Changing the lives of women
Women have been subjected to social inequality and ethnic conflicts in Sri Lanka for a long time. The effects of the tsunami have confounded the conflict and the gender disparity leaving the women in the community incredibly vulnerable to abuse.
This project seeks to empower women and combat discrimination against women by:
Creating more opportunities for women to earn money and restoring livelihoods for female-headed households, through activities such as handicraft, gardening, poultry farming and boutique shops
Increasing awareness around women’s rights
Increasing awareness on health, HIV and AIDS
Increasing the level of local community based women’s groups to combat discrimination
Building links and relationships between Tamils and Muslims
Training sessions to impart new vocational skills
Lobbying other organisations to give consideration to women’s issues in their work.

Working across the board: East Sri Lanka
The shock of the tsunami and its effects on infrastructure, agricultural land, livestock, properties and the sheer loss of life has left a wake of trauma. This project seeks to support and serve over 220,000 families along the East coast in a systematic manner to safeguard against future mental depression and social issues.
The project focuses on the relief gap provisions and rehabilitation activities, supporting basic needs, psychosocial care, capacity building, livelihood, governance and coordination activities to meet the needs of affected families in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka.
The project gives priority to the disaster affected people with special emphasis on widows, women, school children, orphans, elders, people with disabilities, large families and families affected by the war.
Community Care Workers provide psychosocial care, data collection, needs assessment, facilitating, implementing work plans, capacity building for individuals and community based organisations, coordination of activities, leadership skills and time management.
The project encourages an integrated response for addressing people’s needs from psychosocial care to immediate and long-term needs restructuring. Programme intervention is carried out through existing committees, co-existence committees, youth committees and women’s self-help groups without any discrimination of caste, creed, religion or ethnicity.
XXXXX’s project partners are the ‘ZZZZZ’ and the project has been running since December 2004
Family well-being: Tangalle
The government decided to halt and prohibit new constructions within 100 metres area from the seashore. This means that the fishing communities in areas like Tangalle in Southern Sri Lanka have lost their homes and their livelihoods.
This project is working with over 400 families to provide:
Immediate assistance to the most vulnerable and marginalised
Tents, kitchen equipment, mosquito nets and coils, sanitary towels, shoes for small children, uniforms and text books for children, temporary toilets in camps and food
School resources, seminars and tutorials, especially for those students about to sit their junior and senior level examinations
A supplementary allowance for widows
Carrying out a psycho-social care programme
Formulating and implementing a mid term and a long term relief and rehabilitation programme to restore the livelihoods of affected families
Improving basic living standards
Ensuring that all affected school children return to school.
XXXXX project partner is the ‘WWWWW’ and the project has been running since 01 June 2005.

Cambiar la vida de las mujeres
Desde hace mucho tiempo, las mujeres de Sri Lanka están sometidas a la injusticia social y a los conflictos étnicos. Los efectos del tsunami han multiplicado los conflictos y la disparidad de género, por lo que la actual vulnerabilidad de las mujeres de la comunidad ante los abusos es aún mayor.
La finalidad de este proyecto es empoderar a la mujer y combatir su discriminación mediante las actividades siguientes:
Crear más oportunidades para que las mujeres puedan obtener ingresos, así como restaurar los medios de vida de las mujeres que son cabeza de familia, mediante actividades tales como la artesanía, la horticultura, la cría avícola y el pequeño comercio

Incrementar los conocimientos sobre salud, VIH y SIDA
Fomentar los grupos comunitarios locales de mujeres para combatir la discriminación

Realizar campañas para que los problemas de la mujer sean valorados en el trabajo de otras organizaciones.

Trabajo integral: Sri Lanka Oriental
El impacto del tsunami y sus efectos sobre infraestructuras, tierras de cultivo, ganado y propiedades inmuebles, así como la pérdida de vidas en sí, han dejado un rastro traumático. Este proyecto busca apoyar y servir de manera sistemática a más de 220.000 familias a lo largo de la costa oriental, para salvaguardarlas contra futuras depresiones psicológicas y problemas sociales.
Para atender las necesidades de las familias afectadas en la Provincia Oriental de Sri Lanka, el proyecto se centra en actividades que salven la brecha existente en la provisión de acción humanitaria y de rehabilitación, mediante el apoyo a actividades orientadas a las necesidades básicas, la atención psicosocial, el desarrollo de la capacitación y de los medios de vida, el buen gobierno y la coordinación.
El proyecto da prioridad a las personas afectadas por el desastre, con especial atención a viudas, mujeres, infancia en edad escolar, niñas y niños huérfanos, mayores y personas con discapacidades, así como a las familias numerosas y las afectadas por la guerra.
El personal de atención comunitaria trabaja en atención psicosocial, recolección de datos, evaluación de necesidades, facilitación, implementación de planes de trabajo, desarrollo de la capacitación individual y de las organizaciones comunitarias, coordinación de actividades, habilidades de liderazgo y gestión del tiempo.
Para hacer frente a las necesidades de las personas, el proyecto fomenta una respuesta integral, que va desde la atención psicosocial hasta la reestructuración de las necesidades tanto inmediatas como las del largo plazo. Las intervenciones del programa se realizan a través de comités de convivencia y de juventud y grupos de autoayuda de la mujer ya existentes, sin discriminación alguna por razones de casta, creencias, religiosos o étnicos.

Bienestar familiar: Tangalle
El gobierno decidió detener la construcción y prohibir toda nueva edificación a menos de cien metros de la costa. Por ello, las comunidades pesqueras en zonas como la de Tangalle, al sur de Sri Lanka, han perdido sus casas y sus medios de vida.
Este proyecto trabaja con más de 400 familias para ofrecer:
Ayuda inmediata a las personas más vulnerables y marginadas
Tiendas de campaña, utensilios de cocina, mosquiteras y espirales contra los mosquitos, compresas, zapatos para niñas y niños de corta edad y uniformes y libros escolares para la infancia, así como alimentos y aseos provisionales para los campamentos
