Non avevo letto nulla sui grandi esploratori artici…
Non conosco il motivo, ma un giorno cominciai a pensare al Nord e a programmare alcuni viaggi in un crescendo di latitudine: Norvegia, Faröer, Islanda, Groenlandia.
La Groenlandia diventò cosí il mio obiettivo ultimo, il piú desiderato; poi, consultato l’atlante mi accorsi che non sarebbe stata un’ascesa verso il Polo, ma semplicemente un girovagare intorno al Circolo Polare Artico.
… E viaggio su viaggio aumentarono le mie aspettative.
A 8°C un sole velato mi da il benvenuto il 13 agosto 2003, e mi immergo subito nel paesaggio: case colorate sparse disordinatamente, 4500 cani groenlandesi che latrano ininterrottamente nel fango, salmoni e halibut appesi ad essiccare, slitte ammonticchiate, scricchiolii sinistri del ghiaccio, iceberg a riva, iceberg al largo, iceberg all’orizzonte… la sensazione del caos.
Cosí mi accoglie Ilulissat, questa è la prima visione della Groenlandia: ed era il mio immaginario, un buon inizio per farsi trasportare e cullare da emozioni poi sempre piú intense e avvicinarsi ad un paese duro ed essenziale.
Nascono i contatti con i locali, gli scambi che aumentano la conoscenza del paese e della loro vita di contrasti, cosí legata al passato e ad un clima, tanto
limitante per noi, quanto essenza di vita per loro.
Trekking, voli in elicottero, spostamenti in barca, mi rendono con le immagini termini inusuali come permafrost, inlandsis, nunatak, iskappe, sermeq…
Verifico come in un paese che si estende da 60° a oltre 80° di latitudine Nord, gli insediamenti e la vita siano solo lungo la costa, e lo sguardo degli esquimesi sia sempre rivolto al mare e mai alle montagne, cosí particolari e affascinanti.
Il mare che con la sua ricchezza, porta un beneficio immenso ai pescatori.
“Terra verde” fu la definizione di Erik il Rosso per questa enorme isola, “Terra di desolazione” fu un altro appellativo altrettanto immeritato, è semplicemente una terra difficile, che con le sue lunghe giornate estive alimenta il ciclo della vita.
Ho provato a farmi “avvolgere” dal paese: la noia della pioggia, il vento, lo spazio, la solitudine, il tepore di una tersa giornata in cima ad una montagna, la luce morbida e radente, il ghiaccio sempre presente e sempre diverso, la dolcezza delle persone… e qualcosa di indefinibile si è insinuato in me.
Ora capisco coloro che dopo un viaggio in Groenlandia vi tornano ripetutamente.

Paradiso a Nord

Il kayak scivolava lento e sinuoso tra il ghiaccio oramai disperso in una miriade di frammenti, mentre nel proscenio di un mare tranquillo si stagliava un gigantesco iceberg.
Niels, un omino di mezza età, con un berretto di lana blu a coste da cui spuntavano dei lunghi ciuffi grigi, con due occhi un po’ a mandorla e dei baffetti appena visibili su un volto reso scuro e segnato dal tempo, si recava a caccia.
Era tutto quello che sapeva fare.
Lo vidi allontanarsi e dirigersi verso l’iceberg, spostandosi a zig zag e superando con abilità i freddi ostacoli che minacciosi sembravano intimargli: fermati!
Illusi, chi può fermare un Inuit a caccia? Nessuno, che io sappia.
Lo avrei aspettato a riva, se riva si può chiamare una enorme lastra di ghiaccio.
Ogni mondo è paese e quindi non c’è da stupirsi se a queste latitudini invece della comune sabbia vi sia del comune ghiaccio.
Provate ora, per un istante, a chiudere gli occhi e immaginate alle vostre spalle un’alta e lunga lingua di ghiaccio che da una vallata scende verso il mare. Nell’acqua ferma come uno specchio, si riflette un cielo terso ed un grande iceberg dalla cima frastagliata. Attorno una miriade di piccoli pezzi bianchi galleggianti, che immobili, in una luce diffusa aspettano di sciogliersi. In lontananza, una terra verde sormontata da guglie irte e inviolate, chiude l’orizzonte del fiordo.
