Source text - German Martin Luther wurde am 10. November 1483 in Eisleben im Harz geboren. Bald zog seine Familie nach Mansfeld, wo er aufwuchs. Luther besuchte die Lateinschulen in Magdeburg und Eisenach und nahm mit 17 Jahren sein Studium an der Universität in Erfurt auf. Nach vier Jahren schloss er an der artistischen Fakultät mit dem Magisterexamen ab. Danach begann er auf Wunsch seines Vaters ein Rechtsstudium, brach es aber nach zwei Monaten ab, um Augustinermönch zu werden. I suppose she must have looked rather delightful, for Mrs. Darling put her hand to her heart and cried, 'Oh, why can't you remain like this for ever!' This was all that passed between them on the subject, but henceforth Wendy knew that she must grow up. You always know after you are two. Two is the beginning of the end. Of course they lived at 14, and until Wendy came her mother was the chief one. She was a lovely lady, with a romantic mind and such a sweet mocking mouth. Her romantic mind was like the tiny boxes, one within the other, that come from the puzzling East, however many you discover, there is always one more; and her sweet mocking mouth had one kiss on it that Wendy could never get, though there it was, perfectly conspicuous in the right-hand corner. The way Mr Darling won her was this: the many gentlemen who had been boys when she was a girl discovered simultaneously that they loved her, and they all ran to her house to propose to her except Mr Darling, who took a cab and nipped in first, and so he got her. He got all of her, except the innermost box and the kiss. He never knew about the box, and in time he gave up trying for the kiss. Wendy thought Napoleon could have got it, but I can picture him trying, and then going off in a passion, slamming the door. English to Portuguese: Elementary Particles and the Forces of Nature
Source text - English Aristotle believed that all the matter in the universe was made up of four basic elements, earth, air, fire, and water. These elements were acted on by two forces: gravity, the tendency for earth and water to sink, and levity, the tendency for air and fire to rise. This division of the contents of the universe into matter and forces is still used today. Aristotle believed that matter was continuous, that is, one could divide a piece of matter into smaller and smaller bits without any limit: one never came up against a grain of matter that could not be divided further. A few Greeks, however, such as Democritus, held that matter was inherently grainy and that everything was made up of large numbers of various different kinds of atoms. (The word atom means "indivisible" in Greek). For centuries the argument continued without any real evidence on either side, but in 1803 the British chemist and physicist, John Dalton, pointed out that the fact that chemical compounds always combined in certain proportions could be explained by the grouping together of atoms to form units called molecules. However, the argument between the two schools of thought was not finally settled in favor of the atomists until the early years of this century. One of the important pieces of physical evidence was provided by Einstein. In a paper written in 1905, a few weeks before the famous paper on special relativity, Einstein pointed out that what was called Brownian motion--the irregular, randim motion of small particles of dust suspended in a liquid--could be explained as the effect of atoms of the liquid colliding with the dust particles. English to Portuguese: Translation sample III - Director's comments excerpt
Source text - English As we go through the movie, I'll try to point out some of the inventions that Ellen provided us to help develop the character and find extra comedy. We really tried to create a kind of seamless connection between people who are on television and people who are watching television. I thought that it was interesting to begin the movie with somebody actually watching themselves on television. That's why we devised that shot with Ellen, to kick the movie off visually. *** Here's another video shot, again, not scripted. But that moment looked so much more interesting on video than it did on film. We soon found ourselves editing the scene together and then going back and culling through literally hours and hours of video footage trying to find moments that were just that much more interesting, entertaining, funnier, edgier on the video. There was a real difference between the way the same exact moment, the same exact take would play out on film versus video. Generally, things on video seemed a little more truthful. Because we're used to seeing the world through that kind of news-documentarial style. A scene like this was very engrossing on the video, even more so than on the film version. So we used the video quite a bit. Foi por isso que concebemos aquela cena com a Ellen, para iniciar visualmente o filme. *** Aqui está, de novo, outra cena gravada com a câmara de vídeo, sem guião. Porém, aquele momento parecia mais interessante gravado numa câmara de vídeo, do que gravado por uma câmara convencional de cinema. Desde cedo que demos por nós juntos, a editar uma cena, e depois, a voltar atrás e a seleccionar, literalmente, de entre horas e horas de película gravada, tentando encontrar momentos que fossem muito mais interessantes, atractivos, cómicos e mais intensos, em vídeo. Havia uma verdadeira diferença entre a maneira como o mesmo momento exacto, a mesma sequência exacta se desenrolavam, em filme e em vídeo. Geralmente, as cenas em vídeo pareciam um pouco mais verosímeis, por estarmos habituados a ver o mundo através desse estilo noticioso, de documentário. Uma cena como esta era muito cativante, em vídeo, ainda mais do que na versão em filme. Por isso, utilizámos bastante o vídeo.
