Navigation aids included the sun and stars but also wave directions and the flight paths of land roosting birds. Modern computer simulations of these voyages, including calculations for currents, winds, storms and traditional navigational capabilities, show a ninety percent success rate across some of the biggest inter-island gaps. And the pay-off for discovering untouched lands was huge – vast colonies of birds and marine animals with no fear of humans – enormous quantities of high protein food, to be taken from the nest and burrow as eggs and chicks. Navigaciona sredstva bila su im sunce i zvezde ali i pravci talasa i ptice koje se vra}aju na legalo na kopno. Moderne kompjuterske simulacije ovih putovawa, ukqu~uju}i prora~une morskij struja, vetrova, oluja i mogu}nosti tradicionalnih na~ina navigacije, pokazuju da su u 90% slu~ajeva uspe{no prelazili i neke od najve}ih razdaqina izme|u dva kopna. A nagrada za otkri}e novih, netaknutih oblasti bila je velika – ~itave kolonije ptica i morskih `ivotiwa koje nisu imale razvijen strah od qudi; ogromne koli~ine hrane bogate belan~evinama, pre svega jaja i mladun~ad, koje je trebalo samo pokupiti iz gnezda i jazbina. Nije iznena|ewe da je i ovde, kao drugde u Novom Svetu, uspeh ~oveka bio povezan sa istrebqavawem `ivotiwskog sveta. |
