Van open riool naar beschermd stadsgezicht

Een rondvaart over de [rivier] is genieten van stilte en historie. Dat was vroeger wel anders. In de jaren zestig was het water van de [rivier] ernstig vervuild. Muren en ombouwingen waren verzakt of zelfs ingestort. In 1964 verscheen een nieuw structuurplan. Dat hield in: de sloop van zes kilometer aan historische en monumentale panden en het dempen van grote gedeeltes van de [rivier]. De [plaatselijke] bevolking wilde maar al te graag van ‘die vieze stinksloten’ verlost zijn. In de gemeenteraadsvergadering van januari 1969 werd het dempen een feit.

Echter, de Rijksdienst voor Monumentenzorg wees op dat moment een groot gedeelte van de... binnenstad, inclusief [rivier], aan als beschermd stadsgezicht. Dit particuliere initiatief van een aantal [inwoners van de stad] behoedde de [rivier] voor demping. Het gemeentebestuur gooide haar beleid om en begon in 1973 met de restauratie van de [rivier]. Ook werd een stelsel van rioleringen aangelegd, waarop nu alle panden zijn aangesloten.

From open sewer to urban conservation area

Taking a round trip on the [river] gives you the opportunity to enjoy the serenity and history offered by the river – but that wasn’t always the case. By the 1960s the water of the [river] was seriously polluted, while walls and building extensions had settled or even collapsed. But in 1964 a new structure plan was published. This plan envisaged demolishing six kilometres worth of historical buildings as well as filling in large sections of the [river]. The populace of [city] was more than ready to be rid of ‘those dirty, stinking ditches’. It was in the municipal council meeting of January 1969 that the filling in of the river was approved.

However, at that moment the Netherlands Department for Conservation designated a large section of the city centre of..., including the [river], as urban conservation area. This was the result of a private initiative by a number of inhabitants of [city] to protect the [river] from being filled in. The municipal administration reversed its position and in 1973 started restoring the [river]. A sewer system, to which all buildings are now connected, was also installed.

The dropdown menus have been divided into two-dimensional panels with similar items grouped together under headings. This eliminates scrolling for those with smaller screens, and also improves readability. More information on the changes... Where is the "My ProZ.com" menu? Mouseover your name at the top of the screen. Here you will find information about your account, your email settings, and more. The "My ProZ.com" menu was moved up here to simplify the main navigation, and to keep all of this type of information together. I cannot find something If you are having trouble finding something with the new menu, please submit a support request.