Pensate meriti la pena arrivarci e starci per un po’?
Bene, ero su una lastra di ghiaccio ad aspettare Niels e il panorama, come vi ho descritto, era da mozzafiato.
Ero arrivato pochi giorni prima da Losanna lasciando un clima quasi torrido con temperature superiori ai 35 gradi che in tutta la Svizzera come in tutta Europa, negli ultimi anni mai si erano verificate.
Ora stavo decisamente al freddo, come dalle nostre parti in alta montagna. Era luglio inoltrato.
Riflettevo, nell’attesa, sul fatto che l’isola su cui mi trovavo, fosse la piú grande della Terra e fosse anche la piú inospitale.
Inoltre, era stata battezzata “Terra verde”, un nome che con tutto quel ghiaccio intorno facevo fatica a capire.
Ero in Groenlandia.
Avevo letto che il primo ad approdarvi, sulla costa orientale nel 900, fu un islandese, un certo Gunnbjørn che ritornando dalla Norvegia a causa di una tempesta perse la rotta e venne spinto da forti venti verso una nuova terra, oltre l’Islanda. A dargli il benvenuto fu un enorme ghiacciaio, quello dello Inolfsjeld, che dai suoi 1900 metri d’altezza si propagava sino al mare ricoprendo come una malefica mano bianca, valli e coste.
Al povero Gunnbjørn non rimase altro che prendere atto dell’impossibilità di condurvi una seppur strenue forma di vita e fece quindi ritorno in patria, lasciando ai posteri il proprio nome a denominare quelle coste cosí impervie e inospitali.
Un altro temerario, un norvegese, verso la fine di quel secolo vi approdò e fu lui a battezzarla con quel nome cosí inconsueto.
Erik il Rosso insieme al padre Thorvald, alla moglie Thjodhild, al figlioletto Leif e a pochi altri, esiliati prima dalla Norvegia e in seguito dall’Islanda per sanguinosi conflitti con i loro confinanti si misero in mare alla ricerca di nuove terre.
Sapevano di una terra ad Ovest dell’Islanda e chissà, forse aiutati dal bel tempo e da una temperatura meno rigida del solito, vi giunsero in soli quattro giorni di navigazione, ma trovandovi solo rocce e ghiaccio fecero vela verso Sud doppiando l’odierno Capo Farewell.
Risalendo quindi una corrente calda si spinsero a Nord dove videro dei fiordi verdissimi simili a quelli della loro terra natia e in uno di quelli vi si insediarono fondando, presso l’attuale Julianehåb, la prima colonia vikinga in Groenlandia.
Nelle saghe, con un po’ di malizia è scritto che il nome dato da Erik fosse cosí allettante per convincere altri residenti in Islanda a trasferirvisi, come poi storicamente avvenne. Al giorno d’oggi si direbbe una perfetta operazione di marketing.
Vi fondarono un’altra colonia posta piú a Nord e gli insediamenti vikinghi vi rimasero per quattro secoli, poi per cause, si presume climatiche, scomparvero lasciando il terreno ad un altro popolo che da sempre ma, nelle regioni settentrionali, vi stanziava: gli Inuit.
Uno sparo ruppe il silenzio del fiordo. Uno solo. Sapevo che Niels era un buon tiratore, e sapevo anche che il fucile a differenza di arco e frecce non dava un’altra chance. O si prendeva la preda al primo colpo o addio mangiare.
Su degli scogli alla mia destra erano arrivati alcuni amici di Niels.
Aspettavano anche loro l’arrivo del compagno e nell’attesa intonarono un katajjak, un canto che presumo fosse di buon auspicio per la caccia.
Un canto antico tramandato da chissà quante generazioni con timbri profondi e gutturali che si propagavano nell’aria tersa, disperdendosi al cambiamento del tono, per poi riprendere forza e di nuovo ripetersi.
Mi presero piccoli brividi di emozione.
Mi spostai raggiungendoli e dopo una mezzora ecco arrivare Niels.
Esultarono tutti alla vista della foca ormai esamine e arpionata a lato del kayak.
