During the 20th century, California became known for funnin' and sunnin', fancy cars, movie stars, face-lifts, trend-setting fashions, and wacky cult and cultural movements. In the process, 'California' and 'airhead' became synonymous. 'You lose 10 points off your IQ every year you stay there', went a line in one of Woody Allen's early movies.
But beneath its frivolous exterior, Califonia has for the last 150 years been about serious business - mining, agriculture, railroad building, moviemaking, oil refining, defence contracting and technological innovation. With all its residents have accomplished - the state's economy, the world's seventh largest, generates 13 per cent of America's national product - it's a wonder there's time to hit those myriad beaches at all.
'The Californians are an idle, thriftless people, and can make nothing for themselves,' griped Richard Henry Dana in Two Years before the Mast, published in 1840. Had Dana arrived a century earlier, before the Spanish began colonising in earnest, he might have marvelled at the self-sufficiency of the Native American population. And had he dropped by a decade or so after he did, when the Gold Rush was in full swing, he mihgt have seen how an international influx of talent had inspired no end of entrepreneurial spirit. A 20. században Kaliforniát a könnyed szórakozás, szikrázó napsütés, menő autók, filmcsillagok, plasztikai műtétek, divatos cuccok és buggyant trendek, kulturális megmozdulások államaként emlegették. Ezért szép lassan Kalifornia az üresfejűség szinonimájává vált. 10 pontot veszítesz IQ-dból minden itt eltöltött évvel hallható Woody Allen egyik korai filmjében.
De ez csak a felszín. Az elmúlt 150 évben Kaliforniában keményen dolgoztak is bányászat, mezőgazdaság, vasútépítés, filmgyártás, olajfinomítás, híres perek, technikai újítások jellemzik történelmét. Ennek ismeretében joggal csodálkozhatunk, vajon ennyi munka mellett az állam gazdasága a világon a 7. legnagyobb, Amerika nemzeti össztermékének 13%-át adja miként van idejük a helyieknek a tucatnyi strand bármelyikét is felkeresni.
A kaliforniaiak haszontalan, tékozló emberek, semmit nem tesznek boldogulásukért elégedetlenkedett Richard Henry Dana az 1840-ben megjelent Two Years Before the Mastben. Ha Dana egy évszázaddal korábban, a spanyol gyarmatosítás idején érkezik, bizony alaposan elcsodálkozott volna a bennszülöttek magas fokú önellátásán.
