We learn, roughly, that the criminal of today, by a large majority, ranges between the ages of twenty-four and eighteen. What, then, is the thought process of an eighteen-year-old boy?
He was placed, at the age of five, in a school. And there he was taught, along with his alphabet, that he would grow up to be an important citizen in this world. At home he is usually expected to amount to something when he "grows up."
He carries this innocent-appearing virus with him into his teens and, finding himself close to manhood and an important seat in the sun, he allows the germs to spread beyond all hope of inoculation against them.
And then at sixteen or seventeen or eighteen, uncouth truth rises like a concrete wall before him and he runs into it and bruises himself.
Experience, in a gagging dose, has informed him that there are only two people in the world who care whether he lives or dies. But he cannot always lean back upon his father and mother for the necessary feeling of importance.
Then comes a variety of things, never identical from case to case. A third person makes eyes at him and he wants to have money, which is denied him through the regular channels because the world does not care to give him a job. He wishes to appear important and daring among his fellows he has a real crying need for money and is hungry or cold.

Vi lär oss på en höft att det stora flertalet av dagens brottslingar är i åldern 18 till 24 år. Vilken är då tankeprocessen hos en 18-årig pojke?
Vid fem års ålder sattes han i en skola. Där lärde han sig, tillsammans med alfabetet, att han skulle växa upp och bli en viktig medborgare i denna vår värld. Därhemma väntar man sig vanligen att det skall bli någonting av honom när han "blir stor".
Han bär detta till synes oskyldiga virus med sig in i tonåren, och när han finner att han är nära att träda in i de vuxnas led och inta sin plats i solen låter han viruset sprida sig till en punkt där ingen vaccinering längre biter.
Och så, när han är 16, 17 eller 18 år går den brutala sanningen upp för honom likt en betongvägg, och han springer in i den och slår sig gul och blå.
Erfarenheten har, i en kväljande dos, informerat honom om att det bara finns två personer i hela världen som bryr sig om ifall han lever eller dör. Men han kan inte alltid falla tillbaka på sin far och mor för att uppleva den där nödvändiga känslan av att vara betydelsefull.
Därefter inträffar en mängd olika saker, aldrig identiska från fall till fall. En tredje person kastar kärvänliga blickar på honom och han vill ha pengar. Dessa nekas honom dock på de vanliga kanalerna, eftersom världen inte bryr sig om att ge honom ett jobb. Han vill framstå som tuff eller viktig bland sina kamrater. Han har ett verkligt, skriande behov av pengar och är hungrig eller fryser.

The types of texts that I am translating are technical manuals, product presentations, business-related texts, computer programs, web pages and fiction or non-fiction books. I also translate subtitles for films and videos as well as performing editing or proofreading in Swedish.