Non sto a raccontarvi quello che fecero al povero animale perché, da noi certe scene fanno stringere il cuore; vi dirò però che uomini e cani da queste parti sono sopravvissuti evitando l’estinzione e lo scorbuto grazie al fegato di foca che trangugiato crudo forniva loro una buona dose di vitamina C.
Un nugolo di perfide zanzare che a quelle latitudini mai piú avrei pensato di trovare, prese a perseguitarci, fastidiose e ostinate. Era comico vederci saltare ora uno ora l’altro con una mano sempre in aria a cercare di scacciarle e l’altra ahimè a grattarci.
Avevano ragione gli Angakok, gli sciamani, ad affermare che freddo e zanzare erano le calamità di quelle zone artiche.
Niels mi si avvicinò sorridendo — la prossima volta ti porti un buon antizanzara! —
— Ok — risposi — ci puoi contare — e ci incamminammo verso il porticciolo che sulla sinistra oltre la lingua di ghiaccio un po’ nascosto da un piccolo promontorio, dava dimora a piccole barche in legno. Piú su sparse qua e là delle casette colorate donavano al paesaggio un’atmosfera da fiaba. Alcune erano poste sulla sommità di uno sperone roccioso e una serpentina di scale le collegava al pianoro antistante il porto, altre fiancheggiavano un sentiero che generoso le univa. Tutte poggiavano su un piccolo rialzo, in legno o in cemento, quasi come palafitte e dall’unica porta d’ingresso si dipartiva una scaletta mentre, ai lati, la biancheria svolazzava appesa a fili invisibili.
Refoli d’aria si alzarono improvvisi e in pochi minuti nubi basse chiusero alla vista lo scenario del fiordo e una sferzante pioggia mista a neve prese a cadere.
Non durò molto. Le nubi si allontanarono e l’iceberg lentamente riapparve.
Bagnati fradici ci dirigemmo verso casa e già sentivamo il latrare dei cani.
Appena giunti, un gruppetto di bimbi ci circondò festoso, mentre Niels porgeva ai cani, legati con robuste corde, la loro razione di foca.
Subito si quietarono ponendo cosí fine alle brevi zuffe per la divisione del cibo. Era normale per loro stare giorni e giorni senza mangiare e questo non per cattiveria umana, ma solo per renderli piú resistenti alla fame quando in inverno erano fuori a caccia. Per loro, quella poca carne di foca, sarebbe stata sufficiente per altri tre o quattro giorni.
Che bimbi graziosi! Che gioia vederli giocare con niente.
Si erano seduti formando un cerchio e tracciavano dei segni per terra. Forse era un loro rito di ringraziamento per la foca appena presa o solo un gioco. Senza tanti ninnoli. A guardarli, solo con un maglioncino e delle brachette striminzite mi veniva ancora piú freddo. Eppure non davano nessun segno di patimento. Erano tutti paffutelli.
Improvvisamente con un forte vociare si alzarono e correndo si diressero a perdifiato verso il porticciolo lasciando all’aria il compito di disperdere le loro voci e i loro strilli.
Ad attenderci dentro casa c’era Leena.
Niels l’aveva conosciuta su al Nord durante una lunga uscita invernale. Aveva si e no una trentina d’anni. Il viso rotondetto e grazioso lasciava trasparire un animo buono e gentile mentre un corpo in carne la rendeva piacente o come diremmo noi dalle nostre parti, interessante.
Era in cucina alle prese con uno stufato di bue muschiato il cui odore forte e invitante avvolgeva l’intera casa. E la fame non mancava di certo anche a noi!
Rifocillati e davanti a un gran boccale di birra ascoltavo Niels.
Mi raccontava di come Kalaallit Nunaat, cosi viene chiamata la Groenlandia nel loro idioma inuit che significa Terra Bianca, fosse solo apparentemente un’isola. In realtà nel periodo invernale quando il mare diventa ghiaccio e la terra è sommersa da una spessa coltre di neve, tutto l’artico diventa un gran continente e chi volesse sbizzarrirsi potrebbe partire con slitta e cani da Uummannaq, posta sulla costa Ovest dell’isola, ed arrivare fino a Capo Morris Jesup che è la punta Nord per poi passare all’isola di Ellesmere e proseguire in Canada fino ad arrivare in Alaska e poi spingersi fino in Siberia, stando via anche decine d’anni, ad affrontare bufere di neve che durano settimane e a percorrere un deserto bianco infinito, senza strade, sostentandosi di sole foche e di qualche caribú.
