La période de paix qui fait suite à la guerre de Cent Ans se prolonge en Champagne au début du XVIe siècle. Sous Louis XII et François Ier12 le royaume de France est à nouveau en guerre, mais les opérations n'intéressent généralement que la périphérie de la province et le calme continue à régner dans les districts viticoles. En 1544 toutefois, première alerte : les troupes de Charles Quint incendient Vitry et descendent la vallée de la Marne jusqu'à Château-Thierry. François Ier se voit dans l'obligation d'incendier Épernay pour ne pas laisser aux mains de l'ennemi les approvisionnements qui y étaient amassés.
À partir de 1562, les guerres de religion ramènent dans toute la région désordre et violence. En 1563, l'abbaye d'Hautvillers est détruite et les religieux doivent s'abriter à Reims où ils resteront une quarantaine d'années. Les idées luthériennes pénètrent de bonne heure en Champagne, notamment à Troyes, Châlons, Sézanne, et même à Reims, pourtant fief des archevêques de la famille de Guise13 et de la Ligue. Si les campagnes sont très éprouvées, les villes du vignoble souffrent assez peu. Épernay, restée résolument catholique, est cependant l'objet de durs combats en 1586 et dans les années suivantes. En 1592, Henri IV vient en personne assiéger la ville, tenue par les Ligueurs, et a la douleur de voir son ami le maréchal de Biron tué par un boulet à ses côtés. Voici ce qu'en dit Philippe-Valentin Bertin du Rocheret dans ses Œuvres meslées14 :
Pendant le siège d'Épernay qui commenca le 24 juillet 1592, l'armée du Roy Henri IV étant campée à Choüilly, ce Prince alloit souvent à Damery rendre visite à la Présidente du Puy qui y demeuroit dans son Vendangeoir... Un jour qu'il en revenoit au petit galop, le vent fit sauter son chapeau en abordant la chaussée du faubourg d'Igny. Le Maréchal de Biron le releva et le mit en badinant sur sa teste, le panache blanc dont il était orné le fit remarquer au nommé Petit, maître d'artillerie de la Ville, qui visant au plumet blanc dit à ses camarades : «Au Bearnois!» En effet ayant braqué son canon appelé le Chien d'Orléans, il fit sauter la teste au Maréchal le 4 août 1592.
La Champagne sombre à nouveau dans la misère. Claude Haton, curé d'une paroisse de l'Aube, en témoigne : On ne voudra croire les tormens qu'ont enduré les pauvres gens des villages en leur corps, esprit, âme, biens, bestial et autres choses, tant les hommes que les femmes et par gens de leurs propres nations (400). Jean Pussot, maître charpentier de Reims et propriétaire de vignobles, note dans son Journalier en 1592 : Les troubles continuoient, saulf quelque petite trêve qui fut faicte avec ceulx de Chalons pour le recueil des vendanges et chariage des vins. Et plus loin : En ce temps régnoit une autre affliction, c'est que les loups avoient telle domination sur le corps humain qu'ils se jettoient et dévoroient plusieurs gens, tant aux champs, vignes, que dans les villages. La peste règne en 1598 mais cette même année, apportant enfin des perspectives de paix et de tranquillité après un demi-siècle de malheur, le traité de Vervins est signé par Philippe II d'Espagne et Henri IV, lequel fera en 1606 son entrée à Reims.
Le vignoble a pâti durement pendant cette période mais on a tout de même continué à produire des vins, à les vendre, et même... à les donner. C'est une coutume, à cette époque, d'offrir aux personnages importants des vins de ville15, pour leur rendre hommage, obtenir leur protection ou les honorer lors de leur visite. Exemple entre mille, un procès-verbal d'une assemblée de la ville d'Épernay, en date du 25 mai 1540, fait état d'un cadeau de vingt poinçons de vin au seigneur de Guise.
Dans les années difficiles, le commerce avait bien évidemment été entravé par le mauvais état des routes et la présence des gens de guerre, encore que ceux-ci aient été parfois des clients accomodants. D'après Pussot, en 1579, les vins qui furent gellés n'estoient guère bons et ne valloient à Noël que XV L. La queue. Le camp de devant la Fère les fict vuider à XV L. la queue (511).
