Soon, special software to automate the scheduling and execution of these many jobs became available. The combination of managing "hardware" and scheduling jobs became known as the "operating system"; the classic example of this type of early operating system was OS/360 by IBM.
The next major development in operating systems was timesharing - the idea that multiple users could use the machine "simultaneously" by keeping all of their programs in memory, executing each user's program for a short time so as to provide the illusion that each user had their own computer. Such a development required the operating system to provide each user's programs with a "virtual machine" such that one user's program could not interfere with another's (by accident or design). The range of devices that operating systems had to manage also expanded; a notable one was hard disks; the idea of individual "files" and a hierarchical structure of "directories" (now often called folders) greatly simplified the use of these devices for permanent storage. Security access controls, allowing computer users access only to files, directories and programs they had permissions to use, were also common.

| Translation - Latvian Jau 20. gadsimta 60. gados datorus plaši un daudzveidīgi lietoja daudzās tautsaimniecības nozarēs, vienā un tajā pašā uzņēmumā – ļoti dažādu darbu veikšanai.
| | Latvian to English: translation of a 1937 law lecture by Konstantins Čakste (fragment) | Source text - Latvian Ir valstis, kur likumi stājas spēkā pakāpeniski, atkarībā no attāluma – piem. agrāk Krievijā, Francijā, u.c. Izdots likums ir spēkā nenoteiktu laiku, ja vien likumā šāds laiks nav paredzēts, ierobežots. Tādēļ katrs likums ir spēkā kamēr to atceļ.
| Translation - English There can be countries where a newly adopted law becomes effective gradually, that is, in function of the distance [from the place of legislating] -- this was the case, e.g., in Russia and France. A law that has been pronounced remains effective infinitely, unless the law provides for a limited time. Thus, every legal act is effective until it is revoked.
Legislating also brings up the question about the chronological effectiveness of a given law. One principle says that a law may not retroact. Rights and responsibilities arise from a legal fact that establishes, changes or terminates a relationship; as concerns effectiveness of a law at a given moment, it should be based on that legal fact. If, on the contrary, the legal fact has occurred in the past, when an older law was effective, then the older law should be applied.

http://blog.ford.com/
http://sellingtobigcompanies.blogs.com/
http://blogs.snapstream.com/

"web" - voratinklis, pasaulinis tinklas [tinklas];
"log" - registras, įrašų visuma [raštas].
Mano pasliūlymas atrodytų taip - "tinklaraštis".

- "What is the translation of blog (a twaddle area)?"
What's up now? Why do you think a blog is a twaddle area? Same as everywhere else, there are people who just wag their tongues; and there are those who write on serious subjects. Let me list a few examples (corporate blogs):
http://blog.ford.com/
http://sellingtobigcompanies.blogs.com/
http://blogs.snapstream.com/
etc.
- "Blogs are artefacts that belong to a fashion (and therefore, are transient) or to a subculture (and therefore, are part of a particular lingo) just like dreadlocks, punk movement, postmodernism, funky style, jazz..."
I can hardly agree with you and I think that blogging will continue long into the future. Here are just a few — of the many — possible ways of using the service:
- personal diary,
- corporate news bulletin,
- technology reviews,
- reviews of various events,
- political commentary,
- fan clubs
and so on and so forth.
- "Thus, there is a corresponding ordinary term in Lithuanian: "Interneto dienoraščiai" ("Internet diaries"), or even more directly: "diaries". And that is how they have been referred to until now on some of the Lithuanian websites (Bitė plius; the "takeliai" section of Takas.lt; etc.)."
Exactly! That's why we chose the same word as the name of our new project: dienorasciai.lt.

[..]
I've been using to this day a compound term: "interneto dienoraščiai" ("internet diaries"). That's precise enough and yet awfully long-winded.
In fact, "blog" is nothing else than a compound made from "web" and "log". The shortened form is favoured most likely because "weblog" and "the blog" sound very similar in English. In Lithuanian it will not be possible to keep a similar play on words, therefore I'd propose to forget about the letter "b" and create a neologism by sticking as much as possible to an exact mechanism of translating:
"web" - voratinklis ("spider web"), pasaulinis tinklas ("global network") [tinklas] (network; the web);
"log" - registras ("registry", "journal"), įrašų visuma ("collection of records") [raštas] (article; writings; works; handwriting).
Hence, I would come up with "tinklaraštis" (webwritings).
| | German to Latvian: linguistics, literary analysis, sociology and politics.

My main specialisation is business and technical documents, many of which are published and read (or used in other ways) by humans: press releases, websites, project papers, agreements, etc. These require more than just acceptable translation but also creativity, understanding the target audience, mastery of idiomatic language and, obviously, full factual adherence to the original writer's intent.
I am native speaker of Latvian, highly proficient in English and deal with most of my working languages professionally since 1995. I translate and localise from French and English into Latvian.
In the recent years I have most frequently been assigned translation tasks in these industrial, commercial and service fields:
> Technology: computers, peripherals, software interfaces, telephones
> User manuals: household and kitchen equipment, consumer electronics
> Art, culture, history and society: news articles, interviews, essays, media releases
> Personal documents and correspondence
> Medicine, medical equipment and pharmaceuticals
> Transportation; urban development; machinery
> other persuasive, legal and narrative topics.
I possess considerable experience in editing, proofreading and backtranslation. It is equally enjoyable for me to write or review a literary text or to work in a technical setting with localisers or terminologists. My experience includes journalism, editorial work, copywriting, public relations and occasionally teaching Latvian as a foreign language.
I am especially well-practiced with computers: since 1987 I have learned and worked in various platforms, operating systems and applications.
In 1995-1998, I studied translation and English at the University of Latvia, where I even took simultaneous interpreting classes in order to test my fluency.
You are welcome to order translations of both short texts and larger ongoing projects, such as websites or software localisation. My website reflects my experience as Latvian translator working with English and French (traducteur letton) and with localisation.

More about my background I participated in the creation and approval of new technical terms in the Latvian language, while acting as a member of the Information Technology Terminology Subcommittee of the Latvian Academy of Sciences from 2000 to 2008. I am accredited as a contributor to the newest Latvian Information Technology dictionary (printed in 2001).
Alongside the translation work, I have written several dozen articles about information technology, modern communications, corporate culture and the Internet - for specialised press, national dailies and business magazines.
It is simply logical that I have become a technical linguist: I have been enthusiastic about languages since young age.
