A fines de 2000, los conocedores se sorprendían cuando un vino desconocido –el Solaia 1997– era elegido como mejor del año por la influyente publicación Wine Spectator. La sorpresa crecía al saber que este italiano se basaba en la Sangiovese local y en la foránea Cabernet Sauvignon, una cepa casi inexistente en Italia. Pero el asombro aumentaba más aún, porque el vino se presentaba como “vino da tavola”, es decir, vino común.
Es que hacía unos años Piero y Ludovico Antinori, integrantes de una familia vitivinícola de la Toscana por más de 600 años, habían comenzado a implantar cepas bordelesas para elaborar vinos de gran estilo. Pero al ser foráneas y no reconocidas por la Denominación de Origen toscana, la etiqueta de estos vinos, sólo podía llevar la apelación “vino da tavola”.
Sin embargo, el mundo vitivinícola reconociendo su calidad los bautizó “súper toscanos”, denominación con la que hoy se los identifica. Al año siguiente, otro “súper toscano” de los Antinori, quedó como mejor vino por la revista: el Ornellaia 1998 un corte de Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot y Cabernet Franc.
Sin embargo, el más grande de todos estos nuevos vinos, el Masseto, no había alcanzado todavía ni el esplendor ni la fama que hoy exhibe con orgullo. Nació casi por casualidad cuando una de las parcelas de siete hectáreas implantada con Merlot, demostró una calidad enológica tan excepcional que se decidió vinificarla por separado.
La elección del “terroir” se debió a André Thcelicheff (ruso-americano) quién decidió que esa parcela era ideal, por su suelo calizo, y su clima templado de la Toscana marítima, en la región de Bolgheri, para que el Merlot expresara toda su elegancia,
Con el título de Masseto la historia de un gran “cru” de Bolgheri, se llevo a cabo durante la Vinexpo –realizada en Burdeos, Francia– una degustación de este excepcional vino que abarco 14 cosechas. La mesa estuvo presidida por el Marqués de Frescobaldi, su actual propietario, y los comentarios estuvieron a cargo de Michel Rolland consultante de primera hora de la bodega, quien se definió, más que como consultante, como “guardián del templo de este gran vino”. También aportaron sus puntos de vista Alex Heinz, su actual enólogo y un periodista de la revista Gambero Rosso Vini d´ Italia. Los vinos fueron servidos de botellas magnum que habían sido guardadas en la propia bodega.
La primera sorpresa fue la forma en que se degustaron los vinos. En lugar de seguir la regla cronológica tradicional, del más joven al más viejo o viceversa, los vinos se ordenaron presentando las primeras cosechas (1987, 1990 y 1994), luego los pertenecientes a los años difíciles (2002, 2003 y 2005), seguidos por los vinos que se deben consumir ya (1995, 1997, 1998 y 2000) y por último, se presentaron los “milestones” correspondientes a las cosechas 1999, 2001, 2004 y 2006, donde el vino alcanzó su máxima expresión.
Para cada cosecha se describió la situación climática durante la temporada, cómo se condujo la cosecha, y las particularidades de la elaboración atendiendo a la calidad de la fruta obtenida, ya que el Masseto se produce siempre, aun en los años difíciles. Michel Rolland fue explicando para cada año cómo se condujo la elaboración, por qué se acortaron o alargaron las maceraciones, cómo se decidió el tiempo de permanencia en barricas, y todas las particularidades y vicisitudes de cada elaboración, partiendo de la consigna de “no hacer lo que no permite la cosecha”. La degustación estuvo matizada por jugosas anécdotas que hicieron las delicias de los presentes.
Independientemente de las diferencias en cuanto a la calidad de las cosechas presentadas, la degustación mostró que se trata de un vino excepcional, donde se conjuga concentración y elegancia, con una enorme capacidad de guarda, cuyo potencial comenzó a revelarse en los últimos años y su límite aún no se conoce.

Trascribimos nuestras notas de cata, con las impresiones, casi telegráficas, tal y como garabateamos al correr de la pluma, durante la degustación, de las mejores cosechas. Incluimos como referencia los puntajes otorgados a las mismas por Winespectator (WS) y Robert Parker (RP).
Cosecha 1999
(WS 95, RP 95). Vino cargado de fruta y notas especiadas, redondo, complejo, denso, delicado, fresco, no parece tener diez años de vida. Excelente. Permanece en la boca por un tiempo que parece interminable.
Cosecha 2001
(WS 100. RP 97) Una maravilla. ¿La perfección? Sorprendentemente equilibrado a pesar de su concentración y potencia. Taninos maduros y una frescura que hace dudar sobre sus 14,5 % de alcohol. Refinado. Final largo y cargado de fruta.
Cosecha 2004
(WS 98, RP 97) Nuevamente la elegancia y la concentración. Fruta en estado puro y roble de gran calidad, especies, tabaco. Paladar redondo y larguísimo final. Un vino clásico. Para consumir hasta 2030.
Cosecha 2006
Aun en bodega (RP 99). El vino más concentrado y potente de la serie. Casi negro, cubierto, pleno de fruta madura. Elegante. ¿Cuánto puede vivir? Absolutamente seductor. ¿Se puede esperar más de un vino?