Cependant, la guerre n'entraînait pas une impossibilité absolue de commercer avec l'ennemi, ainsi que l'atteste un placcart de Philippe IV, roi d'Espagne, publié à Bruxelles, et permettant par forme d'essay, et de tollerance provisionelle pour l'année de la vendange dernier, de faire entrer des vins d'Ay ou de charroy des pays ennemis, sans pour ce devoir obtenir autre licence, ou passeport particulier (489). Les places d'entrée citées sont Cambrai, Valenciennes, Avesnes, Philippeville, Marienbourg, Luxembourg, Montmédy, Givet, et l'autorisation s'applique à ceulx se voicturant par la rivière de Meuze, et aux marchans ou voituriers ennemys. En effet, exporter est devenu chose courante et on sait, par exemple, que Frère Geoffroy Piérard, procureur de l'abbaye Saint-Martin d'Épernay, vend en 1561 à ung marchant de Liège quarante pot nssons de vin clairet au prix de vingt-et-une livres la queue (72) .
C'est la paix de Vervins qui marque la reprise de l'expansion des vins de Champagne. Ceux-ci ne sont encore désignés que par le nom de leur cru, ou par l'expression vins de Rivière, s'il y a lieu, ou encore par le nom de la cité qui en fait le commerce, comme c'est le cas pour les vins de Rheims16. Les vins de Champagne ne commencent à être nommés ainsi qu'aux environs de 1600 (175) , et ne le seront couramment que dans la deuxième moitié du XVIIe siècle. Leur renommée s'établit lentement, comme on l'a vu en examinant la nature des vins servis aux sacres des rois de France, et Dom Chastelain fera preuve d'optimisme en écrivant au XVIIIe siècle : Sous François Ier et Henri II le vin de Reims prit faveur par tout (308). Dans la Maison rustique (200) , bréviaire agricole paru en 1586, on cite à plusieurs reprises, à partir du chapitre V du livre VI, des lieux viticoles. Sont ainsi nommés Beaune, bien évidemment, Rochelle (La Rochelle), Bourdeaux, Chabyles (Chablis), Tonnerrois, Auxerrois, Angevin, Languedoc, Provence. Mais ce n'est qu'au chapitre XXII qu'apparaît enfin un nom champenois : Les vins d'Ay, comme sont moins vineux que ceux cy , aussi sont salubres sans comparaison. Et plus loin on indique que les vins d'Ay sont clerets et fauvelets, subtils, delicats et d'un goust fort agreable au palois, pour ces causes souhaistez pour la bouche des Roys, Princes et grands Seigneurs. L'auteur de la Maison rustique précise cependant qu'il préfère personnellement les vins de Bourgogne aux vins d'Orléans et d'Ay, desquels l'on fait si grand cas à Paris.
De tout cela on peut conclure qu'à la fin du XVIe siècle les vins de la province de Champagne ont encore peu de renom; mais on note en même temps que le cru d'Ay17 a une réputation particulière. En 1601, Nicolas Abraham de la Framboisière reprend à son compte l'éloge de la Maison rustique en terminant comme suit, dans son traité, le chapitre consacré aux vins :
Pour juger de la bonté et qualité des vins, faut soigneusement regarder quel est l'estat et constitution de chacune année, et en gouster tous les ans, pour en donner le jugement assuré. Quelques années les vins de Bourgogne gagnent le prix; autres années les vins d'Orléans surpassent; aucunes années les vins d'Anjou sont plus excellens que tous les autres; et le plus souvent les vins d'Ay tiennent le premier lieu en bonté et perfection (330).
Cette bonne réputation remonte en fait au début du XVIe siècle: en 1518, l'amiral de Bonnivet écrivait à son ami le cardinal Wolsey, chancelier d'Angleterre, pour lui annoncer que vingt poinçons de vin d'Ay venaient de lui être expédiés (69). Elle remonte même plus loin si on donne crédit à l'anecdote selon laquelle Sigismond de Luxembourg, roi de Hongrie et futur empereur germanique, aurait en 1410 fait un détour, durant un voyage en France, pour goûter sur place les vins d'Ay (66).
