Information about the diseases
Diphtheria is a serious disease that causes severe breathing difficulties, heart failure and nerve damage.
Tetanus is a severe, often fatal disease caused by bacterium found in soil. The person suffers severe painful muscle spasms, convulsions and lockjaw. Even with modern intensive care about 1 in 10 people will die.
Pertussis (whooping cough) is a highly infectious bacterial disease that causes bouts of coughing. Adolescents and adults can have an annoying cough for up to 3 months. Severe bouts of coughing can cause vomiting, rib fractures, rupture of small blood vessels and hernias. About 1 in 200 babies aged less than 6 months who get whooping cough from an infected person die from pneumonia or brain damage.
Side effects of diphtheria, tetanus & pertussis vaccine
Serious side effects (such as anaphylaxis) are very rare. Reactions to this vaccine are much less common than those that may have occurred with the old Triple Antigen Vaccine.
The most common side effects of the vaccination are local reactions such as pain, redness and swelling at the injection site. Other side effects include fatigue, headache and dizziness.
What to do if reactions do occur
A cold damp cloth on the sore spot may help to relieve pain and tenderness. Paracetamol may be given for pain. Give extra fluids to drink.

معلومات عن الأمراض
الدفتيريا مرض خطير يسبب صعوبات حادة في التنفس وقصور القلب وتلفاً عصبياً.
الكزاز مرض خطير ومميت في الغالب، تسببه جرثومة تتواجد في التربة ويعاني المصاب به من تقلصات عضلية حادة ومؤلمة وتشنجات وكزاز الفك. وحتى مع تلقّي عناية حديثة ومكثفة فإنه يتوفى حوالي شخص واحد من كل عشرة أشخاص يصابون بالمرض.
الشاهوق (السعال الديكي) مرض بكتيري معدٍ بصورة بالغة يسبب نوبات من السعال. ويمكن أن يعاني المراهقون والبالغون المصابون به من سعال مزعج لمدة تصل إلى 3 أشهر، كما يمكن أن تسبب نوبات السعال الحادة التقيّؤ وكسوراً في الضلوع وتمزق الأوعية الدموية الصغيرة والفتق. ويتوفى من جراء ذات الرئة أو تلف المخ حوالي رضيع واحد من كل 200 رضيع سنّه أقل من 6 أشهر ممن يلتقطون السعال الديكي من شخص مصاب به.
التأثيرات الجانبية للقاح الدفتيريا والكزاز والشاهوق
التأثيرات الجانبية الخطيرة (كالإعوار أو الحساسية المفرطة) نادرة جداً. وردود الفعل إثر هذا اللقاح أقل شيوعاً بكثير من تلك التي كان يحتمل حدوثها إثر اللقاح الثلاثي القديم.
وأكثر التأثيرات الجانبية شيوعاً بعد التلقيح هي ردود الفعل الموضعية كالألم والاحمرار والتورم في موضع الحقن. وتشمل التأثيرات الجانبية الأخرى الإعياء والصداع والدوار.
كيفية التصرف عند حدوث ردود فعل
قد يساعد وضع قطعة قماش مبللة على الموضع المؤلم في تخفيف الألم والوجع عند اللمس، ويمكن إعطاء باراسيتامول لتسكين الألم. أعطِ سوائل إضافية للشرب.
