Cognitive Linguistics

Cognitive linguistics has emerged in the last twenty-five years as a powerful approach to the study of language, conceptual systems, human cognition, and general meaning construction.
It addresses within language the structuring of basic conceptual categories such as space and time, scenes and events, entities and processes, motion and location, force and causation. It addresses the structuring of ideational and affective categories attributed to cognitive agents, such as attention and
perspective, volition and intention.(Talmy (2000), p. 3) In doing so, it develops a rich conception of grammar that reflects fundamental cognitive abilities: the ability to form structured conceptualizations with multiple levels of organization, to conceive of
a situation at varying levels of abstraction, to establish correspondences between facets of different structures, and to construe the same situation in alternate ways.(Langacker 1987, 1991)
Cognitive linguistics recognizes that the study of language is the study of language use and that when we engage in any language activity, we draw unconsciously on vast cognitive and cultural resources, call up models and frames, set up multiple connections, coordinate large arrays of information, and engage in creative mappings, transfers, and elaborations. Language does not "represent" meaning; it prompts for the construction of meaning in particular contexts with particular cultural models and cognitive resources. Very sparse grammar guides us along the same rich mental paths, by prompting us to perform complex cognitive operations. Thus, a large part of cognitive linguistics centers on the creative on-line construction of meaning as discourse unfolds in context.(Fauconnier and Sweetser, 1996, Sweetser, 1999) The dividing line between semantics and pragmatics dissolves and truth-conditional compositionality disappears.
Aspects of language and expression that had been consigned to the rhetorical periphery of language, such as metaphor(Lakoff and Johnson, 1980, 1999; Sweetser, 1990) and metonymy, (Radden, Panther, Thornburg, Barcelona) are redeemed and rehabilitated within cognitive linguistics. They are understood to be powerful conceptual mappings at the very core of human thought, important not just for the understanding of poetry, but also science, mathematics, religion,
philosophy, and everyday speaking and thinking.(Lakoff and Johnson, 1980, 1999; Lakoff and Núñéz, 2001)
Importantly, thought and language are embodied. Conceptual structure arises from our sensorimotor experience and the neural structures that give rise to it. The structure of concepts includes prototypes; reason is embodied and imaginative. A grammar is ultimately a neural system. The properties of
grammars are the properties of humanly embodied neural systems. (Lakoff and Johnson, 1999) Cognitive capacities that play a fundamental role in the organization of language are not specific to language. Such capacities include analogy, recursion, viewpoint and perspective, figure-ground organization, and conceptual integration. (Fauconnier and Turner, 1998, in press)
The stage was set for cognitive linguistics in the nineteen seventies and early eighties with Len Talmy's work on figure and ground, Ronald Langacker's cognitive grammar framework, George Lakoff's research on metaphor, gestalts, categories and prototypes,(Lakoff, 1987) Fillmore's frame semantics,(Fillmore, 1982) and Fauconnier's mental
spaces.(Fauconnier, 1985, 1994) Today, there are hundreds of scholars who work in this paradigm, and there is a huge amount of published research on the theories and their
