La pendule, sonnant minuit
Ironiquement nous engage
A nous rappeler quel usage
Nous fîmes du jour qui s'enfuit:
Aujourd'hui, date fatidique,
Vendredi, treize, nous avons,
Malgré tout ce que nous savons,
Mené le train d'un hérétique.
Nous avons blasphémé Jésus,
Des Dieux le plus incontestable!
Comme un parasite à la table
De quelque monstrueux Crésus,
Nous avons, pour plaire à la brute,
Digne vassale des Démons,
Insulté ce que nous aimons
Et flatté ce qui nous rebute;
Contristé, servile bourreau,
Le faible qu'à tort on méprise;
Salué l'énorme Bêtise,
La Bêtise au front de taureau;
Baisé la stupide Matière
Avec grande dévotion,
Et de la putréfaction
Béni la blafarde lumière
Enfin, nous avons pour noyer
Le vertige dans le délire,
Nous, prêtres orgueilleux de la Lyre,
Dont la gloire est de déployer
L'ivresse des choses funèbres,
Bu sans soif et mangé sans faim!...

The clock that sounds its midnight chimes
has summoned us ironically
to pay a little scrutiny
to how, this day, we spent our time.
Today—the date's uncanny, though:
a Friday, and the thirteenth, too
—we have, in spite of what we know,
been heretics in what we do.
We've blasphemed Jesus, have we not?
our god, if there were gods above:
a sponger at a gala feast
hosted by syndicated lies;
a slave to poison and disguise,
we've taken pains to please the beast:
insulted what it is we love
and flattered what revolts our heart.
As creeping hangman we won't spare
the weak we wrongfully despise
yet crawled before stupidity,
its bull brow, its immensity.
With tears of passion in our eyes
we've kissed blank matter everywhere;
and blessed the light as dawn of day
that's but a shimmer of decay.
At last, to drown our vertigo,
we pompous priest of drum and harp,
for whom it's glory to deploy
the drunkenness of death and woe,
we've drunk with neither thirst nor joy
and eaten without appetite.
Let's quickly now put out our light:
let's lie here, hiding in the dark. |