Niels affermava che per loro il tempo è un fatto relativo, non hanno nessun treno da prendere né nessun parente ad attenderli, vivono alla giornata e il domani è sempre un mistero.
A guidarli c’e solo l’Angakok, lo sciamano, che fa da tramite con gli spiriti che loro chiamano tupilaqs.
Non hanno un capo. Non sono un popolo belligerante, non si spingono alla conquista di nuove terre. Sono ospitali, cordiali e principalmente pacifici. Il fatto di vivere continuamente quasi al limite della sopravvivenza, ne ha intenerito gli animi e per loro la felicità è quella di vivere giorno per giorno, senza pretese.
È la contentezza di vivere che traspira dai loro pori.
Il nome Inuit corrisponde nel loro linguaggio a Uomini e questo la dice lunga su quanto loro si considerino solo ed esclusivamente delle persone.
Ero affascinato da come Niels e Leena fossero gentili nel darmi indicazioni su un percorso che avrei dovuto intraprendere nei prossimi giorni e mi gongolavo a sentirli ricordare con un po’ di nostalgia, di quando erano piccoli e seguivano i loro genitori negli spostamenti invernali e di come avessero imparato ad orientarsi guardando il manto celeste, un libro aperto che tutti dovrebbero conoscere, dove le aurore boreali creavano degli immensi bagliori nelle notti fredde e buie.
— Vedi Simon — disse Niels — la nostra vita sta cambiando. Sono arrivate le motoslitte ed hanno sostituito i cani, sono arrivati i generatori e abbiamo la corrente elettrica, arriva di tutto dalla Danimarca, ma io rimango malinconico e penso ai miei cani con cui dovrò andare a caccia appena il ghiaccio sovrasterà tutto e la neve coprirà anche le case. Cosa ne sarà di me, dei miei figli, e della mia gente? Un Inuit non diventerà mai un danese, non saprebbe che farsene delle loro comodità. Noi qui siamo e rimaniamo Inuit e la nostra vita è regolata e basata su semplici cose, vecchie di millenni e la caccia è una di quelle. Una volta c’erano renne, caribú, buoi muschiati, lepri e orsi in abbondanza. In mare non v’erano altro che foche narvali e balenottere. Ora a sostentarci c’è solo qualche foca. —
Il suo viso si era rattristato e per consolarlo gli dissi che era stato fondato l’Artic Council a qui partecipavano oltre alla Danimarca anche Canada, Stati Uniti, Russia, Finlandia, Islanda, Norvegia e Svezia a difesa della popolazione inuit e delle specie animali.
Tutta burocrazia — borbottò alzandosi — Vieni, andiamo a goderci una fantastica notte artica.
I cani, ora tranquilli, sonnecchiavano e tutt’intorno regnava un silenzio infinito.
L’aria tersa e una luce crepuscolare mettevano in risalto il biancore del ghiacciaio che scivolava nel fiordo. La sagoma splendente del grande iceberg sembrava riflettere una luce propria che dall’interno si espandeva ai bordi illuminando tutta l’acqua intorno. Che spettacolo! Ed era mezzanotte.
Avevo conosciuto Niels e Leena due anni prima durante una mia visita al loro piccolo villaggio. Ne era nata un’amicizia sincera ed ero felice di passare con loro qualche giorno, prima di rientrare a Ilulissat e poi a Nuuk.
Rientrammo e nel prender sonno pensavo che ero veramente su un’isola misteriosa.
Solo agli inizi del ’900 grazie all’esploratore americano Robert Edwin Peary venne concluso il periplo dell’isola mentre solo negli anni trenta il geofisico tedesco Alfred Wegener riuscí a penetrare nell’interno e a installare una piccola stazione posta a tremila metri di altezza standovi qualche mese e poi al suo ritorno perdendovi la vita.
