Додека војната во Босна и Херцеговина доведе до повеќе од 200.000 мртви, а настаните на Косово предизвикаа загуба од повеќе илјади човечки животи, Македонија знаеше да ја мобилизира својата енергија, да ја пронајде својата внатрешна сила и да го манифестира чувството за одговорност решавајќи го, со помош на меѓународната заедница, конфликтот кој потенцијално можеше да биде исто толку насилен како и оние во нејзиното соседство, ограничувајќи ги, во исто време, загубите на човечки жртви на околу стотина.
За сиот овој турбулентен период, секако и до ден денешен, Македонија успеа да ја задржи на свое чело мултиетничката влада, составена од македонски и албански партии, единствен таков случај во регионот.
Договорот од Охрид, одобрен од парламентот, доведе до значајни промени во Уставот, вклучително и во неговата преамбула. Не беше едноставно да се постигне согласност, но чинам дека денес големо мнозинство на населението смета дека овој договор и донесе на Македонија мир и стабилност, создавајќи ги, на тој начин, условите за идниот просперитет. Тие веќе претставуваат референца за во регионот, па и пошироко.

While the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina took a heavy toll of over 200,000 and thousands of people perished during the turmoil in Kosovo, Macedonia knew how to harness its energy, seek out inner strength and manifest its sense of responsibility in resolving, with assistance from the international community, the conflict that was on the brink of becoming as violent as the conflicts in its neighbourhood, while keeping its death toll at about a hundred.
Throughout this turbulent period and of course afterwards to this very day, Macedonia has managed to keep the multiethnic trait of its governments made up of Macedonian and Albanian political parties, thus being the unique case in the region.
The Ohrid agreement, endorsed by Parliament, led to considerable changes to the Constitution, including its Preamble. Reaching an agreement was no easy task, but I believe that today an overwhelming majority of the population considers that this agreement brought Macedonia peace and stability, thus paving the way for its future progress. They have already set the pattern for the region and beyond.
