Der Höhepunkt aber ist das eigentliche Hauptrennen, das zum heimlichen Ruhm der Khampa-Krieger und zur Ehre des Klosters Ganden Tubchen Chokhorling geritten wird. Am Morgen versammeln sich über einhundert Reiter vor den Mauern der Abtei. Die langen Haare sind mit roter Wolle um den Kopf geflochten. Manche von ihnen provozieren die chinesischen Autoritäten, indem sie trotz Verbots gut sichtbar das Bild des XIV. Dalai Lama bei sich tragen und mit ihren nervösen Pferden hautnah an den Ordnungshütern vorbeitänzeln. Den Lama Tense Taji, der in ihrer Mitte reitet, umkreisen sie wie ein Bienenschwarm seine Königin, so als gelte es, ihn vor Anfeindungen zu beschützen.
Erst auf sein Signal hin beginnt das Rennen. Drei Kilometer weit fordern sie von ihren Pferden höchste Leistung. Es kommt zu Massenstürzen. Die, die sich Sattel an Sattel in die vordere Reihe geschoben haben, werden vom Publikum, das die gesamte Rennstrecke säumt, frenetisch angefeuert. Der strahlende Sieger wird vom Lama höchstpersönlich beglückwünscht und erhält als Preis eines der begehrten chromblitzenden Motorräder, eine Art Harley Davidson chinesischer Bauart, die in jüngster Zeit den Nomaden das Pferd ersetzen.
Während des Festes haben die Mönche des Klosters Ganden Tubchen Chokhorling das Mandala aus Sand fertiggestellt. Es ist bunt und wunderschön geworden. Seinen Sinn, die Gottheit Yamantanka einzuladen und das Reiterfest zum Erfolg zu führen, hat sich erfüllt, denn einen Toten hat es dieses Jahr nicht gegeben.
Lama Tense Taji ist zuversichtlich, dass Kham einer Renaissance der buddhistischen Kultur entgegenblickt. Bisher wurden etwa 60 Prozent der Klöster Osttibets, wenn auch unter den strengen Augen der Chinesen, wieder aufgebaut. Der Abt hat einen klaren Geist: "Eine politische Unabhängigkeit Khams oder gar ganz Tibets halte ich für unwahrscheinlich." Der Mönch fühlt sich weniger der Politik als vielmehr der Religion verpflichtet: "Ich bin dazu berufen, die Lehre des Buddha an die Jugend weiterzugeben, solange ich lebe. "Die Klöster Khams", freut sich der Mann, "erwachen zu neuem Leben."

En el transcurso de la festividad los monjes del monasterio Ganden Tubchen Chokhorling han terminado el Mandala de arena: ha resultado una pieza de abigarrado color y bellísima. Y ha cumplido su cometido, que no es otro que hacer partícipe de los festejos a la deidad Yamantanka y asegurar además el éxito del festival ecuestre, ya que este año no ha habido que lamentar muertes.
El Lama Tense Taji cree firmemente que Kham se encamina hacia un renacimiento de la cultura budista. Hasta la fecha se ha reconstruido cerca del 60% de los monasterios del Tíbet Oriental, si bien bajo el riguroso control de los chinos. Pero el abad es un hombre de juicio: “Considero improbable la independencia política de Kham, por no hablar de la del Tíbet”. Este monje se siente más comprometido con la religión que con la política. “Me siento llamado a transmitir el mensaje de Buda a nuestros jóvenes mientras viva”. Y añade con alegría: “Los monasterios de Kham están despertando a un nuevo esplendor”.