Avevo letto di Knud Rasmussen che compí una spedizione alla fine dell’’800 visitando i villaggi posti sulla costa Nord-occidentale fondandovi quella che in seguito sarebbe diventata la grande base americana di Thule. Ha avuto il merito di portare alla nostra conoscenza la storia e la vita del popolo Inuit.
Isola misteriosa, pensavo, dove un oceano furioso e freddo dalle acque nere e profonde bagna le sue coste insinuandosi nelle sue altrettanto profonde insenature, per poi trasformarsi oltre il 70° parallelo in ghiaccio perenne e unirsi cosí all’immensa cupola bianca che sovrasta l’isola, l’Inlandsis e generando figli, gli iceberg, che fluttuando sulle sue acque li porta tra i fiordi e poi verso Sud.
Iceberg, o piú verosimilmente montagne di solida acqua che pazientemente si abbandonano alla carezza di una corrente calda, lasciandosi sferzare da venti che lentamente li modellano e altrettanto lentamente li sciolgono. Temuti dagli uomini e paragonati a invisibili armi che affiorano tra nebbie intense e mari tempestosi sono sempre stati considerati immaginarie terre di approdo ambulanti dove agli uomini è sconsigliato recarvisi mentre uccelli e foche vi riposano nella spola tra l’uno e l’altro.
Nel breve viaggio a bordo della nave che da Ilulissat mi portava a Uummannaq, essi formavano una lunga catena bianca da cui, al nostro passaggio, si alzavano in volo una moltitudine di uccelli marini, bianchi anche loro.
Iceberg che arrivavano lenti e maestosi dai grandi ghiacciai del Nord, da quella immensa cupola alta al suo centro piú di tremila metri e ai suoi bordi quasi mille, che d’inverno, come una mano bianca estesa quasi due milioni di chilometri quadrati si allunga con le sue dita verso il mare, formando delle lunghe lingue da cui al giungere dell’estate essi si staccano.
È con la loro immagine che prendo sonno e al mattino con le prime luci dell’alba è d’istinto che mi spingo alla finestra per guardare in lontananza verso il fiordo, a sincerarmi che il grande iceberg, ora pennellato da una luce rosata, sia ancora lí ad aspettarmi e a riempire il mio cuore di felicità.
Questa è la Groenlandia, questo è il Paradiso a Nord.

I had never read anything about the great explorers of the Arctic...
I don’t know why, but one day I began thinking about the north and to plan some trips towards ever-increasing latitudes: Norway, the Faeroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland.
So Greenland became my final and ultimate objective; then, having consulted the atlas I realised that it would not be an ascent towards the Pole at all, but merely a wandering around the Arctic Circle.
… And trip by trip, my expectations increased.
At 8°C, a hazy sun welcomed me on August 13, 2003, and I presently plunged into a landscape of colourful houses scattered here and there, salmon and halibut hung to dry, heaps of sleds, icebergs along the shore, icebergs at sea, and icebergs on the horizon, all accompanied by the barking of 4500 Greenlandic dogs in the mud and the eerie sound of ice creaking…a general sensation of chaos.
Thus was my welcome to Ilulissat, my first impression of Greenland: and it was how I had imagined it. I was now ready to let myself be carried away by the increasingly intense emotions that would reveal to me the quintessence of this rugged and unmitigated country.
Contacts with locals were born, exchanges that increased my knowledge of their country and the many contradictions of their lives - so closely linked to the past and to a climate that is as jading for us as it is fortifying for them. Hiking, helicopter flights, and boat trips presented unusual terms like permafrost, inlandsis, nunatak, iskappe, sermeq…
I was able to verify how, in a country that stretches from 60° to more than 80° latitude north, settlements and life exist only along the coast, and that the Eskimos always look seaward and never towards the mountains, in spite of their majestic allure.
It is the bounty of the sea grants that these fishermen their livelihood.
“Green Land” was the definition of Erik the Red for this enormous island, while “Land of Desolation” was another equally undeserved name. It is merely an austere land that propagates the circle of life with its long summer days.
