Durante la Guerra de la Independencia la ciudad de Zaragoza sufrió dos asedios por parte del ejército francés. Al terminar el primero, que duró del 14 de junio al 14 de agosto de 1808, su defensor, el general Palafox, invitó a varios artistas a visitar la devastación causada por los bombardeos sobre los principales monumentos de la ciudad, "con el fin de pintar las glorias de aquellos naturales". Entre esos artistas estaban Francisco de Goya, Fernando Brambila y Juan Calvez. Estos dos últimos dibujaron aquellas ruinas del natural en octubre de 1808,- y al volver a Madrid comenzaron a grabar los cobres de doce grandes vistas con los daños sobre los principales edificios de la ciudad. Después harían otras doce medianas de ruinas de diferente género y otras doce más pequeñas de los defensores más destacados. La edición se realizó durante 1812 en Cádiz donde la Academia de Bellas Artes asumió el proyecto de edición,- y las estampas aparecieron por entregas que incluían una de cada tamaño.
Sin embargo, Goya comenzó los primeros dibujos preparatorios un año después de esa visita, con objeto de grabar un conjunto de láminas sobre el tema de los horrores de la guerra. En la serie de Los Desastres pueden diferenciarse tres partes. En la primera Goya pone imágenes a relatos de acontecimientos reales y con veracidad probada,- pero en todas estas estampas procura trascender los hechos concretos, generalizándolos para extractar una conciencia crítica. En la segunda parte reinterpreta sus vivencias de la guerra desde las calles de Madrid, con los horrores del año del hambre, describiendo la presencia de la guerra a través de sus consecuencias en la vida cotidiana. Por último, dedica unas estampas en claves simbólicas, a las que llama caprichos enfáticos. En ellas Goya expone las consecuencias políticas de la posguerra con sus críticas a la instauración del absolutismo y a la ruptura de los ideales constitucionales. Denuncia la inutilidad del sacrificio, originado por una guerra en la que los inmovilistas apelaron al patriotismo del pueblo, y las clases dirigentes no dudaron en utilizar la sangre de inocentes para afirmar sus privilegios.
Esta obra de Goya tiene pocos precedentes en la historia del arte,- pues la guerra ha sido un motivo que había sido utilizado por los artistas por encargo del los estamentos del poder, que por supuesto no admitían críticas a sus acciones de batalla. Pero incluso cuando el artista escogía de forma privada estos motivos, siempre lo hacía atraído por razones plásticas, pues le interesaba resolver un problema de fuerzas contrapuestas y choque de pasiones. En un raro repertorio de modelos para artistas titulado Scelta ai Bataglie invéntate, e disetjnate da Francesco Antonio Simonini, e da altri celebri Autori per uso de Pittorí, e Dilettanti, que reúne treinta y tres estampas de escenas de batallas, queda manifiesto esta idea.
Pocas veces la guerra fue escogida como objeto de denuncia, y las dos únicas excepciones pudieran ser el grabador francés Jacques Callot y el alemán Hans Ulrich Franck. Callot grabó dos pequeñas series, llamadas Les Petites Mise'res grabadas en 1632 y no publicadas hasta 1636 y otra un poco más amplia titulada Les Miséres et Malheurs de la guerre. Son dieciocho aguafuertes sobre la ocupación de Lorena por los franceses en 1630, en el transcurso de la Guerra de los Treinta Años y donde muestra las crueldades del ejército y la venganza de los civiles sobre los soldados, además de escenas de tortura y ejecución, pillaje y violaciones. During the War of Independence, the city of Saragossa suffered two sieges at the hands of the French army. At the end of the first, which lasted from 14th June to 14th August 1808, the city's defender, General Palafox, invited several artists to visit the devastation caused by the bombardment upon the main monuments and buildings of the city, "in order to paint their glory from life". Among these artists were Francisco de Goya, Fernando Brambila and Juan Calvez. These last two drew those ruins from life in October 1808, and upon their return to Madrid began to etch the copper plates for twelve large-format views, depicting the damage to the city's most important buildings. Afterwards, they were to make twelve more, medium-sized plates of different ruins and another twelve smaller ones of the most important figures from the defending forces. The images were published in 1812 in Cádiz, where the Academia de Bellas Artes took on the publishing projects, and the prints appeared in instalments, each including one image in each of the three sizes.
