35 civilians arrested in Colombo

Sri Lankan armed forces Thursday and Friday arrested thirty-five civilians, majority of them Tamils, in cordon and search operations conducted in Wellawatte, and Vaalaithoddam in Colombo city. Five have been remanded on the orders of the Colombo Magistrate and the others are detained in police station and are being interrogated, police sources said.
Ten civilians were arrested at Vaalaithoddam and three at Wellawatte Friday morning, as they reportedly failed to prove their identity and provide satisfactory reason for their stay in the location.
Most of them were arrested while staying in lodges and with friends' houses, sources said.
Twenty-two civilians were arrested in Wellawatte Thursday and six of them were produced in court and remanded. Others are being detained in police stations for further inquiry, sources said.

Giovedì e venerdì le forze armate dello Sri Lanka hanno arrestato trentacinque civili, in maggioranza Tamil, durante una operazione di ricerca condotta a Wellawatte e Vaalaithoddam, nella città di Colombo. Fonti della polizia rivelano che cinque sono stati rinviati su ordine del Magistrato di Colombo e gli altri sono detenuti alla stazione di polizia per essere interrogati.
Dieci civili sono stati arrestati a Vaalaithoddam e tre a Wellawatte venerdì mattina, dato che non sono stati in grado di provare la loro identità e di fornire motivazioni soddisfacenti per la loro presenza in quel luogo.
Fonti riferiscono che molti di loro sono stati arrestati mentre si trovavano capanne o a casa di amici.
Ventidue civili sono stati arrestati a Wellawatte, giovedì, e sei di questi sono stati portati di fronte alla corte e rinviati. Fonti riferiscono che altri sono detenuti alla stazione di polizia per essere interrogati.
