PARIS With Penelope Cruz tossing her glossy hair front row and models swishing out in the grandest of red carpet gowns, Giorgio Armani unveiled on Monday his first high fashion line. Let's call it movie couture. For at this Giorgio Armani Privé debut, the Italian designer had his eyes firmly on Hollywood - in all its current glamour and also in its silver-screen heyday.

At Dior, John Galliano had softened the theatrics, and his beautiful show of 1960s teens in Andy Warhol's studio morphing into Empress Josephine was masterly in its sweep of both technique and imagination. Just in case anyone doubted that this is the reigning emperor of visually voluptuous haute couture, Galliano strutted out dressed as Napoleon, whose tricorn hat looked rather more fetching in red velvet on the models.

Between the two shows, which opened the spring-summer couture season, the designers gave perfect lessons in where couture stands at the start of the 21st century. It remains as a glorious tribute to refinement and handwork, but it is also built on celebrity and just that fleeting fame that Warhol predicted.

Armani put the best of himself into the collection, using his favorite neutral colors, tinged with mauve, among a preponderance of black and a single splash of chartreuse. But like all great designers, Armani knows how to turn black into a color, lighting it with a glimmer of jet beads, giving it a sheen on silken tassels or the effect of a pen and ink sketch when lacy patterns traced a bodice. That was reduced to a tiny pair of lace triangles in the case of just one dress that looked as if it might turn into a wardrobe malfunction.

Armani had also worked on subtle decoration, with winking crystal beads, pearl embroidery or lacy appliqué flowers showing a breadth of craftsmanship. But the story was in the silhouette. And did Armani have a tale to tell! Make that "fishtail," for the hemlines fanned out at the back, puffed up with tulle or carved from thick Duchess satin, to brush the mirrored runway.

"I was inspired by Boldini - and for me a really beautiful woman is like a portrait," Armani said, referring to the sculpted fin de siècle silhouettes of the Italian artist who settled in Paris and became high society's portraitist.

The result was grand, beautiful and graphic, yet too much a homage to Armani's - and the general public's - image of couture's lofty grandeur to have the expected punch of modernity. Although the barely-there wisps of bias-cut dresses for the gym-honed are now a designer cliché, it would have been good to see fabrics drape fluidly over the body, rather than reposing on ultra-light crinolines.

The models mostly balanced cocktail hats on upswept chignons, but when the hats were swapped for a sporty cap or a sequined beret, a gust of fresh air blew metaphorically through the tiny loft.

Cruz, trawling for outfits to wear for the premiere of her new movie "Sahara," said she was thrilled at Armani's step up into couture and "very happy to be part of it," while the veteran Italian actress Claudia Cardinale, who has just launched a book on stars, said: "For me he is the only one - he's the best."

Significantly, the collection will leave Paris for Los Angeles, where the Oscars take place on Feb. 27, and then go on to New York and Hong Kong for client showings.

How did Galliano get from Warhol's women in the 1960s, with their skinny, mini, high-waisted proportions to Empire gowns? The emperor of self promotion and his twig-thin acolytes never had sumptuous velvet coats to parade round the New York "Factory" that Galliano recreated in all its shiny silvered modernism. But the show opened with black body suits and the kooky look of Warhol muse Edie Sedgwick. This was the introduction to a new phase for Galliano at Dior: precise and graphic tailoring, cut high on the bodice. Since the bottom halves were panty hose and boots, this was effectively a focus on spring jackets and coats. They might have seemed in context a bit too much like vintage retro. In the stores the boldly buttoned jackets will look streamlined and modern.

"I wanted to compare the 1960s adolescent silhouette with the Empire line," Galliano said. And the leap was not as crazy as it sounds. The final part of the show, with its innocent white dresses, tucked, decorated and embroidered with fleurs-de-lis blue, expressed a delicious summer lightness. Sure, there were chandeliers of crystal diadems in the bird-cage hairdos, but the models looked fresh and pretty, and this was far from the wild extravagance and decadence of earlier Dior couture shows.

