Procesele de epurare biologice se bazeaza pe principiul epurarii cu namol activat, in prezenta oxigenului din aer, utilizand microorganisme biologice pentru indepartarea compusilor organici din apele uzate menajere. Totodata, prin procesele de nitrificare-denitrificare se vor indeparta pe cale biologica si azotul si fosforul. Treapta biologica este urmata de un proces de sedimentare in urma caruia se separa namolul activat de apa epurata.
Namolul in exces din instalatie este stabilizat aerob: fiind inodor si non-toxic si poate fi folosit in agricultura.

Biological purification processes are based on the activated sludge purification principle under the presence of air oxygen, using biological microorganisms to discard organic compounds from domestic waste waters. At the same time, by the nitrification-denitrification processes Nitrogen and Phosphorus shall be biologically eliminated. The biological step is followed by a settling process that separates the activated sludge from the purified water.
The excess of sludge is stabilized aerobically: being inodorous and non-toxic and can be used for agriculture.
