The University of Melbourne consistently heads the national research performance rankings for Australia. Research activity has included diverse developments such as: the world famous bionic ear; the discovery of genes that can cause heart attacks; agreement amongst Australian scientists regarding the age of Mungo Man (the oldest known human remains in Australia); a diagnostic test which will help safeguard the Australian lentil industry from a devastating disease; and a radical new theory relating to life on the Planet Mars.

The University has extensive links with industry, government, and other institutions. It is a core participant in 18 and a supporting participant in four of the Cooperative Research Centres funded by the Australian Government to foster closer working links between academia and industry. These involve research in the following areas: Manufacturing Technology; Information and Communication Technology; Mining and Energy; Agriculture and Rural Based Manufacturing; Environment: and Medical Science and Technology.
