Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.
The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?

but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. All dies wäre ja nicht weiter gravierend, wenn dadurch irgendetwas Bedeutendes geleistet würde und wenn all diese unaufhörliche Geschäftigkeit und Knipserei am Ende etwas Neues einfangen würde, was es noch nie gab: Bilder von einmaliger Schönheit oder Einblicke in die Wahrheit. Aber das ist leider nicht der Fall. Die Kamera ist inzwischen nichts weiter als die salonfähige Version von Graffiti.
Mit einer Kamera drücken wir allem, was wir sehen, unseren persönlichen Stempel auf, und zwar unter dem Deckmäntelchen, dass wir die Wunder der Welt für die Nachwelt aufzeichnen müssen - als ob diese nicht schon wunderbar von professionellen Fotografen abgelichtet worden und an jeder Ecke auf den Büchertischen und bei den Nachrichtenagenturen zu kaufen wären. Aber was nützt es uns schon, Tante Sofie zu Hause einen Haufen Postkarten von der toskanischen Landschaft zu zeigen, wenn wir nicht mit auf dem Bild sind und damit den Beweis liefern, dass wir wirklich dort waren?
Keine Klippe ist tatsächlich vorhanden, bevor ich darauf stehe. Kein Denkmal existiert, bevor meine Frau sich dagegen lehnt. Ohne mein grinsendes Gesicht daneben ist kein Tempel wirklich bedeutsam. Mit meiner Kamera eigne ich mir alles Schöne an, besitze es, mache es kleiner, zähme es und dann wird es auf meiner leeren Wohnzimmerwand reproduziert, um einem ausgewählten Kreis von Freunden und Verwandten die einzige, absolut entscheidende Tatsache über diese Schönheiten unter Beweis zu stellen: Ich habe sie gesehen, ich war dort, ich habe sie fotografiert, folglich existieren sie.

| | Source text - English The problem of being awkward with introductions is not, for many, an “unusual situation.” You may find that you are often uncertain about whether to introduce someone using their first name, last name, or both; about whether to use a qualifier (“this is my friend, ______”); even about whether or not it is in fact your responsibility to introduce two people in a given situation. But all of this is small potatoes compared with the seemingly inevitable mingling nightmare of having to introduce someone whose name you have forgotten.
It’s one thing to forget someone’s name if you’ve met them only once or twice, or if you haven’t seen them in a while. But all too often it’s someone whose name you really should know, and who is going to be insulted to find out you don’t. In other words, a faux pas in the making.
This is absolute agony when it happens, and I’ve watched hundreds of minglers try to deal with different ways, ranging from exuberant apology (“Oh GOD, I’m so sorry, JEEZ, wow, I can’t believe I’ve forgotten your name!”) to throwing up their hands and walking away. But there are better ways to deal with this kind of mental slip. Next time you draw a blank while making introductions, try the following ploy:
Force them to introduce themselves. This is the smoothest and most effective way to handle your memory lapse. When it’s done well, no one will ever suspect you. If you have forgotten one person’s name in the group, turn to that person first and smile. Then turn invitingly to a person whose name you do remember and say, “This is Linden Bond,” turning back casually toward the forgotten person. The person whose name you haven’t mentioned yet will automatically (it’s a reflex) say “Nice to meet you, Linden, I’m Sylvia Cooper,” and usually offer a hand to shake. | Translation - German Dumm da zu stehen, wenn man jemanden vorstellen muss – das ist für viele Menschen gar nicht mal so ungewöhnlich. Wem das passiert, der leidet wahre Qualen. Ich habe Hunderte von Menschen in Gesellschaft dabei beobachtet, wie sie damit auf unterschiedliche Art und Weise umgehen. Die Palette reicht von überschwänglichen Entschuldigungen („Oh GOTT, es tut mir so Leid!“, „Ach du meine Güte!“, „Auweia, ich kann es nicht fassen, wie konnte ich Ihren Namen bloß vergessen!“ ) bis zu hilflosen Gesten und dem Rückzug. Dabei gibt es bessere Möglichkeiten, mit so einem geistigen Ausrutscher umzugehen. Wenn Sie das nächste Mal bei einer Vorstellung unter Vergesslichkeit leiden, versuchen Sie es mit folgendem Trick:
Bringen Sie die andere Person dazu, sich selbst vorzustellen. Dies ist die eleganteste und sicherste Methode, Ihren momentanen Gedächtnisverlust zu überspielen.
