ITINERARIO 4
L’itinerario ha inizio dall’abitato di Isili, raggiungibile in automobile seguendo la SS128, il tratto proveniente da Serri è indicato come SP59, o in treno. All’ingresso meridionale del paese, nei pressi del parco, sono riconoscibili i ruderi seminterrati del Nuraghe Asusa. Tra le vie del centro, si incontrano numerose botteghe artigiane, a dimostrazione di una realtà produttiva di stampo tradizionale ancora attiva e dinamica. I settori trainanti sono l’intaglio del legno, la tessitura del tappeto e la lavorazione del rame, ben rappresentati nel settecentesco Ex Convento degli Scolopi, recentemente riconvertito a Museo del Rame. Proseguendo oltre l’area nordoccidentale dell’abitato, nei pressi del belvedere Fontana Manna, si trovano le due Domus de janas Tana de Mrexiani, piccole sepolture di età preistorica databili al IV millennio a.C.
Dopo la visita del paese, da via Aldo Moro, a sud dell’abitato, s’imbocca la strada Isili-Fadali che ingloba Sa Bia De Is Caminantes e che, dopo aver compiuto un percorso anulare, permette di ricongiungersi alla statale all’altezza del lago San Sebastiano, a nord di Isili, aggirando il centro abitato. La strada Isili-Fadali passa accanto al Ponte Brabaciera, che risale all’età imperiale. All’epoca la struttura, il cui nome deriva dal cinquecentesco Bau Arciera, ‘guado con archi’, raggiungeva una lunghezza di circa 30 metri. Nel territorio di Isili sono stati individuati altri due ponti, uno dei quali fortemente rimaneggiato: si confermano così i dati epigrafici e documentari che evidenziano nella zona del Sarcidano occidentale il luogo in cui passava la strada che collegava Karales a Ulbia. Proseguendo lungo il percorso anulare, si raggiunge il Nuraghe Longu, che svetta tra i campi. La presenza di strutture abitative e di numerosi frammenti ceramici di età storica fornisce ulteriore conferma di un frequente riutilizzo dei siti di età nuragica in età romana. Percorsi altri 2 km su questa strada, si incontra la Chiesa di Sant’Antonio di Fadali, del XV-XVI secolo, recuperata dallo stato di rudere con un intervento di restauro e inserita in uno spazio verde attrezzato, adiacente al nuraghe e al villaggio omonimi.
Si raggiunge quindi la SS128, punto panoramico da cui si gode il suggestivo scorcio del lago, in località Is Barrocus; qui, proprio al centro dell’invaso, circondata dall’acqua e non raggiungibile, è situata la Chiesa campestre di San Sebastiano. A questo punto si consiglia di fare una tappa all’interessante Villaggio nuragico di Monti Arcu, posto su una piccola altura presso la stazione ferroviaria dismessa di Sarcidano. L’insediamento fu recuperato con un intervento di salvataggio durante i lavori per la realizzazione dello svincolo per la diga di Is Barroccus. Tornando verso l’abitato e chiudendo il percorso, si scende presso la parete per l’arrampicata sportiva e, dopo una camminata di circa 500 m lungo un sentiero suggestivo immerso nella vegetazione, si arriva alle Domus de janas Is Concali de Tzoppus. Si risale quindi sulla statale e, ritornando verso l’abitato di Isili, si prosegue in auto fino al Nuraghe Is Paras, segnalato e gestito. È questo uno dei nuraghi più importanti del territorio e spicca per la sua torre centrale, visitabile, di ben 13 m di altezza con copertura a tholos. Anche in questo sito è documentata la frequentazione in età romana.