Shown with low-heeled knee boots that also united the different centuries, the Josephine dresses recalled the collection Galliano did for Givenchy eight years ago.

PARIGI Con Penelope Cruz in prima fila che faceva mostra dei capelli lucenti e le modelle nei più maestosi abiti fruscianti da tappeto rosso, Giorgio Armani lunedì ha svelato la sua prima linea di alta moda. Chiamiamola couture da film. Perché per questo debutto di Giorgio Armani Privé, lo stilista italiano si è chiaramente ispirato a Hollywood, a quella attuale in tutto il suo fascino ma anche al miglior cinema dei tempi andati.
Da Dior, John Galliano ha ridotto la teatralità, e la sua bellissima sfilata di adolescenti anni sessanta nello Studio di Andy Warhol trasformate nell'imperatrice Josephine era gestita in modo eccellente sia nella tecnica che nell'immaginazione. Nel caso qualcuno dubitasse ancora che si trattasse dell’imperatore regnante dell’alta moda voluttuosa, con orgoglio Galliano è uscito vestito da Napoleone, con il cappello a tricorno che però risultava molto più attraente nella versione in velluto rosso indossata dalle modelle.
Tra le due sfilate, che hanno aperto la stagione couture primavera-estate, gli stilisti hanno dimostrato perfettamente che posizione occupa l’alta moda all'inizio del ventunesimo secolo. Rimane uno splendido omaggio alla raffinatezza e al lavoro fatto a mano, ma allo stesso tempo è fondata sulla celebrità e su quella fama passeggera predetta da Warhol.
Armani ha dato il meglio di sé nella collezione, utilizzando i suoi colori neutri preferiti, venati di color malva, con una preponderanza di nero e un unico tocco di giallo chartreuse. Ma come tutti i grandi stilisti, Armani sa come trasformare il nero in un colore, illuminandolo con luccicanti perline di giaietto, facendo brillare gli inserti in seta o rendendo i motivi in pizzo che disegnavano un corpetto simili a uno schizzo a penna. Solo nel caso di un abito, il tutto era ridotto a un paio di minuscoli triangoli di pizzo che parevano una disfunzione del guardaroba.
Armani ha anche lavorato sulla decorazione impercettibile, con ammiccanti perline di cristallo, ricami di perle o applique di fiori in pizzo a dimostrare la qualità della fattura. Ma la vera storia era nelle silhouette. E non si trattava certo di una storia senza capo né coda! La coda era quella di una sirena, perché gli orli sventolavano dietro, gonfiati con il tulle o intagliati in uno spesso raso ducale, per sfiorare la passerella a specchio.
“Ho tratto ispirazione da Boldini, per me una donna davvero bella è come un ritratto,” ha commentato Armani riferendosi alle silhouette di fine ‘800 scolpite dall’artista italiano che si trasferì a Parigi e divenne un ritrattista dell'alta società.
Il risultato era maestoso, bellissimo e vivido, anche se un po’ troppo concentrato sull’immagine che Armani, e il pubblico, hanno della couture e della sua altezzosa imponenza per poter dare quel tocco di modernità che ci si aspettava. Anche se i brandelli quasi assenti degli abiti tagliati di sbieco per i corpi scolpiti in palestra sono ormai un clichè per gli stilisti, sarebbe stato bello vedere stoffe avvolgenti in modo fluido e non sostenute da leggerissime crinoline.
La maggior parte delle modelle teneva in equilibrio sulla testa un cappellino da cocktail montato su uno chignon all’insù, ma quando al posto dei cappelli sono arrivati un berretto sportivo o un basco coi brillantini, una metaforica ventata di aria fresca ha attraversato il piccolo loft.
Cruz, a caccia di abiti da indossare alla prima del suo nuovo film "Sahara," si è detta elettrizzata dall'entrata di Armani nell'alta moda e "molto contenta di farne parte," mentre la veterana attrice italiana Claudia Cardinale, che ha appena pubblicato un libro sulle star, ha commentato: “Per me lui è l’unico, è il migliore.”
