More Less | Sample translations submitted: 1| French to English: Combattre le paudisme | Source text - French Le paludisme en quelques mots.
| Translation - English A brief account of malaria
This disease is extremely widespread. 40% of the world population, mainly found in tropical areas around the globe; in Sub-Saharan Africa, South East Asia and South America, are effectively at risk from contracting the virus.
Malaria is caused by one of four different species of the Plasmodium parasite; Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium vivax. This micro-organism, which is transmitted to man through the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito, colonizes the liver and goes on to live parasitically in the red blood cells.
There are two forms of malaria; one known as ‘simple’, and the other as ‘pernicious’. The ‘simple’ form of the illness is identified by symptoms such as fever, sweating, shivering and digestive disorders. If an attack of simple malaria is left untreated it will develop into pernicious malaria. This serious form of the disease manifests itself in several ways and affects the liver and lungs, causes haemorrhaging, disorders of consciousness, and even coma which can consequently lead to death.
The disease is easy to diagnose - a single drop of blood being sufficient for a laboratory diagnosis. An even simpler test known as ‘Paracheck’ has been available for some years and can, within a few minutes, confirm the presence of an infection without the need for referral to a laboratory.
Prevention and treatment
The disease must be treated as early as possible in order to prevent it reaching its most serious form, and there are several types of medication available which can be used both for treatment and prevention. Quinine, an ancient molecule known for its anti-malarial properties dating back to the 17th century, is still used today for treating serious forms of the disease. Over the past few years, however, the parasite has developed some resistance against certain medications.
Nevertheless, still the most effective means of fighting the spread of the disease is to prevent infection by eradicating the mosquito carrier (the Anopheles), and to prevent its bite through the use of mosquito nets.