Ripresa la SS128 verso Nurallao, si supera l’area dell’esteso Insediamento e necropoli romana di Sa Bidda Eccia e, giunti al bivio, si procede a nord-est lungo la SS197 fino a Nuragus. Da qui, prendendo via Sant’Elia, si seguono le indicazioni per il Nuraghe Santu Milanu e per il piccolo Pozzo Sacro Coni riutilizzati, con adattamenti delle strutture, in periodo romano. Non sono distanti – il percorso è segnalato – i ruderi del Nuraghe Valenza, pentalobato, la cui costruzione fu probabilmente interrotta in corso d’opera. In prossimità dei ruderi della Chiesa di Santa Maria, medievale, costruita con materiale di spoglio, sono stati effettuati scavi che attestano la frequentazione del territorio dall’età punica fino all’Alto Medioevo. Dell’insediamento di Valenza, di età romana, non si conoscono ancora i limiti e l’estensione; il geografo Tolomeo la localizza nel territorio di Nuragus. Presso la chiesa di Santa Maria è stato rinvenuto un miliario che ricorda i restauri della strada a opera degli imperatori Valentiniano I e Valente e testimonia, pertanto, la persistenza dell’uso dell’arteria stradale romana almeno fino al IV secolo d.C.: l’insediamento di Valenza doveva essere dislocato lungo l’asse viario principale che metteva in comunicazione i porti di Karales e Ulbia. L’abitato di Parte Valenza, l’antica città di età romana, è ancora documentato come sede di Curatoria nel Giudicato d’Arborea.
Da qui si consiglia di dirigersi in auto verso la diga; percorsi circa 1,5 km dall’insediamento di Valenza s’incontra la Chiesa campestre di Sant’Elia, dove è attestata la frequentazione punico-romana. Al confine con Nurallao, dopo avere superato un tratto dismesso della ferrovia, si giunge davanti alla nota Tomba di giganti di Aiodda, che ingloba nella struttura della sua pianta ‘navetiforme’ (ovoidale allungata) numerose e più antiche statue-menhir.
Tornati quindi indietro a Nuragus, si prosegue sulla SP16 fino a Genoni, dove una piccola ed elevata Giara sovrasta l’abitato. Il paese è caratterizzato dalla vicinanza di Sa Jara Manna, che ne condiziona gli usi e costumi. Grande richiamo esercita la pratica della marchiatura dei cavallini nani che vivono allo stato brado. A tal proposito è stato allestito il Museo del Cavallo nella Casa Serra. Continuando verso il nord del paese si arriva alla Chiesa parrocchiale di Santa Barbara, del XVII secolo, costruita in conci di basalto, e all’Ex Monte Granatico, del secolo successivo, oggi a disposizione del Comune come spazio espositivo. A nord dell’abitato si nota subito l’altura tronco-conica di Santu An¬tine, fuori carta, ove sono presenti i ruderi di un nuraghe circondato dal villaggio. A meno di 1 km dall’abitato di Genoni, sulla sinistra della strada per Nuragus, si trova il Nuraghe San Pietro, dove fu rinvenuto un famoso bronzetto figurato rappresentante un suonatore di corno. Anche questo nuraghe è circondato da un esteso villaggio di eta che ebbe sovrapposizioni fino all’Alto Medioevo.

The journey starts from the town of Isili, accessible by car following the SS128, the trunk coming from Serri marked SP59, or by train. At the southern entrance to the town, in the vicinity of the park, we can notice the underground ruins of the Nuraghe Asusa. There are numerous handicraft shops amongst the streets in the center that are testimony to a productive reality in traditional style that continues in existence to date. The sectors involved are those devoted to wood carving, carpet weaving, and the working of copper, as shown in the eighteen century Ex Convento degli Scolopi, recently turned into the Copper Museum. Reaching beyond the northwestern side of town, by the Fontana Manna belvedere are the two Domus de janas Tana de Mrexiani. These are small prehistoric burials dating back to the fourth millennium BC.
