An analytic, prospective, observational, multicenter study was performed in 23 participating hospitals within the Spanish health care system. Three (3) age cohorts were defined among the patients (preschoolers aged 1 to 3 years; school-aged children between 4 and 7 years; and older children aged 8 to 12 years). The informed consent of legal guardians was required in order to recruit patients. Children had to be between the ages of 1 and 12 years and in the ASA I-II classes. Patients who were allergic to an anesthetic or analgesic drug (non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug [NSAID] or related drugs) were excluded, as well as patients with any type of liver, heart, lung or kidney disease. They had to be undergoing surgery lasting between 30 and 120 minutes, and undertaking a preoperative fast of 6 hours for solid foods and 2 hours for clear liquids.
The following parameters were monitored: non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP), heart rate (HR), pulse oximetry (SpO2), breathing frequency and temperature. These values were recorded upon arrival to the operating room, after premedication, after induction, every 5 min during the procedure, before extubation, 5 min after extubation, and every 15 min afterwards up to a maximum of 60 min. In addition to the above parameters, end-tidal concentrations of sevoflurane and remifentanil dosages were recorded during anesthetic administration.