On a souvent prétendu que les rois, et même les papes, étaient propriétaires de vendangeoirs à Ay, où on montre une ancienne maison à colombages comme ayant été celui d'Henri IV. Malgré les liens qui unissaient le Vert-Galant et le jurançon, on peut penser que sa popularité s'accordait bien avec celle des vins d'Ay. D'où l'anecdote que l'on trouve dans l'avertissement d'un Recueil de poésies latines et françaises sur les vins de Champagne et de Bourgogne paru en 1712. Il s'agit d'une réception par Henri IV de l'ambassadeur d'Espagne. Celui-ci qualifiant le Roy son maître, de Roy de tous les Royaumes qui composent la Monarchie d'Espagne, et les nommant l'un après l'autre, sans en omettre un seul, « Vous direz, lui dit Henri IV, en l'interrompant, au Roy d'Espagne, d'Arragon, de Castille, de Leon, etc., que Henry, Roy de Gonesse et d'Ay, etc.» Ce bon prince n'opposoit aux qualités du Roy d'Espagne, que celle de Roy du bon Pain et du bon Vin. L'anecdote a été reprise, sous une forme un peu différente, dans le Mercure de France de janvier 1728.
Comme Henri IV, Saint-Evremond18 apprécie les vins d'Ay. Il écrit ce qui suit dans une lettre qu'il envoie, à la fin de l'année 1674, au comte d'Olonne qui vient d'être exilé dans ses terres :
Accommodez, autant qu'il vous sera possible, votre goût à votre santé. N'épargnez aucune dépense pour avoir des Vins de Champagne, fussiez-vous à deux cents lieues de Paris. Si vous me demandez lequel je préfère de tous les vins, sans me laisser aller à des modes de goûts qu'introduisent de faux délicats, je vous diroi que le vin d'Ay est le plus naturel de tous les vins19 , le plus sain, le plus épuré de toute senteur de terroir, et d'un agrément le plus exquis par son goût de pêche qui lui est particulier, et le premier, à mon avis, de tous les goûts. Léon X, Charles Quint20, Franfois premier, Henry VIII21, avoient tous leur propre Maison dans Ay ou proche d'Ay, pour y faire plus curieusement leurs provisions. Parmi les plus grandes affaires du monde qu'eurent ces grands princes à démêler, avoir du vin d'Ay ne fut pas un des moindres de leurs soins (559).
Sutaine, dans son Essai sur l'histoire des vins de Champagne, reprend à son compte ces affirmations et note qu'il existe encore une contrée appelée « le Léon », probablement du nom de son ancien propriétaire Léon X22. Il est possible qu'il y ait eu à Ay des vendangeoirs appartenant aux souverains de la Renaissance, mais plus probablement ceux-ci se contentaient d'y entretenir et de loger des pourvoyeurs chargés de s'y procurer les vins de Rivière. Il est incontestable que le terroir d'Ay donnait dès le XVIe siècle d'excellents vins. Il est non moins certain que le vocable vins d'Ay englobait d'autres vins de Rivière, ce qui était tout à l'honneur des localités qui les produisaient, et aussi tout à leur avantage puisqu'elles bénéficiaient ainsi du prestige d'Ay et de sa situation de place commerciale, importante pour l'époque.

The period of peace which followed the Hundred Years War continued in Champagne until the beginning of the sixteenth century. Under Louis XII and François I12 the kingdom of France was again at war, but military operations generally only involved the outskirts of the region, and calm continued to reign in the wine-producing areas. However in 1544 the first signs of danger appeared: the troops of Charles Quint burnt Vitry and descended the Marne Valley as far as Château-Thierry. François I found himself obliged to burn Epernay in order not to let the supplies that were stored there fall into the hands of the enemy.