A year which began with optimism ends in the harsh glare of reality

This was the year the shadow fell. Perhaps we didn't allow ourselves to notice it, but some fin de siècle optimism, even idealism, had seeped into the collective bloodstream during the 90s.
We branded the decade a new era of caring and sharing, an antidote to the avarice and excess of the 80s. By 1997 the country seemed ready for a fresh start and more upbeat about itself than at any time since the 60s: we declared Britannia cool. But in the year 2000 we seem to have had a reality check - to have remembered that every light comes with shade.
Of course the most glaring symbol of the contrast is the dome. It was dreamed up as the incarnation of millennial confidence and hope: instead, it became a monument to British incompetence, vanity and a system of power which allows our governing politicians to make mistake after mistake with no scrutiny until it is too late.
The dome symbolised a more specific fall from grace, too. For the shambolic scenes in Greenwich last New Year's Eve marked the beginning of deep trouble not only for the big tent in east London but also for the big tent known as the Labour party.
Just as the dome was born of shining 90s optimism, only to be felled by a dose of 21st-century realism, so New Labour endured the same fate. The year 2000 was truly an annus horribilis for Tony Blair and his party. From the drubbing the government received last December 31 onwards, this year has been a series of kicks, dents and holes drilled into the once-gleaming façade of New Labour.
Perhaps the decisive vandal was Ken Livingstone, whose humiliation of Frank Dobson in the London mayoral contest was hailed as the lowest point of the Blair premiership (little did we know what was to follow). It exposed to public view what had long been the fatal flaw of New Labour: its control freakery, its tin ear for democracy, its contempt for dissent.
The bloom kept fading from the New Labour rose. If it wasn't a leaked memo from the PM's own pen - revealing him as no less scheming, calculating and image-conscious than any other politician - it was the poison that dripped from Andrew Rawnsley's book, which cast the Labour top table as a vipers' nest.

Este ha sido el año en el que se disiparon las sombras. Quizás no quisiésemos percibirlo, pero un optimismo de fin de siglo, incluso idealismo, se había colado en nuestra conciencia colectiva durante los 90.
Le dimos a la década el marchamo de la humanidad y solidaridad, un antídoto contra la avaricia y el exceso de los 80. Hacia 1997 el país parecía preparado para un nuevo comienzo y más optimismo respecto a sí mismo que en cualquier otro periodo desde los 60: declaramos que Gran Bretaña tenía gancho. Pero en el año 2000 parece que nos dimos de bruces con la realidad y recordamos que no hay luz que no proyecte su sombra.
Desde luego, el símbolo más deslumbrante del contraste es el Millenium Dome. Concebido como la encarnación de la confianza y esperanza milenarias, terminó por convertirse en un monumento a la incompetencia británica, a la vanidad y a un sistema de poder que permite a nuestros gobernantes cometer error tras error sin control hasta que ya es demasiado tarde.
El Dome simboliza también una caída en desgracia más concreta. Y es que las caóticas escenas de fin de año en Greenwich marcaron el comienzo de serios problemas no solo para esa carpa gigante del este de Londres que es el Dome, sino igualmente para ese otro gran circo conocido como Partido Laborista.
Precisamente cuando el Dome nació como símbolo del resplandeciente optimismo de los 90, solo para verse abrumado por una dosis de realismo del siglo XXI, el Nuevo Laborismo tuvo que padecer el mismo destino. El año 2000 fue ciertamente un annus horribilis para Tony Blair y su partido. Desde el varapalo que el Gobierno recibió desde el pasado 31 de diciembre en adelante, este año se ha convertido en una serie de patadas, golpes y agujeros practicados en la antaño lustrosa fachada del Nuevo Laborismo.
Quizás el gamberro determinante haya sido Ken Livingstone, cuya humillación electoral a Frank Dobson en las elecciones a la alcaldía fue aclamada como el momento en el que el mandato de Blair tocó fondo (desde luego, no podíamos prever lo que vendría después). Aquello expuso ante la mirada pública lo que durante mucho tiempo había sido el error fatal del Nuevo Laborismo: su obsesión por el control, su falta de sentido democrático, su desprecio de la divergencia.
La rosa del Nuevo Laborismo siguió perdiendo su lozanía. Si no se trataba de una filtración salida de la pluma de un miembro del Parlamento, destapándole como no menos maquinador, calculador y ególatra que cualquier otro político, era entonces el veneno que chorreaba del libro de Andrew Rawnsley, que presentó la cúpula del Laborismo como un nido de víboras.