Towards the end of 2000, the connoisseurs were surprised when an unknown wine -the 1997 Solain- was chosen as the best wine of the year by the influential publication Wine Spectator. Even more surprising was the fact that this Italian wine was based on the local Sangiovese and on the foreign Cabernet Sauvignon, an almost nonexistent vine in Italy. It also causes much amazement to discover that the wine was presented as a “vino da tavola”, i.e. an ordinary wine. Some years ago, Piero and Ludovico Antinori, members of a viti-vinicultural family from the Tuscany region for more than 600 years had begun to plant Bordeaux vines to make wines of great style. Due to the fact that they were foreign and not recognized by the Tuscan Designation of Origin, the label of these wines could only be “vino da tavola”.
However, the viti-vinicultural world acknowledging their quality, named them “Super Tuscans” as they are identified nowadays. The following year, another “Super Tuscan” of Antinori; The Ornellaia 1998, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, was considered the best wine by the magazine.
Nevertheless, the greatest of all these wines, the Masseto, hadn’t reached yet neither the bright nor the fame that today proudly shows. It was born almost by chance, when a single vineyard of seven hectares planted with Merlot showed an exceptional oenological quality. It was therefore decided to vinify it separately.
The choice of the “terroir” is owed to André Thcelicheff (Russian-American) who thought that such vineyard was ideal to let the Merlot display its elegance due to its chalky soil and the warm weather of the maritime Tuscany in the region of Bolgheri.
Under the title: “Masseto, the history of a grand cru of Bolgheri” a tasting of this exceptional wine that covered 14 vintages was carried out at Vinexpo, held in Bordeaux-France. It was chaired by the Marquis Frescobaldi, the current owner, and feedback was provided by Michel Rolland, first class consultant of the wine cellar who didn’t define himself as a consultant but as “the guardian of the temple of this great wine”. Alex Heinz, the current oenologist and a journalist from the magazine Gambero Rosso Vini d´Italia also provided their points of view. The wines were served from magnum bottles which had been kept in the wine cellar.
The first surprise was the way the wines were tasted. Instead of following the chronological and traditional rule: i.e. from the younger wines to the older ones or vice versa, they were arranged differently: the first vintages were showed first (1987, 1990 and 1994), then the ones from the difficult years (2002, 2003 and 2005) followed by the wines that must be drunk now (1995, 1997, 1998 and 2000) and finally the “milestones” from the 1999, 2001, 2004 and 2006 vintages, where the wine reached its zenith.
There was a description of the climate conditions for the season regarding each vintage, the way they were carried out, and the special features of the production focusing on the quality of the fruit obtained. Masetto is produced at all times, even in difficult times.
Michel Rolland explained how the production was conducted each year, why the macerations were shorter or longer, the way it was decided the time the wine had to be kept in the barrels and all the difficulties throughout the elaboration under the motto “avoid doing what the harvest does not let you do”.
The tasting was enriched by juicy anecdotes that delighted the attendees.
Apart from the differences concerning the quality of the vintages exhibited, the tasting showed that it is an exceptional wine that combines concentration and elegance, with great storage time whose potential started to reveal last year and its limit is still unknown.

1999 Vintage
(WS 95, RP 95)
This wine, loaded with fruit and spicy notes, is round, complex, dense, delicate, and fresh. It doesn’t seem to be 10 years old. It’s an excellent wine that lasts on the palate for an endless time.
2001 Vintage
(WS 100, RP 97)
This is a wonderful wine. Perfection? It’s surprisingly balanced in spite of being concentrated and powerful. Ripe tannins and a freshness that makes everyone wonder about its 14, 5% of alcohol. Refined. Long finish loaded with fruit.
2004 Vintage
(WS 98, RP 97)
Elegance and concentration emerge again. Pure fruit and high quality oak, spices, tobacco. Round palate and very long finish. A classic wine to taste up to the year 2030.
2006 Vintage
Still in wine cellar (RP 99). The most powerful and concentrated wine of the series. Almost black, deep, full of ripe fruits. Elegant. How long can it live? Completely captivating …Can you expect more from a wine?