From 1562 the religious wars brought violence and disorder to the entire region. In 1563 the abbey of Hautvillers was destroyed and the monks had to take shelter in Rheims where they remained for forty years. Lutheranism arrived early in Champagne, especially in Troyes, Châlons, Sézanne, and even in Rheims, which was the stronghold of the archbishops of the Guise13 family and the Holy League. Even though the campaigns were harsh the vineyard towns did not suffer very much. Epernay, remaining resolutely Catholic, was however the site of fierce fighting in 1586 and in the following years. In 1592 Henri IV came in person to lay siege to the town, held by the soldiers of the League, and had the misfortune to see his friend the Marshall of Biron killed by a cannonball by his side. Here is what Philippe-Valentin Bertin du Rocheret wrote in his Œuvres Meslées14 :
During the siege of Epernay, which began on 24 July 1592, the army of King Henri IV was camped at Choüilly, the Prince going often to Damery to visit the President of Puy who lived there in her Vendangeoir... One day he was coming back at a slow gallop and the wind blew off his hat as he reached the road from the suburb of Igny. The Maréchal of Biron picked it up and put it in jest on his own head, the white plume that decorated it caught the eye of Petit, the head gunner of the town, who, aiming at the white plume said to his comrades: "To the King!" And indeed pointing his cannon, known as the Dog of Orleans, he blew off the the Maréchal's head on 4 August 1592.
Champagne again sank into misery. Claude Haton, the curate of a parish in the Aube, wrote, "One cannot believe the suffering that the poor people of the villages have endured, not just physically, but also in their minds and souls, and in terms of their belongings, their livestock, and other things, men and women equally, and at the hands of their own people" (400). Jean Pussot, a master carpenter of Rheims and owner of vines, noted in his Journalier in 1592, "The troubles continue, except for a short truce that was made with those of Chalons for the taking in of the harvest and transporting of the wines." And then later, "In this time there is another affliction, which is that the wolves have become so fearless that they have leapt upon and devoured several people, not only in the fields but in the vines and villages." The plague struck in 1598 but the same year also finally brought the promise of peace and tranquillity after half a century of misery, the Treaty of Vervins was signed by Philippe II of Spain and Henri IV, who was to enter Rheims in 1606.
Vineyards suffered greatly during this period, but did nevertheless continue to produce wine, sell wine, and even to give wine! For it was customary in those times to offer important people the vins de ville (the town's wines)15, as a sign of respect, and to obtain their protection or to honour them during their visit. As an example from amongst thousands, the minutes of an assembly of the town of Epernay on 25 May 1540, records a gift of twenty poinçons of wine to the Seigneur de Guise.
During these difficult years commerce was obviously hindered by the poor condition of the roads and the presence of various warring parties, even though the latter were sometimes good customers. According to Pussot in 1579, wines which had been frozen were rarely good, and were only worth VII L a "queue" at Christmas. The camp in front of the Fère took them for XV L a queue (511).
However it was not entirely impossible to trade with the enemy, as demonstrated by a "placcart" published by Philippe IV, the King of Spain, in Brussels, permitting "on a trial basis, and with provisional tolerance for the year of the last harvest, the entry of the wines of Ay or Charroy from enemy territory, without the requirement of another licence, or special passport"(489). The places of entry listed were Cambrai, Valenciennes, Avesnes, Philippeville, Marienbourg, Luxembourg, Montmédy, Givet, and the authorization applied to those transporting by the Meuze River, and to merchants or enemy carriers. Indeed, export had become a common practice, and we know for example that Brother Geoffroy Piérard, procurator of the abbey of Saint-Martin of Epernay, sold in 1561 to a merchant from Liège forty " poinssons" of claret wine for the price of twenty one pounds a queue (72) .
It was the peace at Vervins that marked the renewal of the growth in Champagne's production of wines. These were still only known by the name of their cru (vineyard), or by the expression vins de Rivière, if the need arose, or by the name of the city where they were sold, as in the vins de Rheims16. The term vins de Champagne did not appear until around 1600 (175) , and did not become commonly used until the second half of the seventeenth century. Their reputation was established slowly, as we saw in the study of the wines served at the coronations of the kings of France, and Dom Chastelain reflects the general optimism when he wrote in the eighteenth century, Under François I and Henri II the wine of Reims took favour everywhere (308). In the Maison Rustique (200) , a farming manual that appeared in 1586, wine-producing areas are listed several times, from chapter V onwards of book VI. Thus we find Beaune, which comes as no surprise, Rochelle (La Rochelle), Bourdeaux, Chabyles (Chablis), Tonnerrois, Auxerrois, Angevin, Languedoc, and Provence. But it is only in chapter XXII that a name from Champagne finally appears, The wines of Ay, being less vinous than these, are also salubrious beyond comparison. And then further on we are told that the wines of Ay are claret and tawny coloured, subtle, delicate and of a very agreeable flavour, and for these reasons are desired for the mouths of Kings, Princes and great Lords. The author of the Maison Rustique does however declare that his personal preference is for the wines of Burgundy, rather than those of Orléans and Ay, which are so appreciated in Paris.
