2.1 Hlstorical background
In steel production the ladle furnace gains increasing consideration. The first ladle furnaces were built in 1965 by ASEA/SKF. These units were based on the refining of the steel via vacuum degassing and were equipped with either electromagnetical or argon stirring facilities. The ladle furnace process on pure slag metallurgy was developped since 1971 by Daido / Japan.
Since 1980 an enormous increase of installations can be observed. Approx. 25 % of the units were built for basic oxygen steel works with ladle sizes between 60 t and 250 t. 75 % of these installations are placed within electric steel mills for tapping weights between 20 t and 150 t of liquid steel.
Whereas the portion of ladle sizes above 100 t amounts to approx. 38 % only, it is observed that the Daido ladle furnace process is increasingly accepted by steel plants with larger tapping weights. This success is related to the good metallurgical results as well as the liability of the process.
2.2 Main features of the ladle furnace process
This process consists of a basic lined ladle. It is covered with a totally water cooled roof. The heating energy is brought to the process via three graphite electrodes. According to the Daido LF-process the graphite electrodes are immersed into a basic slag protecting the refractory of the ladle. Therefore the ladle furnace can be operated with high power factors and thus with long, however, slag protected arcs having high energy yields. During this process the liquid steel is steadily stirred by inert gases, which are supplied through the plugs in the bottom of the ladle.
The four basic functions of the Daido ladle furnace process and the results may be summarized as follows:
- Heating with submerged arcs
- Stirring and rinsing of the steel with inertgas
- Refining under basic and reducing slags
- Inert atmosphere in the ladle furnace
The influence and results of the four single functions are only leading cooperatively to the desired success.