I decided to abandon myself to this land: to the monotony of the rain, to the wind, to the spaces, to the solitude, to the warmth of a crispy clear day on a mountain summit, to the gentle and oblique sunlight, to the ice that is always present yet ever-changing, to the graciousness of the people....and something indescribable possessed me.
Now I understand those who, after a trip to Greenland, go back again and again.

Northern Paradise

The kayak navigated slowly amidst the ice that had dissolved into a multitude of fragments, while a gigantic iceberg dominated the forestage of the glassy sea.
Niels, a small middle-aged man with somewhat almond-shaped eyes peering out from under the ribbed, blue, woollen cap pulled down over his long grey locks and a moustache that could barely be seen on his tanned and time-worn face, was going hunting.
It was all he knew how to do.
I saw him head out towards the iceberg, nimbly dodging the menacing icy obstacles that seemed to bid him: stop!
What fools! Who can stop an Inuit out to hunt? No one that I know of.
I was to wait for him on the shore - if an enormous sheet of ice can be called a shore.
It is truly a very small world, so it shouldn’t surprise us if ice covers the shore at this latitude instead of common sand.
Now try, just for an instant, to close your eyes and imagine a high and long wedge of ice behind you, reaching down from a valley towards the sea. The waters as smooth as a mirror reflect a clear sky and a huge iceberg with its jagged tip, surrounded by a host of small white pieces floating peacefully in a diffused light, just waiting to melt. In the distance, spiky, pristine peaks tower over green land, closing the horizon of the fjord.
Might it be worth stopping and visiting for a while?
So, I was on a sheet of ice waiting for Niels and the panorama, as I have described, was breathtaking.
I had arrived a few days before from Lausanne, leaving behind a somewhat torrid climate with temperatures of more than 35 degrees that, in Switzerland and throughout Europe, had been unprecedented over recent years.
Now it was definitely cold where I was, like in the high mountains. It was late July.
While waiting, I was thinking about the fact that the island I stood on was the largest on Earth and also the most inhospitable.
Moreover, it had been christened “Green land” - an unfathomable name, given all the ice that surrounded me.
I was in Greenland.
I had read that the first to land here, on the eastern coast in 900, was an Icelander named Gunnbjørn. He had run into a storm on his way back from Norway and was pushed off course by strong winds towards a new land, beyond Iceland. Standing to welcome him was an enormous glacier known as Inolfsjeld, towering 1900 metres high and reaching down into the sea like a sinister white hand grasping at the valleys and coastlines.
Poor Gunnbjørn had no choice but to note the impossibility of leading even a Spartan lifestyle here, making his way homeward and leaving posterity with his own name for such impervious and inhospitable shores.
Towards the end of the same century, another fearless explorer, a Norwegian, landed here and christened this land with such an unsuitable name.
Erik the Red, together with his father Thorvald, his wife Thjodhild, young son Leif, and few others, exiled first from Norway and later from Iceland due to the bloody conflicts with their neighbours, set out to sea in search of new lands.
They knew of a land west of Iceland and - who knows? – perhaps sustained by good weather and a warmer than average temperature, reached the island after just four days of sailing. Finding only rocks and ice, they sailed once again, this time southward to round what is today Cape Farewell.
Then a warm current pushed them northward where they caught sight of lush fjords similar to those of their homeland. They chose to settle in one of them near what is known today as Julianehåb, thereby establishing the first Viking colony in Greenland.
In these sagas, with a trace of malice, it is written that the name given by Erik was intended as a ruse to lure other Icelanders to move there, as eventually happened. Today it would be considered a brilliant marketing operation.
Another colony was settled more northward and the Viking settlements remained there for four centuries. Then, for what is believed to be climatic reasons, they disappeared, leaving the land to another people who had long settled in northern regions: the Inuit.
One shot shattered the silence of the fjord. Just one. I knew that Niels was an expert marksman, and I knew that a rifle, in contrast to a bow and arrow, did not allow a second chance. Either the hunter hit the mark at the first attempt, or they would go hungry.
Glancing towards the rocks to my right I could see that some of Niels' friends had arrived.