All of this suggests that, at the end of the sixteenth century, the wines of the Champagne region were still comparatively little known, although the wines of Ay17 would seem to have gained a certain reputation. In 1601 Nicolas Abraham de la Framboisière produced a new version of the Maison Rustique, and concluded in his treatise in the chapter devoted to wines:
To judge the character and quality of a wine one must look carefully at the state and constitution of each year, and taste it every year in order to pass a sound judgement. Some years the wines of Burgundy take the prize; in other years the wines of Orleans surpass all; in no years are the wines of Anjou more excellent than all the others; and most often the wines of Ay hold first place in quality and perfection (330).
This reputation can in fact be traced back to the beginning of the sixteenth century: in 1518 Admiral de Bonnivet wrote to his friend Cardinal Wolsey, the Chancellor of England, to tell him that twenty poinssons of Ay wine had just been sent to him (69). There is even earlier evidence if we are to believe the story according to which in 1410 Sigismond of Luxembourg, the King of Hungary and future Emperor of Germany, made a detour during a journey through France in order to taste the wines of Ay (66).
It is often supposed that kings and even popes, had vendangeoirs ("harvest houses") in Ay, where an old half-timbered house is presented as having been that of Henri IV (see illustration below). Despite the links between the Vert-Galant (one of Henri IV's nicknames meaning "the indefatigable romantic") and Jurançon (as a baby his grandfather is said to have moistened his lips with the wine of Jurançon) one might think that his popularity would be well matched with that of the wines of Ay. From which must come the anecdote that appears in the foreword of an Anthology of Latin and French Poems on the Wines of Champagne and Burgundy that was published in 1712. The occasion was the reception of the ambassador of Spain by Henri IV. The ambassador referring to his own king as the king of all the kingdoms that make up the Monarchy of Spain, and listing them one after the other, without omitting a single one, "You will say," Henri IV interrupted him, "to the King of Spain, of Arragon, of Castille, of Leon, etc., that Henry, King of Gonesse and Ay, replies...." The good King setting against all the kingdoms of the King of Spain only those of Good Bread and Good Wine. The anecdote was repeated in a slightly different form in the Mercure de France in January 1728.
Like Henri IV, Saint-Evremond18 appreciated the wines of Ay. He wrote the following in a letter that he sent towards the end of 1674, to the Count of Olonne who had just been exiled in his country:
Adjust your tastes to your health as much as you can. Spare no expense in order to have the wines of Champagne, you need go but two hundred leagues from Paris. If you ask me which of these wines I prefer then, without indulging in attempts at pretentious refinement, I would say that the Ay wine is the most natural of all the wines19 , and the most wholesome, it has a purity that transcends the earthiness of other wines, and an exquisite peach flavour that adds greatly to its charm, and in my opinion accounts for its unique character. Léon X, Charles Quint20, Franfois I, and Henry VIII21, all had their own houses in or near Ay, in order to control their supplies more closely. And so among all the important matters that these great kings had to deal with, having the wine of Ay on their tables cannot have been the least of their worries. (559).
Sutaine, in his Essai sur l'histoire des vins de Champagne, expresses more or less the same views and notes that there still exists an area called "le Léon", probably after its former owner Léon X22. It is possible that there were harvest houses belonging to the sovereigns of the Renaissance, but it is more likely that they contented themselves with employing and lodging their own pourvoyeurs (purveyors) who would then supply them with the vins de Rivière. There is no doubt that from the sixteenth century onwards the vineyards of Ay were producing excellent wines. It is less certain that the term vins d'Ay included other wines of the Rivière region, which would have not only been a great credit to any such wines, but also to their advantage because they would have benefited from Ay's reputation and commercial value, which was substantial at that time.

