In strict terms, heritage is always about passivity. It is something we receive along with our ancestry, or ourplace of birth, or our pesumed race, a result of who we are, not of anything we do. Or it is something reserved for us at a future time, like the "goodly heritage" in the Bible. Suggestively, heritage in the past could even mean the people chosen by God. But in dictionaries we cannot choose our own heritage, any more than we can manufacture it. Except, of course, that we do both. | Translation - Dutch
Strikt genomen gaat erfgoed gepaard met passiviteit. Erfgoed krijgen we mee van onze voorouders, het wordt door onze geboorteplaats bepaald, of hangt af van ons verondersteld ras. Erfgoed is het resultaat van wat we zijn en niet van wat we doen. Het kan ook voor onze toekomst weggelegd zijn, zoals het "tot ons varend erfgoed" uit de Bijbel. In het verleden, zo wordt tenminste aangenomen, kon met erfgoed zelfs de uitverkorenen van God bedoeld worden. Maar volgens het boekje kunnen we ons eigen erfgoed niet kiezen, en nog minder kunnen we het zelf vervaardigen. Ook al doen we dat natuurlijk wel. |
