THE POWER OF THE UNCONSCIOUS MIND
Getting a handle on your fear of rejection and your sensitivity to criticism is an inside job. The problem begins in your mind, and the solution resides there, too. The power of your conscious and unconscious mind is awesome. That's both good and bad news. You can drive yourself crazy with your worries and inhibitions, but you also can set yourself free. Because rejection and criticism always accompany you on your entrepreneurial journey, the best you can hope to do is minimize their occurrence and their ability to cause you distress. The most successful among us aren't those who have escaped rejection but those who have harnessed their minds to focus energy in a positive direction, rater than being trapped in depression, defensiveness, and fear.
The most stunning illustration of the power of the mind over behavior I have ever seen occurred in May of 1998 when I watched a CBS television special called “Hypnotized.” The show featured a world-class hypnotist who showcased his incredible talents by hypnotizing volunteers in everyday settings with their peers present, then, through the hypnotist’s power of suggestion, leading the subjects to undertake an assortment of wild, crazy, and humorous activities. Throughout this program, I saw lessons for the rejection-terrified.