They were also awaiting the arrival of their companion and, to pass the time, had begun singing a katajjak, a song that I assumed brought luck to the hunt.
An age-old song passed down from countless generations, distinguished by deep and guttural timbres that set the still air to vibrating, fading at each change of tone, and then regaining the force to repeat itself.
I trembled with emotion.
I moved to join them and, about a half and hour later, Niels arrived.
They exulted at the sight of the dead seal lashed to the side of the kayak.
I won’t go into details about what they did to that poor animal, as we are certainly not used to such scenes; it will suffice to say that men and dogs in these parts have survived and avoided extinction and scurvy thanks to the seal liver that they swallow raw for a healthy dose of vitamin C.
A swarm of loathsome mosquitoes, that one would never expect to find at such latitudes, took to harassing us, obstinate and annoying. It was amusing to see us jolt - now one, then another – trying to chase them off by waving one hand in the air and using the other – alas! – to scratch.
The Angakok, the shamans, were right in saying that the cold and the mosquitoes were the natural calamities of these Arctic zones.
Niels approached me smiling, “The next time you’ll have to bring a good mosquito repellent!” —
“Ok,” I answered, “you bet,” and we walked towards the marina that, on the left beyond the tongue of ice was slightly hidden by a small promontory, a harbour to the small wooden vessels anchored there. Further up, small colourful houses dotted the landscape, lending a fairy tale-like atmosphere. Some were perched on top of a rocky spur and joined by a sinuous stairway to the flatland in front of the port, while others lined a wide path. All of them rested on a small foundation, whether in wood or in cement, almost like pile dwellings, and the sole door opened onto a stairway while, to the sides, the laundry fluttered, hanging on invisible lines.
Gusts of wind rose suddenly and in a few minutes low clouds shut out the view of the fjords and a lashing sleet began to fall.
It didn’t last long. The clouds moved on and the iceberg slowly reappeared.
Dripping wet, we headed home and could already hear the dogs barking.
Upon our arrival, a small group of children surrounded us with a festive welcome, while Niels offered the dogs, which were tied with strong ropes, their ration of the seal.
They immediately calmed down, putting their short-lived brawls aside for the distribution of food. It was normal for them to stay for days and days without eating, but not for human meanness. Rather, it served to make them more resistant to hunger during long winter hunts. For them, that tidbit of seal would have been enough for three or four more days.
What lovely children! What joy to watch them playing with nothing.
They were sitting in a circle and scratching marks in the earth. Perhaps it was a thanksgiving ritual for the seal that had just been caught, or perhaps its was only a game. Albeit a simple, no frills game. Watching them dressed in just jerseys and short trousers made me feel even colder, although they gave no signs of discomfort, plump as they were.
All of a sudden, they stood up with a shout and dashed breathlessly towards the marina while their shrill voices dissipated into the still air.
At home, Leena was waiting for us.
Niels had met her to the North during a long winter outing. She was about thirty. Her pretty, roundish face reflected the kindness of her heart, while her buxom form made her attractive or, as we would say at home, interesting.
She was in the kitchen concocting a musk ox stew that filled the house with its pungent, mouth-watering odour. And we certainly were hungry!
Well-fed and sitting in front of a large tankard of beer, I listened to Niels.
He told me of how Kalaallit Nunaat, or “White Land”, as Greenland was called in their Inuit tongue, was only apparently an island. Actually, during the winter period when the sea freezes over and the land is blanketed under a thick layer of snow, all the Arctic becomes one large continent and whosoever desires to do so can leave with a sled and dogs from Uummannaq, located on the western coast of the island, and arrive as far as Cape Morris Jesup, which is the northernmost point, venture out to the island of Ellesmere, continue into Canada and as far as Alaska before heading into Siberia, taking as long as decades, facing blizzards that last for weeks and travelling over an infinite white desert with no roads, surviving on seal and a few caribou.
Niels explained that for the Inuit time is something relative, as they have no trains to catch or relatives waiting for them at the station. They live day by day and tomorrow is always a mystery.
Their only guide is the Angakok, the shaman, who is an intermediary with the spirits called tupilaqs.