After a visit to the town, from via Aldo Moro in the south of the settlement we come onto the Isili-Fadali road, which unfolds around Sa Bia De Is Caminantes. Once this round circuit has been toured, it is possible to reach the highway at the point of Lake San Sebastiano, in the north of Isili, after skirting the urban center. The Isili-Fadali road runs by the Brabaciera Bridge, which dates back to the imperial days. At the time, the structure, whose name derives from the sixteenth century term Bau Arciera (ford with arches), was about 30 meters high. In the Isili area, another two bridges have been found. One of them had been seriously reworked. This confirms the epigraphic details and documents that prove that the road connecting Karales with Ulbia used to go through the region of Western Sarcidano. Further down the circular route and set amongst the fields, is the Nuraghe Longu. The existence of residential structures and numerous ceramic fragments from historical times supplies further evidence of the frequent reuse of places of Nuragic origin during Roman times. Two kilometers further down this road is the fifteenth-seventeenth century Church of Sant’Antonio di Fadali, found in ruins and later restored and fitted in an equipped green space by the homonymous Nuraghe and village.
We get onto the SS128; a panoramic spot affording an evocative perspective of the lake in the district of Is Barrocus. It is here, in the center of the reservoir, surrounded by water and by no means accessible that we can discover the rural Church of San Sebastiano. At this point, it is recommended to stop by the fascinating Nuraghico village of Monti Arcu, located on a small hill near the disused Sarcidano railway station. The settlement was recovered through a salvage intervention during the construction of the detour to the dam of Is Barroccus. On the way back to town, and now completing a round route, we go down the slope for a sportive climb. From here, the Domus de janas Is Concali de Tzoppus can be reached on foot, 500 meters down an evocative footpath that runs amid vegetated fields. Coming back onto the highway and heading back to the town of Isili, we drive on to the signposted and equipped Nuraghe Is Paras. This is one of the most important nuraghi in the region and stands out for its 13 meter high central tower covered by a tholos dome, which we can visit. Here too, there is evidence of human presence during Roman times.
Back on the SS128 to Nurallao, we go past the vast Roman settlement and necropolis of Sa Bidda Eccia and, once at the crossroads, we progress northeastward along the SS197 up to Nuragus. From here, we move along via Sant’Elia following the road signs for Nuraghe Santu Milanu and the small Pozzo Sacro Coni: both of them had their structures adapted for reuse in Roman times. Not far, (the way is signposted) are the ruins of the pentalobato Nuraghe Valenza, whose construction was probably interrupted before its completion. In the vicinity of the ruins of the medieval church of Santa Maria, built with reused material, excavations confirmed human presence in the area from the Punic era up to the late middle Ages. The bounds and extension of the settlement of Valenza, founded in Roman times, are still unknown: geographer Toloemeo locates it in the Nuragus region. A milestone reminiscent of the repairs on the road built at the behest of the emperors Valentiniano I and Valente was found by the church of Santa Maria, which proves that the Roman road had been in use up to the fourth century AC: the settlement of Valenza had to be relocated along the main road that connected the harbors of Karales and Ulbia. The town of Parte Valenza, built during Roman times, is still documented to have been the seat of Curatoria of the Giudicato of Arborea.
From here, a drive to the dam is recommended; 1.5 km from the settlement of Valenza is the rural Church of Sant’Elia, with evidence of Punic-Roman presence. On the border with Nurallao, beyond a disused segment of railway line is the famous portrait of a giant by Aiodda, housing within its naveform plant (stretched ovoid) numerous ancient statues-menhir.
Having returned then to Nuragus, we proceed further along the SP16 up to Genoni, where a small and raised amphora dominates the settlement. The village is characterized by the nearness to Sa Jara Manna, which has modeled customs and traditions. Here, the breeding of wild dwarf horses great popularity. For that reason, the Horse Museum was inaugurated in the Casa Serra. Progressing northwards, we arrive at the seventeenth century parochial church of Santa Barbara, built with basalt ashlars, and the Ex Monte Granatico, from the following century, nowadays in possession of the Municipality and used as an exhibition hall. In the north of the settlement, we can notice the raised truncated cone of Santu An¬tine, not reflected in the map, where the ruins of a Nuraghe surrounded by the village can be discovered. Less than a kilometer from the town of Genoni, on the left-hand side of the road to Nuragus is the Nuraghe San Pietro, where a famous bronze statue of a horn player was discovered.