La recherche en général
En 2004, la recherche fut en France au centre d’une effervescence tant dans son contenu que dans son organisation et son financement.
Le débat sur la place publique a mis en lumière la paupérisation de la recherche (les salaires peu élevés des chercheurs, la faiblesse des investissements, le nombre de postes en chute libre), la lourdeur et le nombre des organismes existants (le carcan des différents statuts des chercheurs, la difficulté des fins de carrières des chercheurs et leur mobilité quasi impossible).
La controverse a plutôt laissé dans l’ombre les priorités de la recherche (quel volume et quelle allocation en termes de chercheurs et d’efforts entre biologie, nanotechnologie, technologie de l’information et de la communication ?), sa qualité (comment évaluer la recherche et les chercheurs ?), sa valorisation (comment mettre en application concrète les recherches fondamentales, appliquées et l’innovation ? quels sont les relais industriels en France ?) et son contenu (que faut-il chercher en 2004 en France, en Europe et dans le monde ? quelles sont les priorités pour la France en particulier ?).
Des forces conservatrices et des intérêts surannés à tous les niveaux empêchent une discussion authentique. La segmentation sur laquelle s’articulent ces débats est en outre périmée (confréries conformistes des physiciens et des biologistes, corporatisme des tutelles). Les discussions sont convenues et biaisées (lobby des organismes puissants de recherche pour conserver leur avantage acquis, combat d’arrière-garde entre Grandes écoles et Universités), si bien qu’il reste peu de place pour un débat serein et objectif.
Dans les années qui viennent, on risque d’assister à un repli de l’Europe qui devra digérer son élargissement aux nouveaux pays, si rien ne change. Malgré tous les efforts en matière de modernisation, l’Europe risque de se marginaliser, incapable, par manque de cohésion, de contrebalancer partiellement l’écrasante domination américaine. L’Europe de la recherche n’est pas facile à bâtir. Les Britanniques privilégient la collaboration avec les États-Unis. La dispersion de l’activité de recherche entre les autres pays européens ne favorise pas l’émergence de synergies.
Les décideurs politiques et les responsables institutionnels de cette renaissance de l’enseignement supérieur et de la recherche devront pourtant redoubler de courage pour provoquer une refonte décapante et définir un nouveau découpage de l’enseignement et de la recherche, adapté au siècle nouveau. Il ne faudrait pas qu’on se contentât de gesticulations pusillanimes, de réaménagements consensuels à l’intérieur de chaque organisme et d’annonces plus médiatiques qu'efficientes.
La science du numérique n’a pas encore acquis une place noble dans le Panthéon scientifique. La science du numérique n’existe même pas en tant que telle. On parle d’informatique et de réseaux ou des sciences et techniques de l’information et de la communication (STIC).
Par ailleurs, des esprits éclairés ne cessent de geindre et de se répandre dans les médias des jugements expéditifs sur ces sujets qu’ils méconnaissent et sous-estiment. Alain Finkielkraut évoque, à propos d’Internet, le fétichisme des technophiles, Claude Allègre minimise l’importance des réseaux : « Internet n’a été à l’origine d’aucune découverte scientifique », la litanie des formules rédhibitoires sur les réseaux, sur Internet ou sur l’informatique, un peu affligeantes par l’étroitesse de leur clairvoyance, ne manquent pas.

Research in General
Research has been a controversial subject in France in 2004, not only because of its content but also because of its organization and funding.
Public arena debate has highlighted the impoverishment of research (the modest salaries of researchers, low investment, and massive reductions in the number of research posts), and the cumbersomeness and number of existing bodies (researchers are often hindered by their status, have difficulties at the end of their careers and an almost total lack of mobility).
The controversy has tended to ignore the priorities of research (the difference in volume and allocation, in terms of research and effort, between such fields as biology, nanotechnology, information technology and communication), its quality (how research or a researcher is evaluated), its use (how is fundamental and applied research, and innovation actually applied, what are the links with industry in France) and its content (what should we be researching in 2004 in France, in Europe and in the world? What are the priories for France?).