applications. The present short encyclopedia entry cannot do justice to the wealth of discoveries, empirical studies, and applications that have come out of this recent tradition. I give in the bibliography some indications of where to get a more detailed picture. पिछले २५ वर्षों में बोधात्मक भाषाविज्ञान का उद्भव भाषा, संकल्पनात्मक प्रणाली, मानव बोध और समान्य अर्थ संरचना के अध्ययन में एक शक्तिशाली दृष्टिकोण के रूप में हुआ है।
भाषा के अंतर्गत यह मूल संकल्पनात्मक वर्गों यथा काल व स्थान, दृश्य व घटना, वस्तुएं एवं प्रक्रियाएं, गति एवं स्थिती, बल एवं प्रोत्साहक आदि को संबोधित करता है। यह ध्यान एवं दृष्टिकोण, स्वत्व एवं इच्छा जैसे विचारत्मक एवं प्रभावात्मक वर्गों से संबंधित बोधकारी तत्वों को संबोधित करता है। (टाल्मी, २०००, पृ.३) ऐसा करने के लिए यह व्याकरण की एक संवृद्ध परिकल्पना क विकास करता है जो कि मूलभूत बोधात्मक योग्यताओं को परिलक्षित करती है। ये योग्यताएं निम्न हो सकती हैं: (लैंगेकर, १९८७, १९९१)
संरचित संकल्पनाओं के बहुस्तरीय संगठन का निर्माण करने की योग्यता,

बोधात्मक भाषाविज्ञान मानता है कि भाषा का अध्ययन भाषा के प्रयोग का अध्ययन है और यह कि जब कभी हम किसी भाषिक कार्यकलाप में संलग्न होते हैं हम अनजाने में विशाल बोधात्मक एवं सांस्कृतिक संसाधनों का प्रयोग करते हैं, रूपों एवं प्रारूपों से आमुख होते हैं, एक साथ कई संपर्क स्थापित करते हैं, सूचनाओं की विशाल श्रेणी का समन्वय करते हैं और सृजनात्मक प्रतिचित्रण, विस्थापन एवं विस्तारण में संलग्न होते हैं। भाषा अर्थ का "प्रतिनिधित्व" नहीं करती है; यह किसी खास सांस्कृतिक प्रारूप एवं बोधात्मक संसाधनों वाली किसी खास संदर्भ में अर्थ की संरचना के लिए प्रेरित करती है। बहुत ही कम ऐसे व्याकरण हैं जो कि क्लिष्ट बोधात्मक कार्यों को करने के लिए प्रेरित करते हुए हमें इस तरह की संवृद्ध मानसिक धाराओं के साथ मार्गदर्शन करती हैं। इस प्रकार, बोधात्मक भाषाविज्ञान का एक बड़ा अंश अर्थ की सृजनात्मक ऑन-लाईन संरचना पर केन्द्रित हैं क्योंकि संवाद संदर्भ में प्रकट होती है। (फ़ॉकनर व स्वीट्स्टर, १९९६; स्वीट्स्टर, १९९१) अर्थविज्ञान एवं व्यावहारिक अर्थविज्ञान के बीच की विभाजन रेखा विलीन हो जाती है और सत्य-आश्रित सृजनात्मकता गायब हो जाती है।
भाषा एवं उक्ति के वे पहलू जो भाषा के अलंकार-शास्त्र की परिधि में मान लिए गए थे, जैसे रुपक (लाकौफ़ व जान्सन, १९८०, १९९१; स्वीट्स्टर १९९०) एवं गुणोक्ति अलंकार, (राड्डेन, पेन्थर, थोर्नबर्ग, बार्सीलोना) उन्हें बोधात्मक भाषाविज्ञान में पुनर्स्थापित किया गया है। इन्हें सशक्त परिकल्पनात्मक प्रतिचित्रण माना जाता है जो कि मानवीय सोच के केन्द्र में हैं और न केवल कविताएं हीं बल्कि विज्ञान, गणित, धर्म, दर्शन शास्त्र एवं दैनंदिनी सोच एवं संवाद को समझने के लिए महत्वपूर्ण हैं । (लाकौफ़ व जान्सन, १९८०, १९९१; लाकौफ़ व नूनेज़, २००१)
महत्वपूर्ण बात यह है कि सोच एवं भाषा संशरीर हैं। परिकल्पनात्मक संरचना का उत्थान हमारी ज्ञानेन्द्रिय अनुभव एवं स्नायविक संरचनाओं से होती हैं। संकल्पनाओं की संरचना में आदर्श सम्मिलित हैं; कारण समाहित एवं सृजनात्मक है। एक व्याकरण अंतत: एक स्नायविक तंत्र होता है। व्याकरणों की प्रकृति मानवीय स्नायविक तंत्रों की प्रकृति होती है।(लाकौफ़ व जान्सन, १९९९) भाषा के संगठन में मौलिक भूमिका निभानेवाली बोधात्मक क्षमता किसी भाषा विशेष से संबद्ध नहीं होती। इन क्षमताओं में समरूपता, पुनरावृत्ती, दृष्टिकोण एवं परिप्रेक्ष्य, रूपाधार (figure-ground) संगठन एवं परिकल्पनात्मक एकीकरण शामिल है।(फ़ॉकनर व टर्नर, १९९८, प्रेस में)
पिछली सदी के सातवीं और आठवीं दशक में लेन टाल्मी के अलंकार और आधार, रोनाल्ड लैंगेकर के बोधात्मक व्याकरण की रूपरेखा, जार्ज लाकौफ़ का रूपक अलंकार, ’गेस्टाल्ट’, वर्गों, एवं आदर्शों (लाकौफ़, १९८७) पर किए गए अनुसंधान, फ़िलमोर का रूप अर्थविज्ञान (फ़िलमोर, १९८२) और फ़ॉकनर का मानसिक अन्तर (फ़ॉकनर, १९८५, १९९४) पर किए गए कार्यों के साथ ही बोधात्मक भाषाविज्ञान का नींव रख दी गई थी। आज इस प्रतिमान में कार्य करने वाले विद्वानों की संख्या सैकड़ों में है और इस दिशा में कई सिद्धांतों एवं उनके प्रयोगों पर विशाल मात्रा में प्रकाशित साहित्य उपलब्ध हैं। प्रस्तुत लघु विश्वकोशीय लेख इस नई परंपरा में जन्मी खोज संपत्ती, आगमनात्मक अध्ययन एवं इनके प्रयोगों को समुचित ढ़ंग से प्रस्तुत नहीं कर सकती। विवरणात्मक चित्र प्राप्त करने के लिए मैंने ग्रन्थ सूची में कुछ संकेत दिए हैं। (जानसेन व रेडेकर, २०००; तोमासेलो, १९९८; च्यूकेन्स व जिरार्ट्स, आगामी) इस लेख के अगले भागों में मैने बोधात्मक भाषाविज्ञान के कुछ मूलभूत बातों का खाका खींचा है।
