About me
Neurons, Neutrons, Noetics

• Extensive translation and editing experience in neuroscience and nuclear technologies
• Committed to the translation of fiction and poetry, as recognized by a Fall 2013 French Voices Award

As Nobel laureate Eric Kandel wrote, "Because of its broad implications for individual and social well-being, there is now a consensus in the scientific community that the biology of mind will be to the twenty-first century what the biology of the gene was to the twentieth century." (In Search of Memory, 2006)

My desire to write accurately and aptly has always been closely tied to my interest in science. In addition to a BA in French, I did undergraduate research in a developmental neurobiology lab and spent my year abroad in France studying genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and physiology at Université Montpellier II.

As a laboratory apprentice, I spent a summer trying to clone and express a Trk cell-surface receptor implicated in neural crest cell differentiation. As a translator, I actively seek out projects in the fields of neuroscience and neurology:

• Scientific papers on mirror neurons, yawning, stroke, computer-assisted neurosurgery, and dysphasia
• Leukodystrophy research summaries for a grant application
• 18th-century case history of a rare sleep disorder
• Press releases on medical and neuroimaging research

Nuclear technologies and engineering
Translating French technical documentation into English has naturally led me to focus on nuclear energy. Over 75% of domestic electricity in France is provided by nuclear power plants. French technologies at all stages of the fuel cycle constitute a major export. Working with specialized agencies, I have translated a number of documents for key nuclear players in France, including CEA, IRSN, ANDRA, and EDF. Over the past 5 years, I have also worked directly for Areva, a nuclear prime contractor with projects around the world. In addition to translating requests for proposals, contracts, requisitions, specifications, and standards, I have gained experience in the engineering disciplines that interface with the nuclear technologies. Working in Areva offices to handle their confidential documents, I was able to consult mechanical, electrical, I&C, and civil engineers for clarification and terminology.

In his writings on mystical experience, William James noted that one of its defining characteristics is the noetic quality (by which an otherwise hidden or inaccessible knowledge is revealed.) He refers to "states of insight into depths of truth unplumbed by the discursive intellect. They are illuminations, full of significance and importance […]" (The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature, 1902). Reading may open the way to such experience, insofar as certain texts transcend the words they consist of. This kind of text is nearly impossible for the translator and yet immensely rewarding. Firmly committed to pursuing this kind of work, I have translated the writings of poets Jean de Breyne, Christian Veschambre and Jean-Louis Giovannoni. In 2013/14, I took time from my gainful activities to complete an internship with Dalkey Archive Press, a US publisher specialized in the translation of contemporary literature. Finally, I was awarded a French Voices grant (Fall 2013) to translate the novel Un mage en été by Olivier Cadiot.