Conservative forces and old-world interests at all levels have hindered genuine discussion. Moreover the segmentation on which these debates hinge is out-dated (consisting of conformist brotherhoods of physicists and biologists, and corporate institutions). Discussions are biased and reach foregone conclusions (as a result of the lobbying of powerful research bodies keen to retain their position, and rearguard fighting between technical colleges and Universities), to such an extent that there is little room for calm, objective debate.
If nothing changes then we may witness something of a decline in the years to come as Europe digests its new member countries. Despite all its efforts at modernization Europe risks becoming marginalized, incapable, through lack of cohesion, of even partly counterbalancing America’s overwhelming domination. Research collaboration in Europe is not easily developed. Britain prefers working with America. The dispersion of research activity over the other European countries does not encourage the creation of synergy.
The political decision-makers and institutional officials behind the renaissance of higher education and research must nevertheless redouble their efforts to provoke a drastic overhaul and a restructuring of education and research for the new century. We must not be content with fainthearted gestures, with structures and organizations superficially reinventing themselves, and with measures designed for their media impact rather than for their effectiveness.
Digital science has not yet achieved noble status in the scientific Pantheon. Digital science does not even exist in its own right. Its position is only considered relative to the other “true” sciences (mathematics, physics, astronomy, medicine, the human sciences, etc). We talk of networks and computing, or there are catch-all acronyms like the French “STIC” (Information and Communication Science and Technology).
Furthermore, enlightened minds frequently moan and make summary judgments on these subjects, of which they are not are well-informed and often underestimate. Alain Finkielkraut associates the Internet with technological fetishism, while Claude Allègre plays down the importance of networks, saying that, “the Internet has not been behind a single scientific discovery”. This litany continues: there is no shortage of such damning remarks, which are slightly pathetic in their lack of perceptiveness.

Situé sur les communes de Marssac et de Florentin, à une douzaine de kilomètres d'Albi, le Buc attire le regard par quelques grands arbres dans un vaste parc paysager où se trouvent les bâtiments, allures " fin du XIXème siècle ".
Aménagé sur des bases beaucoup plus anciennes (il fut construit entre 1607 et 1684 par la famille Teissier d'Albi); Le Buc, avec son château 1900, ses communs et son pigeonnier décoré, représente un ensemble assez homogène, où tout était prévu pour que le propriétaire et sa famille puisse vivre avec aisance, voire luxe, dans une autarcie presque complète.
Vendu en 1890, par la famille Teissier à la famille Dussap - Boé, il fut entièrement remanié en 1894 : Construction d'une tour octogonale et d'un second étage, adjonction de grandes terrasses et implantation d'une toiture à forte pente en ardoise, le tout dans le plus pur style " chalet " à la mode en cette fin de siècle.
A ce jour, le Buc est une résidence d'été soigneusement conservée dans son aspect originel. Les aléas de l'entretien des bâtiments et le vieillissement des plantations, ont eu finalement peu d'impact sur la "lisibilité " du domaine.
Les pièces du RDC conservent certaines dispositions du vieux château des Teissier.

Presentation of the Domain
Located in the communes of Marssac and Florentin, twelve kilometres from Albi, one cannot help noticing the large trees in a vast landscaped park that surrounds a group of buildings with a certain late nineteenth century elegance.
The foundations are much older (the original chateau was built between 1607 and 1684 by the Teissier family of Albi). Le Buc, with its nineteenth century chateau, outbuildings and decorative pigeon tower, presents a fairly uniform collection of buildings, where everything was arranged so that the owner and his family could leave in relative comfort, even luxury, and be totally self-sufficient.
Sold in 1890 by the Teissier family to the Dussap-Boé family, it was entirely reorganized in 1894: an octagonal tower and a second floor were built, large terraces were added and a steeply sloping slate roof was put on, everything was reworked in the purer "chalet" style popular at the end of the century.
Le Buc's original appearance as a summer residence has been carefully preserved. Over the years the various maintenance projects and maturing of the park has had little impact on the overall character of the domain.
Some of the features of the old Teissier château are visible in the ground floor rooms.

Background
Having studied physics and philosophy at university I had a restaurant for ten years in London. In 1999 I sold everything and moved to France, between Bordeaux and Toulouse, where I have been living ever since with my partner and seven year old son.
