Phosphatidylserine molecules appearing on the surface of a cell are thought to signal to macrophages that the cell has undergone apoptosis because macrophages have phosphatidylserine receptors that, in test tube studies anyway, bind to this phosphatidylserine and pull it inside. The role of phosphatidylserine receptors in living organisms was not as clear. A team led by Professor Fukui of the Medical Institute of Bioregulation, Kyushu University has therefore studied the molecule's effects in mice genetically modified to lack phosphatidylserine receptor genes. |

A team at the National Institute Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) has boosted the microwave output of a self-excited oscillator based on a ferromagnetic tunnel junction. The electrical resistance of a magnesium oxide insulating layer between two magnetic layers depends on the angular difference between the magnetic fields in those layers. Applying an electrical current creates a torque forcing alignment. Precession then produces an electromagnetic wave. By measuring the effects of varying external magnetic field direction, current strength, and other conditions, the team was able to both optimize the resonance relaxation time and boost current-carrying capacity. Impedance mismatches, however, meant 90% losses in the wave guide, meaning that the actual output was at least ten times that measured. These results should find application in such radically new devices as memory elements linked with wireless communications. |

わが国では1960-70年代の高度成長期には、経済の発展とともに環境問題が大きな問題となった。そして公害による人体への影響への対応を起因として、環境教育・環境学習への関心が高まり始めた。例えば、1970年代には大腸菌も住めないほど汚染された北九州市の海には、現在100種類以上もの生物が生息しでいる。これは産学官民が一体となって取り組んだ効果であり、このような辛い経験を次世代に伝え、２度と同じ過ちを繰り返さないことが環境教青の命題である。環境教育が他の学習と異なる点は、環境教育1は単なる知識ではなく活動に参加し、行動することが求められている点である。 | Translation - English
Japan's boom years in the Sixties and Seventies brought unprecedented levels of economic growth, but at the cost of environmental impact. The need to counteract the adverse effects of pollution on the human body subsequently led to increased interest in environmental education and training. The waters around Kita Kyushu City, for example, were so polluted in the Seventies that not even fecal bacteria (E. coli) could survive. Now they support at least 100 species. This cleanup was only possible through concerted efforts by industry, academia, government, and the general public. An important goal of environmental education therefore is to pass on the lessons learned from this bitter experience and thus avoid repeating such mistakes. Environment training differs from other forms of training in going beyond the mere passing on of knowledge to stress action in the form of participating in conservation and cleanup activities. |

Sunlight is a gift from heaven that falls freely upon Earth. If we could harness this boundless source of energy, just one hour's worth would satisfy the annual energy consumption needs for entire world, so solar power generation is working toward this goal. Japan leads the world in market penetration and enjoys a 50% share of world production. The downside, however, is that converting sunlight into electricity is no easy task. The conversion ratios offered by current technology are at best 15%. Monocrystalline silicon, the material most frequently used, is black and rigid, a combination that limits the range of feasible installation locations. Research has therefore turned to nanotechnology-based materials. Dye-sensitized solar batteries mixing dyes and particles with diameters measured in nanometers, for example, could be used almost anywhere. Efforts are also underway to boost conversion efficiency with thin-film battery materials, nanoparticles, and even quantum nanostructures. |

Gamma rays, at the high end of the electromagnetic spectrum, result from high-energy physical events, so a gamma ray telescope's view of outer space is much different from that visible to the naked eye. A gamma ray large area telescope (LAT), the principal observation equipment used, determines the position of the gamma ray source by measuring the tracks of the electron and positron pairs that the gamma rays produces in the detector. Calorimeter measurements of particle energies then allow determination of the gamma ray energy. One such track detector, designed at Hiroshima University and manufactured by Hamamatsu Photonics, uses approximately 10,000 high-performance semiconductor sensors to boost observation precision some 30 times. |
