of cherubs and pomegranates.
