New research from XXXX reveals that while European consumers are environmentally conscious, financial cost is even more important when it comes to managing energy consumption. The study shows that the threat of higher energy prices is the most important factor influencing people in taking steps to reduce the amount of energy they consume at home. Overall, a combination of financial costs, environmental concerns and better information – enabled by the right technology - would lead to a change in energy consumer behaviour.
When asked about whether or not they were worried about climate change, a substantial 80 per cent of European respondents said that they were very concerned. But how does this translate into direct action taken to save energy in the home? 81 per cent of European consumers surveyed said that they take action at least once per week and 65 per cent at least once per day. But despite high numbers of consumers stating that they are already ‘doing their bit’, the study reveals that some people think they can do even more to reduce the amount of energy they consume in the home. When asked why they don’t, a third of people (36 per cent) admitted that they are concerned about the expense required to invest in energy saving measures.

With the end of the Cold War, the former Soviet Union and its allies, as well as China, India, and Latin America, opened their closed markets to foreign investment in a cascading fashion. Although this significant economic and social transformation has offered vast new growth opportunities for multinational corporations (MNCs), its promise has yet to be realized.
First, the prospect of millions of “middle-class” consumers in developing countries, clamoring for products from MNCs, was wildly oversold. To make matters worse, the Asian and Latin American financial crises have greatly diminished the attractiveness of emerging markets. As a consequence, many MNCs worldwide slowed investments and began to rethink risk–reward structures for these markets. This retreat could become
even more pronounced in the wake of the terrorist attacks in the United States last September.
The lackluster nature of most MNCs’ emerging-market strategies over the past decade does not change the magnitude of the opportunity, which is in reality much larger than previously thought. The real source of market promise is not the wealthy few in the developing world, or even the emerging middle-income consumers: It is the billions of aspiring poor who are joining the market economy for the first time.
This is a time for MNCs to look at globalization strategies through a new lens of inclusive capitalism. For companies with the resources and persistence to compete at the bottom of the world economic pyramid, the prospective rewards include growth, profits, and incalculable contributions to humankind. Countries that still don’t have the modern infrastructure or products to meet basic human needs are an ideal testing ground for developing environmentally sustainable technologies and products for the entire world.

Com o fim da Guerra Fria, a ex-União Soviética e seus aliados, assim como China, Índia, e América Latina, abriram seus mercados fechados ao investimento estrangeiro em forma de cascata. Embora essa significativa transformação social e econômica tenha oferecido muitas novas oportunidades de crescimento para corporações multinacionais (CMNs), sua promessa ainda está por se realizar.
Primeiro, a expectativa de milhões de consumidores de “classe média” nos países em desenvolvimento, clamando por produtos das CMNs, foi muito superestimada. Para tornar as coisas piores, a crise financeira da Ásia e América Latina diminuiu muita a atratividade dos mercados emergentes.