Da notare che la collezione lascerà Parigi alla volta di Los Angeles, dove il 27 febbraio sono di scena gli Oscar, proseguendo poi per New York e Hong Kong dove si terranno le presentazioni ai clienti.
Come ha fatto Galliano a passare dalle donne di Warhol negli anni sessanta, con le loro proporzioni ossute, mini e a vita alta agli abiti Impero? Forse le gonne ampie e le pance gonfie degli abiti dell’era Napoleonica stavano a indicare quanto feconda è la mente dello stilista per la moda. Tra un abbraccio e l'altro di Monica Bellucci, Sofia Coppola e Marianne Faithfull nel backstage, Galliano ha citato Bob Dylan: "Andy Warhol è Napoleone vestito di stracci."
L’imperatore dell’auto promozione e i suoi seguaci in parrucca non hanno mai avuto sontuosi cappotti di velluto da sfoggiare nella “Factory” di New York che Galliano ha ricreato in tutto il suo argentato luccicante modernismo. Ma la sfilata si è aperta con tute aderenti nere e il look eccentrico della musa di Warhol, Edie Sedgwick. È l’introduzione di una nuova fase per Galliano da Dior: sartoriale, precisa e grafica, con un taglio alto dei corpetti. Dato che per la metà di sotto c’erano calzamaglie e stivali, l’attenzione era focalizzata sulle giacche e i cappotti primaverili. Nel contesto potevano apparire un po’ troppo vintage retrò, ma nei negozi le giacche con i loro bottoni evidenti risulteranno slanciate e moderne.
“Volevo mettere a confronto la silhouette adolescenziale degli anni sessanta con la linea impero,” ha spiegato Galliano. E il salto non era assurdo come può sembrare. La parte conclusiva della sfilata, caratterizzata dai vestiti bianchi e innocenti, ripresi, decorati e ricamati con gigli blu, comunicavano una deliziosa leggerezza estiva. Certo, c’erano candelabri di diademi di cristallo nelle acconciature tipo gabbia degli uccellini, ma le modelle erano fresche e carine, lontano dalla stravaganza e dalla decadenza selvagge delle precedenti sfilate alta moda di Dior.
Mostrati con gli stivali al ginocchio e senza tacco che a loro volta hanno unito i diversi secoli, gli abiti Josephine ricordavano la collezione che Galliano aveva presentato per Givenchy otto anni fa.
Da allora ha imparato a lavorare con una eleganza assoluta. A differenza dell’ultima sfilata prêt-à-porter di Dior, dove sembrava che un comitato avesse legato lo stilista e costrettolo alla praticità, questa sfilata era romantica, artistica in modo ragionevole e, anche se non rivoluzionaria, ha segnato, un momento importante per l’alta moda nel bicentenario di Napoleone.
LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton ha dichiarato lunedì che la vendita dei marchi Celine e Givenchy è fuori questione, aggiungendo che le considera le future star della strategia multimarchio costruita per più di 15 anni.

Né le 24 Mars 1951 à Elmira, dans l’état de New York, Thomas Jacob Hilfiger, second d’une famille de neuf enfants, grandit dans une petite maison Victorienne aux murs blancs. Son père travaille comme horloger dans une joaillerie, sa mère comme nurse ; même avec deux salaires les fins de mois sont parfois difficiles.... Tommy Hilfiger hérite du charme et du sens du style de son père, mais sa vraie passion pour la mode se déclare qu’en 1969. Pour financer ses vacances il travaille comme vendeur dans une boutique Hippy de Cape Cod. Il revient de ce périple estival en scandale avec les cheveux longs.
Réalisant qu’Elmira est un désert côté style, mais une ville peuplé de jeunes qui comme lui ne demandent qu’à vivre leur époque, Tommy Hilfiger entreprend, avec deux amis, un commerce de jeans auprès de ses camarades de classe.
