All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.
The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?
No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists
but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. With my camera I appropriate everything beautiful, possess it, shrink it, domesticate it, and reproduce it on my blank sitting-room wall to prove to a selected audience of friends and family the one absolutely vital fact about these beauties: I saw them, I was there, I photographed them, and, ergo, they are.

Orice călătorie este în vremurile noastre doar prilejul de ne a plimba aparatul de fotografiat din loc în loc, toţi călătorii sînt conduşi de lentila atotputernică. Poate că nimic din toate acestea nu ar avea vreo importanţă, dacă ar ieşi ceva de valoare. Dacă toată agitaţia şi păcăniturile ar produce, la urma urmei, ceva ce nu ar fi existat deja, imagini cu frumuseţi imortalizate sau vreun adevăr scos la iveală. Dar, din nefericire, nu-i aşa. Aparatul este pur şi simplu grafitti înnobilat.
Aparatul de fotografiat este mijlocul prin care ne punem amprenta pe tot ce vedem, cu scuza că înregistrăm Minunile Lumii deja înregistrate în chip minunat de profesionişti şi scoase de vînzare la fiecare librarie de la colţ de stradă sau la chioşcul de ziare. Dar ce folos să îi arătăm acasă mătuşii Maud, vederi cu peisajul toscan, dacă noi nu sîntem în poză drept mărturie că am fost acolo?
Nici o înşiruire de pietre nu este veridică dacă nu sînt şi eu în ea. Orice monument există doar ca nevastă-mea să de sprijine de el. Nici un templu nu devine interesant fără moaca mea alături, rînjind. Cu aparatul îmi însuşesc tot ce e frumos, îl fac al meu, în micşorez, îl îmblînzesc şi îl reproduc pe peretele alb din sufragerie ca să dovedesc unui public ales de prieteni şi rude unicul adevăr absolut vital al acestor frumuseţi : le-am văzut, am fost acolo, le-am pozat, şi, deci, există.

I miei primi ricordi delle Feste mi riportano ad abitudini molto diverse da quelle di oggi.
…Dunque le Feste. Attese. Vagheggiate. Gioiose.
Cominciavano con le letterine, indirizzate ai genitori, cara mamma e caro papà, sempre le stesse con scarsa fantasia. Piene di buoni propositi: sarò buono, sarò obbediente, vi voglio bene, eccetera. Ne conservo ancora qualcuna insieme alle pagelle della prima e della seconda elementare.
L'apertura ufficiale arrivava la sera del 24 dicembre. Il cenone della vigilia. E il presepe. Anzi presepio. Ci avevano lavorato a lungo, bambini e genitori. Avevano raccolto la vellutina in campagna e nei giardini delle città. I personaggi del presepio venivano conservati da un anno all'altro e così le casette dei contadini, le pecore dei pastori, i tre Re magi, la Madonna col suo manto azzurro e San Giuseppe che non so perché risultava calvo, forse per dargli un sembiante da persona anziana e senza le tentazioni della carne. E il bambino. Il bambino Gesù, un corpicino nudo o appena velato per nascondere il sesso.
…Finita la cena, i bambini recitavano una poesiola o leggevano la letterina. Poi andavano a dormire e venivano svegliati pochi minuti prima della mezzanotte. Si formava un piccolo corteo col bimbo più piccolo in testa che portava il bambino Gesù e lo deponeva nella culla vigilata dalla mucca e dall'asino. La cerimonia finiva lì e si tornava a dormire, ma non era facile riprender sonno anche perché si sapeva che al risveglio avremmo trovato i regali.
I regali del Natale erano tuttavia leggeri. Una bambolina per le femmine, ai maschi un gioco dell'oca o il meccano che allora era in voga, abituava a una manualità molto incoraggiata dai maestri della scuola.
I grandi, genitori e altri parenti e amici, non si scambiavano regali tra loro, non era uso. L'albero di Natale ci era del tutto sconosciuto e lo stesso Babbo Natale - almeno nelle regioni del Centro e del Sud - non esisteva. Qualche vaga eco ce ne arrivava da conoscenti che abitavano a Milano e Torino. Da Roma in giù di papà Natale non si aveva notizia. | Translation - Romanian
Cele dintâi amintiri pe care le păstrez despre sărbători mă poartă cu gândul la obiceiuri foarte diferite de cele din zilele noastre.
... Aşadar sărbătorile. Aşteptate. Dorite cu ardoare. Pline de bucurie.
Începeam cu scrisorele adresate părinţilor, dragă mamă şi dragă tată, mereu la fel, lipsite de imaginaţie. Pline de intenţii bune: o să fiu bun, o să fiu ascultător, vă iubesc, etc. Mai păstrez vreuna rătăcită împreună cu carnetele de note din clasa întâi şi a doua.
Deschiderea oficială venea în seara de 24 decembrie. Cina din ajun. Şi ieslea. Ieslea de Crăciun. Lucraseră mult la ea, părinţi şi copii deopotrivă. Adunaseră arăriel de pe la ţară şi de prin grădinile oraşului. Personajele ieslei erau puse la păstrare de la un an la altul, căsuţele ţăranilor, oile păstorilor, cei trei magi, Maica Sfântă cu pelerina ei albastră şi Sfântul Iosif, care nu ştiu de ce, dar era chel, poate pentru a-i da un aspect de om bătrân, fără tentaţii trupeşti. Şi pruncul. Pruncul Isus, un trupuşor gol şi abia acoperit ca să-i ascundă sexul.
După ce se termina cina copiii recitau o poezioară sau citeau scrisorica. Apoi mergeum la culcare şi erau treziţi cu puţine minute înainte de miezul nopţii. Se forma un mică suită cu mezinul în frunte, care îl ducea pe pruncul Isus şi îl punea leagănul păzit de văcuţă şi de măgăruş. Ceremonia se termina aici şi mergeam înapoi la culcare, dar nu era uşor să ne-apuce iar somnul, mai ales pentru că ştiam că la trezire ne aşteptau cadourile.
Cadourile de Crăciun erau mereu subţirele. Pentru fetiţe, o păpuşă, pentru băieţi, un joc de zaruri sau jucăria mecanică în vogă atunci, care să le antreneze dexteritatea, foarte încurajată de învăţători.
Oamenii mari, părinţii, alte rude şi prieteni nu îşi dădeau cadouri, nu se obişnuia aşa. Bradul de Crăciun era cu totul necunoscut, la fel şi Moş Crăciun – cel puţin în regiunile de Centru şi Sud – nu exista. Nişte vorbe destul de vagi ne ajunseseră la urechi de la nişte cunoscuţi care locuiau la Milano şi Torino. Dar de la Roma în jos nu era cunoscut.

Rates
Standard rates are 0.09 EUR per word / 40 EUR per hour. However, they may go higher or lower depending on the project. To ask for a quote send an e-mail and you will receive the answer within one or two hours, or within the next 12 hours if sent outside 8 AM to 8 PM (GMT+2hr).
Additional fees: 50% for rush jobs and 20% for translation from hard copy documents. Discounts can be negociated for long-term or large projects. Payments in RON, EUR and USD.
Minimum charge: 20 €