However, Goya did not begin work on his first preparatory drawings until a year after the visit, with the intention of etching a set of prints on the theme of the horrors of war. In 1810 he began work on the first of the 82 plates that comprise the series. But his dedication to this project had to be shared with other works, and the last matrices were not finished until around 1820. During the process, he made several test proofs - found today in collections all over the world - and apparently only printed three complete volumes with the definitive finished plates, leaving the publishing project abandoned. That is until 1862, when the Academia de San Fernando acquired 80 of these matrices, using them to make the first proper edition in 1863. In 1870, the two missing matrices were donated by Paul Lefort, but were not included in any successive edition until 1963, when an entirely new print was made.
The series of Los Desastres can be split into three parts. In the first, Goya illustrates stories of real-life events; those for which reliable evidence was available. But even in these prints he attempts to transcend the concrete facts, generalising them in order to extract a critical conscience. In the second part he reinterprets his own experiences of war on the streets of Madrid, with the horrors of the año del hambre (year of hunger), describing the presence of the war through its consequences on daily life. Lastly, the artist's "caprichos enfáticos" (emphatic caprices) make abundant use of symbolism and allegory to get their message across. In these images, Goya exposes the political consequences of the period following the war, criticising the establishment of absolutism and the break-up of constitutional ideals. He denounces the uselessness of sacrifice, originating from a war in which the ultraconservatives appealed to the patriotism of the people, and the upper classes did not hesitate to use the blood of the innocent to affirm their privileges.
This work by Goya has few precedents in the history of art. Before, war had only been used as a subject by artists commissioned by the governing classes, who of course did not welcome critiques of their actions on the battlefield. But even when an artist took up these themes in private, he always did so for visual reasons, being drawn to the challenge of solving a problem of opposing forces and the clash of passions. In a rare catalogue of artists' models, entitled "Scelta ai Bataglie invéntate, e disetjnate da Francesco Antonio Simonini, e da altri celebri Autori per uso de Pittorí, e Dilettanti", which brings together thirty-three prints of battle scenes, this idea is made clear.
War was rarely chosen as the object of condemnation, and the two most recent exceptions may have been the French engraver Jacques Callot and the German Hans Ulrich Franck. Callot made two small series, named "Les Petites Misères" - printed in 1632 and not published until 1636 - and another, slightly larger one, entitled "Les Misères et Malheurs de la guerre". These are eighteen etchings on the French occupation of Lorena in 1630, during the course of the Thirty Years War, which show the cruelties of the army and the subsequent revenge of the civilians over the soldiers, in addition to scenes of torture and execution, pillaging and rape. However, the reduced format of the plates and the large number of miniscule figures that appear in each one minimize the visual effect of the cruelty of the actions taking place. Sus envidiables playas y su clima cálido la convirtieron en la capital turística de la Costa Blanca en los 60. Casi cuatro décadas después, merece una mirada renovada.
Si nos acercamos hoy a Benidorm y detenemos la mirada en su paseo marítimo, vemos esa impresionante colección de rascacielos que en algún momento se ha llegado a llamar Coloso del turismo e incluso Beniyork. Ante esa estampa, cuesta imaginar que en un pasado no tan remoto, a principios del siglo XX y con sólo 3.500 habitantes, este enclave fuera un pueblecito de pescadores dedicado a la captura de atunes y al cultivo de los campos.
Pero unas décadas después, contribuyendo a desencadenar el boom turístico de la península y con el beneplácito de sus habitantes, aquel pueblecito de pescadores, de clima privilegiado, protegido del viento del norte por la Sierra Helada, de bajísima índice pluviométrico y de playas larguísimas que miran hacia el sur, se convirtió, a finales de los 50, en el destino preferido de número espectacular de turistas.
El proyecto urbanístico de Benidorm, tan alejado entonces de nuestra cultura estética, desató pasiones y odios. Pero el caso es que este epicentro turístico de Levante cumplió su función y se convirtió en el sueño estival de miles de turistas nacionales y extranjeros que, seducidos por el reclamo del sol, playa y diversiones "a gogó", acudían a satisfacer sus ansias veraniegas. Y continuó evolucionando hasta saciar también las necesidades de los más pequeños y de los amantes de parques temáticos.
