There are many different types of epileptic seizures, and how often they occur can vary enormously. The condition is fairly common and as many as one percent of the population in Norway are diagnosed with epilepsy.
Epilepsy is not a disease in itself, but a symptom of abnormal brain activity. There are many conditions that can result in this type of brain activity, and the cause of the epilepsy therefore varies from person to person. It may be any type of disease or injury in the brain. In about 50% of the cases, we do not know the cause of the epilepsy.
Epileptic seizures can also occur in people that do not have an epilepsy diagnosis. More than 10% of the population will at some point in their life experience having an epileptic seizure as a result of special circumstances or diseases. People with epilepsy have a higher risk of getting seizures than others.
