What are tics?
Tics are movements or sounds that are repeated over and over again. Tics happen suddenly and often come in bouts with one tic rapidly being repeated. Some people describe tics as 'habits' but this is an unhelpful term, because tics are involuntary. This means that the child with a tic is not deliberately making the movement or the sound. The reason that parents and teachers get confused about the involuntary nature of tics is because a child can temporarily suppress the tic if told to. This usually results in a build up of tension, and a brief 'explosion' of tics, which relieve the tension. Children with tics are often misunderstood. Their ability to temporarily suppress tics may lead to pusnishment when the tics recur.