Voces en todas las lenguas
Hoy en día, en el casco antiguo, las voces y las cadencias se mezclan, las diferentes lenguas evocan una lejana Babel, mientras el inglés escrito coloniza a su paso carteles, menús y variados programas. La herencia de un pasado musulmán pervive no sólo en el nombre, Benidorm, sino también en el trazado árabe de las blancas y estrechas callejuelas del centro, que contrasta con el abundante arquitectura vertical, una especie de skyline al más puro estilo americano, que se extiende hasta orillas del mar y parece mecerse con la brisa marina. En el centro de la zona vieja y rodeado de una imponente barandilla de piedra blanca, el Mirador de la Puente de Canfall permite observar la forma de arco de la bahía, que queda resguardada de las inclemencias del tiempo por las sierras colindantes. Ahí nacen las dos playas más importantes de Benidorm, la de Levante, con casi 3 kilómetros de extensión, y la de Poniente, la preferida por ser una de las playas con más horas de sol, al quedar más alejada de los altos edificios que le podrían hacer sombra.
Y frente a la costa, la Isla de Benidorm o Islote de los Periodistas, acoge, en sus 700 metros de longitud, a numerosas golondrinas marinas, pavos reales y gallinas, únicos habitantes privilegiados de un rincón natural que conserva en medida su estado salvaje ante una población que atrae como un imán a gentes del mundo entero. Its superb beaches and warm climate made it the tourism capital of the Costa Blanca in the 60s. Now, nearly four decades later, Benidorm deserves a fresh look.
If we take a trip to Benidorm today and stop to look at its seafront, we see that impressive collection of skyscrapers that has earned the city such names as 'The Colossus of Tourism' and even 'Beniyork'. Faced with a view such as this one, it's difficult to imagine that in a not-so-distant past, at the beginning of the 20th century, this was a little fishing village, with practically all of its 3,500 inhabitants dedicated to catching tuna and working the land.
But just a few decades later, contributing to the triggering of the peninsula's tourism boom and with the blessing of its small population, that same little fishing village, with its privileged climate - protected from the northern winds by the mountains of the Sierra Helada - its very low rainfall and its seemingly never-ending south-facing beaches, became, at the end of the 50s, the destination of choice for a huge number of tourists.
Benidorm's town planning, so alien to Spain's aesthetic culture back then, provoked passionate reactions and even loathing. But this Levantine tourism hub did the job asked of it and turned itself into the holiday dream of thousands of tourists, both Spanish and from abroad. Seduced by the lure of sun, sand and fun "a go-go", they came in their droves to satisfy their summer-time longings. And Benidorm continued to evolve, to meet the demands of the smallest members of the family and of theme-park thrill seekers.
Voices in every language
Today, in the city's old quarter, the voices and melodies of a multitude of different languages mix together, conjuring up images of a distant Babel, whilst written English steadily colonizes signs, menus and anything else in its path. The inheritance of its Muslim past survives not only in the city's name, Benidorm, but also in the Arabic layout of the narrow, whitewashed alleys of its centre, which contrast with the abundant vertical architecture, the American-style skyline that extends to the sea shore and seems to sway with the sea breeze. In the heart of the old quarter, and surrounded by an imposing barrier of white stone, the Mirador de la Puente de Canfall viewpoint lets visitors see the arched shape of the bay, which is sheltered from bad weather by the neighbouring mountains. This is where two of Benidorm's most important beaches begin: that of Levante, nearly 3 kilometres long, and that of Poniente, the more popular of the two since it is one of the beaches that receives the most hours of sunlight, sitting further away as it does from the tall buildings that could otherwise cast their shadows on it.
And, opposite the coast, stands the Island of Benidorm, or Isle of the Journalists. This small outcropping, only 700 metres long, is home to numerous sea swallows, peacocks and hens, the unique, privileged inhabitants of a natural oasis that has managed to conserve almost perfectly its wild state right on the doorstep of a city which attracts people from every corner of the world like a magnet.