They have no leader. They are not a bellicose people, nor are they interested in conquering new lands. They are hospitable, cordial, and mostly pacific. The fact that they live continually at the limits of survival has touched their very spirits. For them happiness is living day by day, taking nothing for granted.
This joy of living oozes from their pores.
The name ‘Inuit’ corresponds in their language to ‘Man’, and this says much about the extent to which they consider themselves only and exclusively as ‘people’.
I was fascinated by how kind Niels and Leena were while explaining the itinerary that I would have to follow over the next few days, and I was thrilled to hear them nostalgically recall when they were young and followed their parents during their winter migrations and how they learned to orient themselves by watching the night sky - an open book that everyone should know - where the Northern Lights create immense flashes in the cold, dark nights.
“You see, Simon” said Niels, “our lives are changing. Now there are ski mobiles that take the place of the dogs, generators that have supplied us with electricity. Everything and anything comes from Denmark, but I am still melancholy and think of my dogs and how I will have to go out hunting with them as soon as the ice covers everything. The snow will even cover the houses. What will become of me, of my children, of my people? An Inuit can never be Danish, as he would never know what to do with all their comforts. Here we stay and here we remain Inuit. Our life is regulated by and based on simple, age-old things – and hunting is one of them. Once there were abundant reindeer, caribou, musk oxen, hares, and bears. In the sea there was nothing but seals, narwhals, and rorquals. Now just a few seals allow us to survive.”
His face clouded over and to console him I reminded him that the Arctic Council had been founded with the participation of Denmark as well as Canada, the United States, Russia, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden to defend the Inuit population and animal species.
“Nothing but bureaucracy,” he stood up and muttered, "Come on, let's enjoy a fantastic Arctic night."
The dogs, now quiet, were napping and a seemingly infinite silence enveloped us.
The clear air and a dusky light enhanced the whiteness of the glacier as it slipped into the fjord. The splendid silhouette of the huge iceberg seemed to glow with its own light from within, giving it an aura that illuminated the water around it. What a spectacle! It was midnight.
I had met Niels and Leena two years earlier during my visit to their small village. A sincere friendship was born and I was happy to spend a few days with them before returning to Ilulissat and then to Nuuk.
We went back inside and while falling asleep I realised that I truly was on a mysterious island.
Only during the early 1900s, thanks to the American explorer Robert Edwin Peary, was the circumnavigation of the island completed, and it took until the 1930s for the German geophysicist Alfred Wegener to succeed in penetrating the inland and install a small station at three thousand meters altitude. He survived there a few months, only to lose his life during his return trip.
I had read of Knud Rasmussen, who conducted an expedition at the end of the 1800s, visiting villages located along the north-western coast and founding what would later become the large American base of Thule. He is credited with having brought the history and the life of the Inuit people to our knowledge.
This mysterious island, I thought, where a cold and furious ocean of deep, dark waters laps against its shores, penetrating even deeper inlets, becoming perennial ice beyond the 70° parallel to then join the white dome that dominates the island, Inlandsis, and generating offspring - the icebergs - that float on its waters through the fjords and then southward.
Icebergs are more like mountains of solid water that longingly abandon themselves to the caress of a warm current, subjecting themselves to whipping winds that slowly erode them while they just as slowly melt away. Feared by men and compared to invisible arms that crop up amidst intense fogs and stormy seas, they have always been considered travelling landfalls inadvisable for men but resting spots for birds and seals that shuttle from one to another.
During the brief voyage on board the ship that brought me from Ilulissat to Uummannaq, they formed a long white chain from which, startled by our passage, hosts of sea birds, also white, took flight.
Icebergs arrive slowly and majestically from the great glaciers of the North, from that immense dome that is more than three thousand metres high and nearly one thousand from its edge, that during the winter is like an outstretched hand covering nearly two million square kilometres, its fingers reaching towards the sea, forming elongations that break away from the main mass once summer arrives.
I fall asleep with this image and in the morning, with the first lights of dawn and urged on by instinct, I look out the window towards the distant fjord, needing to assure myself that the large iceberg, now awash with a rose-coloured light, is still waiting to fill my heart with happiness.
This is Greenland. This is the Northern Paradise.
