What kind of drug will be investigated in this study and what is the purpose of this study?
In the 1184.14 study, a combination of the two different types of inhaled long-acting bronchodilators tiotropium (Spiriva®) and salmeterol will be administered from a newly developed capsule, to assess the efficacy and safety of this combination. For this, you will be asked to inhale study medication in the morning and in the evening.
The efficacy and safety of the following treatments will be compared:
Treatment 1: tiotropium and salmeterol in the morning; placebo* in the evening
Treatment 2: tiotropium in the morning; placebo* in the evening
Treatment 3: tiotropium and salmeterol in the morning; Salmeterol in the evening
Treatment 4: salmeterol in the morning; salmeterol in the evening
Treatment 5: placebo* in the morning; placebo* in the evening
*placebo is a non-active substance
This is a randomized study. It will be decided at random which patients will receive which treatment. For each treatment group there is a 20% chance that you will be allocated to this specific group.
Furthermore, the study is double-blind. Neither you nor your physician will know which treatment you will receive, but in case of an emergency, your physician will be able to have this information at his (or her) disposal.
After 3 months of treatment, all patients in treatment group 5 (placebo) will be randomized into treatment 1 - 4.
