Traditionally, lilies were classified into the Asiatic, Oriental and Longiflorum hybrids, each with its specific positive and negative characteristics. The Asiatic hybrids, for example, are known for their wide array of colours, their generally profuse flowering and their smaller bulb size in comparison with the Oriental hybrids. On the other hand, the flowers of Asiatic hybrids appear smaller and less exotic when compared to the other two groups and some of its cultivars are susceptible to leaf scorch. The Oriental hybrids produce large flowers with a beautiful shape, have a stronger fragrance, and need less light but take longer to produce, offer less colour variation, and are susceptible to various diseases. The Longiflorum hybrids can be distinguished by their large, calyx-shaped flowers, their need for a shorter cold period and their good forcing characteristics. Their less positive characteristics are their very limited range of colour and their susceptibility to virus problems. After years of breeding activities conducted within these separate groups, it had become nearly impossible to make any more improvements.

Thông thường, các loại lili sẽ được phân thành các nhóm giống lai Asiatic, Oriental và Logiflorum, với mỗi nhóm sẽ có những ưu và khuyết điểm riêng của mình. Điển hình như nhóm Asiatic, thường được biết đến bởi sự đa dạng màu sắc của hoa, số lượng hoa nhiều và kích thước củ nhỏ so với nhóm Oriental. Mặt khác, hoa thuộc nhóm Asiatic lại nhỏ hơn và không đặc biệt như hai nhóm còn lại. Một vài loài trong số chúng lại khá nhạy cảm khi cây rụng lá. Nhóm lai Oriental cho hoa lớn hơn với hình dáng bắt mắt, có mùi hương nồng hơn và cần ít ánh sáng khi sinh trưởng hơn nhưng lại cần nhiều thời gian hơn để ra hoa, màu sắc hoa lại không đa dạng, và rất nhạy cảm đối với dịch bệnh. Nhóm giống lai Longiflorum lại khác biệt bởi đài hoa hình xoắn ốc với kích thước lớn, có thể sinh trưởng trong điều kiện lạnh và những đặc tính có thể điều khiển được. Những nhược điểm có thể có đến của chúng là màu sắc không được đa dạng và rất dễ bị virus tấn công. Sau nhiều năm tiến hành các hoạt động gieo trồng những nhóm cá thể riêng biệt này, người ta đã bắt đầu đưa ra những cải tiến mới.
