German-English (English-German), technical/scientific/commercial/general
Training in the German engineering industry as well as tertiary education in English language and literature give an ideal background for translation of engineering and general technical documents.
Naturally, it has also prepared me for a variety of texts of a more general nature.
Further Details of Professional Background
Objective: Freelance Translation Work
My objective is to participate in primarily technical documentation projects as a German/English Translator, where I could use my extensive experience in many different industries as well as my very sound and wide-ranging educational and training background.
I have the rare combination of solid technical training (in Germany) together with tertiary education in linguistics, and good work experience in both areas.
Technical Skills
Developed from a traditional shop floor apprenticeship in the German machinery industry, these skills are concentrated in the engineering design and drafting area. In more than 20 years work experience, I have covered special purpose machinery, tooling, plant layout, materials handling, piping, general industrial equipment and building structures.
Writing/Translating Skills
Based on a sound educational background in linguistics, I have more than five years full time experience in technical writing. This experience mainly relates to special purpose machinery (Pfaff Industrial Sewing Machines) but also covers the progress documentation of a major Australian mining project. In addition, I am a qualified German/English translator and regularly deal with the translation of technical documents.
Since 1997, I have worked extensively for BOSCH (Australia) on automotive specifications and other documents requiring translation from German.
Computer Skills
With my engineering design work, I gradually moved into computer aided drafting in the late 80s which gave me a general familiarity with computer work. Recently, I took part in a 6 months full time computer training course at CPTI, Melbourne, which I successfully completed with a Certificate IV in Microcomputer Technology. This course covered operating systems, main application software, accounting fundamentals and software, as well as programming in Pascal and C languages.
