Attacks by insects and diseases are scientifically named “biotic stress”. If plants are cultivated under dry conditions (drought) or in soil with a high salt content (high salinity) they are said to be exposed to abiotic stress.
Soil salinity is an important agricultural problem, at least 20% of world's arable land and more than 40% of irrigated lands are affected by salinity stress. Therefore the identification of the salt stress responsive genes or salt tolerance genes is essential for breeding programs. This is a complex matter because the capacity of the plants for resisting abiotic stress is not related to one single gene. Resistance to drought and salinity is of a multigenetic nature.
Our partner from Mexico and her co-workers dedicated their efforts to the investigations of the genetic background for abiotic stress in A. hypochondriacus. Due to the multigenetic nature of this trait, such investigations must be based on a protein analysis.
In this figure the results of the protein analysis show the differences between protein amounts in control plants and stressed plants. 22 different proteins were analyzed. In some cases proteins were upregulated due to drought stress (for instance protein numbers 6, 7 and 13), while other proteins were downregulated due to stress (for instance protein numbers 1 and 20).
Most of these proteins were identified by our partner and her co-workers. With this the possibilities of breeding towards improved abiotic stress have now come closer. | Translation - Spanish
Los ataques de insectos y las enfermedades se denominan científicamente como "estrés biótico". Si las plantas se cultivan bajo condiciones secas (sequía) o en suelos con un alto contenido de sales (alta salinidad), se dice que están expuestas a "estrés abiótico".
La salinidad del suelo es un problema agropecuario importante, pues al menos 20% de la tierra cultivable del planeta y más del 40% de las tierras irrigadas están afectadas por estrés salino. En consecuencia, la identificación de los genes de respuesta al estrés salino o genes de tolerancia a la sal son esenciales para los programas de cruzamientos. Este es un tema complejo, ya que la capacidad de las plantas de resistir el estrés abiótico no se debe a un sólo gen. La resistencia a la sequía y la salinidad es de naturaleza multigénica.
Nuestra colega de México y sus colaboradores dedicaron sus esfuerzos a investigar el trasfondo genético de A. hypochondriacus para el estrés abiótico. Debido a la naturaleza multigénica de este carácter, las investigaciones debieron basarse en un análisis de proteínas.
En esta figura, los resultados del análisis de proteínas muestran la diferencia en cantidad de proteína entre las plantas control y las plantas sometidas a estrés. Se analizaron 22 proteínas diferentes. En algunos casos, la regulación de las proteínas fue positiva debido al estrés hídrico por sequía (por ejemplo las proteínas número 6, 7 y 13), mientras que en otros fue negativa debido a estrés (por ejemplo las proteínas número 1 y 20).

General Description
The [BrandName] tablet and capsule counter consists of individual mechanical, pneumatic, electrical and electronic sub-systems that together form an integrated pharmaceutical counting and container filling system. The machine designation refers to a machine with 12 tracks, each one with its own sensor that can count product. The 12 tracks are divided into 2 filling sections each with 6 tracks. The machine will fill 2 containers simultaneously. All the major components and process steps of this equipment and their functions are described below:
Container Handling:
Containers are presented to the machine on a variable speed plastic slat conveyor. The machine has an adjustable container gating system that indexes and presents the containers to the two counting heads. After the last container has finished filling, the containers are released onto the outfeed conveyor. The conveyor is fitted with ‘No Bottle’ and ‘Queue Back’ sensors which interface with the control system to allow automatic operation of the machine subject to the level of containers on the conveyor.
Located on the outfeed conveyor is a reject mechanism (Optional) that will remove and confirm that containers which are identified as containing an over count are ejected from the system.
Counting Machine:
Tablets or capsules are placed into the hopper at the rear of the counting machine. This delivers the product onto the vibratory feed system. The feed system is divided into two sections each having six tracks. The product from the hopper is only allowed to transfer to a six track section when conditions further in the machine request more product. This restriction of tablets is generated by controlling the vibrators under the hopper. The vibratory trays accelerate, separate and feed the product into the count head.
This feed system is primarily used to ensure:
- Consistent product feed rate.
- Elimination of overlapped tablets.
- A controlled feed, i.e. the product does not "bounce" when it leaves the end of the trays and enters the count head. | Translation - Spanish

Manejo de envases:
Los envases se alimentan a la máquina por medio de una cinta transportadora plástica de velocidad variable. Luego de que el último envase se ha llenado, los envases se liberan en la cinta de salida. Existe un mecanismo de rechazo (Opcional) ubicado en la cinta de salida que quita los envases identificados como conteniendo una sobrecuenta y confirma que se remuevan del sistema.
Máquina contadora:
Las tabletas o las cápsulas se insertan en la tolva de la parte trasera de la máquina contadora. Esto lleva el producto al sistema vibratorio de alimentación. El sistema de alimentación se divide en dos secciones, cada una de seis pistas. El producto de la tolva se transfiere a una sección de las seis pistas sólo cuando las condiciones de la máquina requieren más producto. Esta restricción de tabletas se genera controlando los vibradores debajo de la tolva. Las bandejas vibratorias aceleran, separan y alimentan el producto al cabezal contador.
Este sistema de alimentación se utiliza principalmente para asegurar:
- Una tasa de alimentación de producto constante.
- La eliminación de tabletas superpuestas.

Los resultados del examen clínico externo y los derivados de la necropsia no arrojaron evidencias de alteraciones de la normalidad para las dos especies registradas: Oncorhynchus mykiss (trucha arcoiris) en el Río de la Carnicería, y Hatcheria macraei (bagre) en el Río de los Patos, aguas abajo del área del proyecto. De igual manera, en el análisis histopatológico no se corroboraron lesiones fuera de la normalidad para poblaciones naturales.
Sin embargo, en el análisis químico del tejido muscular dorsal se detectó una desviación del contenido de mercurio respecto a los niveles guía dispuestos por el Código Alimentario Argentino (CAA) y la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), que establecen niveles menores a 0,5 ppm en músculo de peces para consumo humano. En este estudio, 3 de 5 ejemplares de trucha arcoiris de la cuenca del Río de la Carnicería presentaron niveles de mercurio en músculo esquelético superiores a los niveles guía. Específicamente, los ejemplares de trucha con altos niveles de mercurio corresponden a los sitios: CAR4 en cuenca alta, afluente oeste (1,1 ppm), CAR1 en cuenca media (1,1 ppm) y CAR en cuenca baja (1,3 ppm). | Translation - English
The results derived from the external clinical exam and the necropsy did not show evidence of alterations in the normal conditions of either sampled species: Oncorhynchus mykiss (rainbow trout) in the Río de la Carnicería, and Hatcheria macraei (catfish) in the Río de los Patos, downstream from the project area. Furthermore, the histopathological assays did not show any out of the ordinary lesions for a natural population.
Nonetheless, the chemical analysis performed on the dorsal muscular tissue detected a deviation of mercury levels from the reference values specified in the Argentinean Food Code (CAA, in Spanish) and the World Health Organization (WHO),which established the acceptable level in fish muscle for human consumption to be below 0.5 ppm. In this study, 3 out of 5 rainbow trout specimens from the Río de la Carnicería basin showed higher mercury levels in the skeletal muscle than the reference values. The trout specimens with high mercury levels specifically correspond to the sites: CAR4 on the upper basin, western tributary (1.1 ppm), CAR1 on the middle basin (1.1 ppm) and CAR on the lower basin (1.3 ppm) . |
