Do you know?
~ Whooping cough (pertussis) cases are happening more often in Texas than in the past 40 years.
~ 88 cases of whooping cough - Denton County in 2005 (27 in 2004)
~ Infants are at highest risk for Whooping cough and can die from it
~ Children who have not been vaccinated or who have not completed their vaccinations (DTP/DTaP) for Pertussis/Whooping Cough are also at very high risk.
~ Most Whooping cough is spread from adults to children
What is Whooping cough?
It is a respiratory infection caused by bacteria that is easily spread from person to person from droplets in the air. It is spread easily in the same household, day care centers or schools.
It is a cough that lasts at least 2 weeks with severe cough that sometimes sounds like a “whoop” when a person breathes air in.
The person may throw-up (vomit) after coughing.
Whooping cough takes about 7-10 days to “incubate” or “grow” into infection (but can take from 4 to 21 days). It can last & infect others for months.
Infants and children have caught the whooping cough mostly from adults who have it. Adults are often not immune to whooping cough and their doctor may not suspect they have it or they don’t see a doctor for mild symptoms.
SYMPTOMS
Stage 1: Runny nose, sneezing, low fever and a mild cough for 1-2 weeks. (Most easily spread during this stage.)
Stage 2: 1-6 weeks: Long spasms of rapid coughs, often with “whoops” when the person gasps for air.
Vomiting often follows the cough.
Breathing may stop or almost stop for a short time.
In between coughs, the person feels fine.
Stage 3: Coughing spells are less often for 2-3 weeks up to months.

¿Sabe usted?

Absorption: Atorvastatin is rapidly absorbed after oral administration; maximum plasma concentrations occur within 1 to 2 hours. Extent of absorption increases in proportion to atorvastatin dose. The absolute bioavailability of atorvastatin (parent drug) is approximately 14% and the systemic availability of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitory activity is approximately 30%. The low systemic availability is attributed to presystemic clearance in gastrointestinal mucosa and/or hepatic first-pass metabolism. Although food decreases the rate and extent of drug absorption by approximately 25% and 9%, respectively, as assessed by Cmax and AUC, LDL-C reduction is similar whether atorvastatin is given with or without food. Plasma atorvastatin concentrations are lower (approximately 30% for Cmax and AUC) following evening drug administration compared with morning. However, LDL-C reduction is the same regardless of the time of day of drug administration.

| | English to Spanish: Traumatology | Source text - English In an arthritic hip
Most approaches to the hip are done with the patients lying on their side. When you are asleep you are positioned in a special brace that stabilises your pelvis and keeps you on your side. An incision is made along the side of your hip joint and the muscles carefully split and divided to expose the hip joint.
The worn out joint is exposed and the femoral head is resected. This allows visualisation of the acetabulum (socket). The socket is then cleared of debris and a reamer is inserted to appropriately fashion the socket to accept the artificial acetabular component.
After reaming is complete, the artificial socket is inserted. There are two types of sockets, (a) a cemented socket or (b) an uncemented socket. A cemented socket is cemented into the bone and an uncemented socket allows bone to grow into it. Your surgeon will advise you which is the most appropriate socket for your bone quality.
