| Translation - English Introduction:
Of the 111,451 diagnostic haemodynamic studies carried out in Spain in 2004, 20.7% (20,244) were by radial access, and 45,469 were surgical procedures, of which 16.3% of them (7.407) were by radial access1. As we can see, despite the increase of radial artery access, the femoral artery continues to be the most used vascular approach, by far, for carrying out haemodynamic studies whether they are diagnostic or therapeutic.
Until the appearance of the femoral artery closure devices in the 1990’s, femoral compression (manual or with devices) was the normal way to achieve post-procedure femoral haemostasis, which was an uncomfortable system for the patient, owing to the long period of immobilisation, and costly from an economical point of view, and also requires at least one day in hospital.
