But, one might justifiably ask, does one op/ed in one paper really mean anything?
Though it is silly to think that writing in and of itself will bring change, it is not silly to believe in the power of writing. Most people can think of a piece of writing -- whether a newspaper op/ed, a great novel, or a brilliant political book -- that changed them in some way.
On occasion I get letters from people who tell me that an op/ed or an article I wrote made a difference in their lives. All it takes is one of those letters every so often to keep me writing. A pesar de que resulta tonto pensar que el acto de escribir en sí y por sí mismo pueda producir un cambio, no es tonto creer en el poder de la palabra escrita. La mayoría de las personas pueden recordar un texto - ya sea una columna de opinión de un periódico, una novela excelente o un libro político brillante - que las haya cambiado de alguna manera.
A veces recibo cartas de personas que me cuentan que una columna de opinión o un artículo escrito por mí ha marcado una diferencia en sus vidas. Sólo basta una de esas cartas ocasionales para que siga escribiendo. Prácticamente todos los días leo palabras que alguien ha escrito y que marcan una diferencia en mi vida; eso también hace que siga escribiendo. |
