GDP Growth of 9.5% for 2004
China’s National Bureau of Statistics announced that
China’s economy grew at a rate of 9.5% during 2004, up
from the official number of 9.3% for 2003. Inflation hit a
peak of 5.3% in July and August. Consumer prices also
rose during 2004, up 3.9% over 2003, with urban prices
up 3.3% and rural prices up 4.8%. Food and fuel accounted
for the highest increases, with food prices increasing by
9.9% and fuel increasing by 11.4% over 2003. A report
released by the China Economic Monitoring Centre predicts
that GDP growth will be at 8% for 2005. (China Daily)

China Daily has reported that Finance Minister Jin Renqing,
along with representatives of other emerging economies,
will attend a meeting of the G7 finance ministers in London
in early February. At a business forum in Beijing on January
26, Ministry of Finance International Department Head Zhu
Guangyao indicated that although China will be open to
discussing the Renminbi exchange rate at the meeting, he
was also quoted as saying that “[f]or any country, the
exchange rate issue should be decided by the sovereign
state.” China Daily also stated that Zhu said “an appreciation
of the Renminbi would involve a major change in China’s
international monetary policy” and that “China needs to
maintain currency stability at the moment”. Speculation
over whether China will revalue the Renminbi has been
rampant of late.

La Dirección Nacional de Estadísticas de China anunció que la economía china creció el 9,5% durante 2004, comparada con la cifra oficial de 9,3% registrada en 2003. Durante julio y agosto, la inflación alcanzó su punto crítico de 5,3%. Los precios al consumidor también aumentaron durante 2004; en 2003 subieron hasta un 3,9%; los precios urbanos, hasta un 3,3% y los precios agrarios, hasta un 4,8%. Los alimentos y el combustible fueron los productos que alcanzaron los incrementos más importantes, ya que los precios de los productos alimenticios aumentaron un 9,9% y el combustible se incrementó el 11,4% durante 2003. El Centro de Monitoreo Económico de China difundió un informe que pronostica un crecimiento del PBI del 8% para 2005 (China Daily).
