The Beatles new album - Love
It begins with a twittering of birdsong lifted from "Across the Universe." And once the triple-tracked a capella harmonies of "Because" enter, followed by snatches from "A Hard Day's Night" and "The End," leading into a fired-up "Get Back," it becomes obvious that this is far more than just another Beatles compilation.
This is Love, conceived by the Fabs' former producer George Martin and son Giles as a stageshow soundtrack to Cirque de Soleil's Las Vegas spectacular of the same name, but appears to have taken on a life of its own. Whereas the Beatles' last release, 1, delivered the (over?) familiar hits in a nice, simple package, Love is a mélange of the familiar and obscure, all literally mixed together in one 78-minute audio collage which succeeds in reminding the listener just why the Beatles truly are, as Lennon put it, "toppermost of the poppermost."
There's no new Beatles material per se, but the songs are all approached differently--some are cut together in a flawlessly mixed medley (check out "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!/I Want You/Helter Skelter"), some reassemble different backing tracks and vocal performances to create new spins on old classics; but all the songs are revitalized considerably. Even in its weakest moments (which probably work better in the context of the show itself), Love is still a formidable prospect, and one has to admire Martin's willingness to go out on a limb with such a project.
While purists may complain that the cut 'n' paste nature of the project is simply tampering with perfection, at the very least it'll make them reach for the originals and enjoy them all over again. For newcomers and everyone else, it makes a fine listen, both in its sonic clarity (the actual tracks are the best they've sounded on CD) and audacious nature.

Inicia con el trino de pajaros extraído de “A través del universo” (“Across the universe”). Y una vez que entran las triples armonías vocales acapella de “Pórque” (“Because”), seguidas de fragmentos de “La noche de un día difícil” (“A hard day’s night”) y “El fin” (“The End”), conduciéndo hacia un prendidísimo “Regresa” (“Get back”), es obvio que este disco es mucho más que una simple recopilación de Los Beatles.
Se trata de “Love” (“Amor”), concebido por el productor original del grupo George Martin y su hijo Giles, como la banda sonora del espectacular musical del mismo nombre, que presenta en las Vegas el Cirque de Soleil, y que dá la impresión de que ha tomado vida de manera independiente al show. Mientras que el último lanzamiento de The Beatles, titulado simplemente “1”, nos entregó los (¿muy?) conocidos éxitos en una presentación sencilla y agradable, “Love” es una mezcolanza de lo más conocido con lo más oscuro de su material, todo literalmente mezclado en un “collage” de sonido de 78 minutos, el cual consigue recordarle al escucha el porqué Los Beatles son realmente, como Lennon decía, lo más grande del mundo del pop (“the toppermost of the popermost”).
En sí, no hay ningún nuevo material Beatle en este disco, pero las canciones se abordan de manera diferente, --algunas se presentan editadas juntas en un popurrí impecablemente mezclado (escuchen “A beneficio del Sr. Kite/Te quiero/Helter Skelter” (“Being for the benefit of Mr. Kite/I want you/Helter Skelter”)); en otras se reacomodan diferentes pistas instrumentales y vocales para crear nuevas versiones de viejos clásicos; pero todas las canciones están revitalizadas considerablemente. Incluso en sus momentos más débiles, (los cuales probablemente funcionan mejor en el contexto del espectáculo mismo), “Love” es aún así un formidable prospecto de éxito, y uno no tiene otra más que admirar la disposición de George Martin para arriesgarse con un proyecto como éste.

Pan’s Labyrinth (Guillermo del Toro, 2006)
Inspired by the Brothers Grimm, Jorge Luis Borges, and Guillermo del Toro's own unlimited imagination, Pan's Labyrinth is a fairytale for adults. Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) may only be 12, but the worlds she inhabits, both above and below ground, are dark as anything del Toro has conjured.
Set in rural Spain, circa 1944, Ofelia and her widowed mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil, Belle Epoque), have just moved into an abandoned mill with Carmen's new husband, Captain Vidal (Sergi López, With a Friend like Harry). Carmen is pregnant with his son. Other than her sickly mother and kindly housekeeper Mercedes (Maribel Verdú, Y Tu Mamá También), the dreamy Ofelia is on her own. Vidal, an exceedingly cruel man, couldn't be bothered. He has informers to torture.
Ofelia soon finds that an entire universe exists below the mill. Her guide is the persuasive Faun (Doug Jones, Mimic). As her mother grows weaker, Ofelia spends more and more time in the satyr's labyrinth. He offers to help her out of her predicament if she'll complete three treacherous tasks. Ofelia is willing to try, but does this alternate reality really exist or is it all in her head?
Del Toro leaves that up to the viewer to decide in a beautiful, yet brutal twin to The Devil's Backbone, which was also haunted by the ghost of Franco. Though it lacks the humor of Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth represents Guillermo Del Toro at the top of his considerable game. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
