Portugal may not be favourites to win this summer’s FIFA World Cup™, but supporters will know that with Cristiano Ronaldo in the side, anything is possible. The 29-year-old crowned a magnificent 2013 by guiding A Seleção das Quinas to Brazil in November, delivering a masterclass in instinctive movement and composed finishing to see off Sweden in the play-offs. Now, the finals await.
There was a moment in Portugal’s 3-2 qualifying win over Sweden where, with Ronaldo bearing down on goal, forward Hugo Almeida raised his arms in celebration. Such was Almeida’s confidence in his captain’s ability, waiting for the shot was deemed unnecessary. His judgement proved right. Ronaldo duly advanced to put the ball past goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson. It was one of his three goals on that remarkable night in Solna. With Portugal leading 1-0 from the first leg in Lisbon – thanks to Ronaldo’s late header – the win was enough to progress by 4-2 on aggregate. “We knew it was a life-or-death play-off,” says Ronaldo. “We went into the tie with a very strong mentality.”
The drama was another chapter in Portugal’s recent play-off history. They were forced into tiebreakers with Bosnia and Herzegovina for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ and UEFA EURO 2012. They won both times, 2-0 and 6-2 on aggregate respectively. When Sweden were drawn, A Seleção das Quinas had experience on their side. They also had Ronaldo. By the end, Almeida’s jubilance reflected the confidence he enjoys among the squad. “That’s actually really important,” Ronaldo says. “That game in Sweden was one of the best we’ve played in a long time, and by far our best game in the qualifying phase. I feel the chemistry between me and my team-mates is very good.”
The glittering performance capped a stunning year for Ronaldo. By late December, the Real Madrid CF forward had scored 69 goals in 59 games for club and country since the beginning of 2013. They included eight goals in 10 qualifying games for Portugal. In January he won the FIFA Ballon d’Or 2013 ahead of Lionel Messi and Franck Ribéry. Accepting the award in Zurich, he held an emotional speech. “Well, it was a very happy moment,” he says. “When I saw my son come running towards the stage, many feelings came to my mind. It was a very special moment for me and all those people who have helped in one way or another.”
Like with all successful footballers, Ronaldo’s records are not owed merely to chance. Nor is a journey going from his childhood on the island of Madeira (where he opened his own museum in December), via the youth academy at Sporting Clube de Portugal to iconic status at Manchester United FC and Real Madrid. Ask former and current coaches about his best quality and they answer the same. “Ronaldo is really professional,” Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti said, puffing his cheeks in admiration. “The most professional player I’ve ever met,” former chief José Mourinho remarked. Another member of the club’s coaching staff told the story of Ronaldo jumping into the ice bath after returning from a game at 3am.
